Founded in 2009 in San Diego, California, Victory Sober Living provides faith-based sober living for men in recovery from chemical dependency. Their main emphasis for recovery focuses around Dan Sherman’s Big Book Awakening Book, which is used in conjunction with the Big Book, and helps recovering alcoholics and addicts gain a more intense connection to the 12 steps, as well as learn tools to become feasible sponsors.

Accommodations and Amenities

Victory Sober Living accommodates eight men, who are paired in fully furnished rooms, which include full-sized beds, nightstands, dressers and assigned closet space. Some singles are available. Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. The house has two refrigerators for extra food storage. Amenities include Wi-Fi, pool table, Xbox, treadmill, air conditioning, satellite TV and a laundry room.

The house includes a patio with a sitting area. A residential manager lives on the premises. Transportation is provided to 12-step meetings, and other rides are scheduled on a case-by-case basis.

Rules and Regulations

While it is preferred that clients have a minimum of 30 days and have undergone residential treatment, others are admitted on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, all potential clients must have completed detox and have a strong willingness to work on their recovery, along with staying clean and sober.

Requirements include performance of weekly household chores, which are assigned on Wednesdays and Sundays. Additionally, residents must clean the kitchen once per week. Other rules include getting a sponsor, working the steps, attending a bi-weekly 10 am Sunday meeting, as well as attending three outside 12-step meetings, and one in-house meeting, either at 7:30 pm Wednesday evenings or Thursday nights at 7 pm in Del Mar. Residents must have attendance slips signed by the meeting’s secretary. Clients must also attend an 8 am Sunday service at the Rock Church in San Diego.

At Victory Sober Living, there is the belief that exercise is advantageous to those in early recovery, by boosting self-esteem and providing health benefits. There are two fitness centers located in close proximity to the house.

Founded in 2014 in Tulsa, Oklahoma by Pastor Buddy Davis and his wife Alicia Davis Abba Compassionate Ministries is a Christian-based organization that provides transitional living, a supermarket shuttle and Celebrate Recovery meetings. Their mission is to encourage clients to accept Christ as their Higher Power. Abba Compassionate Ministries is a ministry of the Church of Nazarene, and operated by its Northeast Oklahoma District Church.

Accommodations and Amenities

Presently, Abba Compassionate Ministries has two men’s homes and is in the process of opening the Arabella House for women. The Hardcastle House accommodates seven men, while the Stephen’s House holds four men. Accommodations vary, but typically men are paired in double-occupancy furnished rooms.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation is conducted in fully equipped kitchens. Some clients qualify for food stamps, which helps towards the purchase of groceries. Since the house is located six miles away from the nearest grocery store, a free shuttle is available to transport clients to and from the supermarket. The houses have laundry rooms, and onsite residential managers.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must fill out an application, and then undergo a comprehensive face-to-face interview. They will be asked about their relationship with Christ and their own future goals. Criminal justice clients are also asked specific questions pertaining to their legal issues. Requirements include obtaining gainful employment, being financially accountable, attending house meetings, Bible and step studies, and participating in Celebrate Recovery.

Davis conducts an on-site Celebrate Recovery program, which includes a low cost 6 pm dinner, followed by a Saturday evening meeting from 7 pm to 8 pm, followed by small topic groups between 8 pm and 9 pm. Groups are gender-specific and topics include substance abuse, and “hurts, habits and hang-ups.” Additionally, there is a newcomers group. After the meeting, clients attend a local coffee shop for further fellowship. This includes free coffee and desserts.

At Abba Compassionate Ministries, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, and relapsed residents must leave the premises immediately to ensure the safety of other residents.

Extras

Other services available on-site include Life Launch, which provides life skills, and referrals for other community resources for clients, so that they can smoothly transition back into the community.

Abba Compassionate Ministries provides a prison ministry, which includes bringing Celebrate Recovery and Bible studies to incarcerated clients, as well as providing clothing and food. Additionally, some of these clients are accepted into the transitional housing program, upon release.

The Arabella House is accepting donations, and has created a gift registry on Target.

Located in San Diego, California, Bay House provides sober living for women. Their mission is to provide safe and structured housing, while clients rebuild their lives, and build a strong foundation in recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Bay House has a seven-bed capacity, and is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood. The ranch-style house is centered between the Interstate 5 and 805 freeways in close proximity to San Diego Mesa College, shopping areas and Mission Bay Park. Residents are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds, country style nightstands and dressers.

The women are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include paper supplies, laundry room, Wi-Fi, satellite cable TV, air conditioning, a landline phone, parking and laundry detergent. The house includes friendly canines, and a residential manager lives on the premises. Smoking is permitted in the backyard only, and an ashtray is designated for cigarette butts.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must completed detox and pass an alcohol and drug-screening test. Additionally, drug testing is conducted daily. Requirements to stay in the house include performing daily chores, adhering to a 12-step program of recovery and acquiring, plus working the steps with a sponsor. Clients must be out of bed by 8 am Mondays through Fridays. Rooms must be kept tidy, beds must be made, and chores must be done by 10 am. While not mandatory, some of the women attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Forbidden behaviors include sexual relationships between residents, theft of any kind, violence, threats and abusive conduct. Residents who relapse must leave the house for a minimum of 72 hours, and are admitted back on a case-by-case basis. A second relapse warrants an immediate eviction from the premises. All the women must sign in and sign out when they are entering or leaving the premises.

While residents are allowed to have visitors between 9 am and 1 pm Saturdays, and 11 am and 3 pm Sundays, the house manager must be on the premises. Additionally, visitors must sign a liability waiver, and are subject to drug testing. Men must use the downstairs bathroom. Sponsors are allowed to visit the house seven days a week between the hours of 9 am to 9 pm.

Bay House is an affiliate of the San Diego Sober Living Coalition, which demands high standards from members.

Ember Lodge is a brand new sober living home dedicated to young adult women in Asheville, North Carolina. Founded in 2016 in by Rebekah Puccia, who has been clean and sober for six years, Ember Lodge provides a serene, safe and structured home for a small group of women.

The name of the house was inspired by an experience that Puccia had during her stay in a residential wilderness treatment program. While trying to light a primitive fire, she experienced many negative emotions and wanted to give up but she kept trying. When she finally saw a tiny spark on the tinder bundle and a small ember appeared, the women in her program surrounded her, providing silent support. In that moment, Puccia connected strongly to the women and became committed to her recovery. Her belief is that a lot of gender-specific recovery programming is designed on a male model, which she does not deem effective for all women. Ember Lodge offers women a holistic approach, which employs a strong 12-step component.

Accommodations and Amenities

Ember Lodge accommodates eight women inside a brand new three-story house that has a view of the Blue Ridge mountain skyline. The home includes bamboo floors, a library, two raised decks and a large living room with a gas fireplace. The house includes large windows which allow for soft ambient lighting. Women are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds, closets, and dressers. Each bed has a unique quilt, hand made by Puccia’s mother.

While residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation, a nutritionist provides healthy meal planning, and assists clients in writing up a grocery list. Food is prepared in a brand new fully equipped kitchen. On Sundays, the women participate in a family-style dinner, which allows clients an opportunity to build fellowship.

Amenities include Wi-Fi, off-street parking, towels, sheets, bedspreads and pillows, laundry facilities, Cable TV, foosball, yoga and gym memberships, a dartboard, and fresh herb gardens. Staff lives on the premises, and oversees operations. Jäger, a friendly German shorthaired pointer provides canine companionship.

Rules and Regulations

At Ember Lodge, new clients must have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety and preferably have attended residential treatment. Puccia believes in addressing clients one on one, and provides individualized recovery protocols. During the first three days, women with co-occurring disorders receive a psychiatric evaluation, and medication management to ensure that they are receiving the appropriate psych meds. This service is included in the cost. Suboxone, benzodiazepines and other narcotics often used in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are not allowed.

As a 12-step oriented sober living home, clients must initially attend five weekly AA/NA meetings. Ninety meetings in 90 days are recommended for unemployed clients. Other basic requirements include working or volunteering, being at weekly house reflection meetings, as well as guided meditation gatherings led by an experienced mentor. Ember Lodge works closely with a local  Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) program, where some of the women receive outpatient counseling.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Ember Lodge, residents who relapse are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Since clients progress through different phases while living in the house, the curfew times range. Initially, the curfew is 9 pm, followed by a 10 pm curfew. Clients attending 8 pm 12-step meetings are granted leeway, provided they inform staff in advance. Weekend curfews are flexible.

Extras

Other services besides housing include individual goal-setting, career and life path guidance, acupuncture, and a weekly relapse prevention study with a certified substance abuse counselor. Group therapy is also provided off the premises. Optional add on services (for an additional cost) include massage and energy therapy. Clients participate in group outings that include bowling and going to the movies.

Vantage Health System Addiction Program is one of the many programs offered by Vantage Health Systems, a non-profit organization founded in 1957 to provide health and wellness services to the Bergen County community. VHS offers services from two locations in New Jersey—one in Dumont and the other in Englewood. The addictions program offered by VHS is outpatient with credentialed staff using evidence-based methods of treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The basic outpatient track at VHS is ideal for those who wish to maintain a regular life, family and work schedule while still participating in treatment. The program also incorporates family therapy as VHS endorses the belief that addiction is a family disease that adversely affects the lives of those closest to addict.

Treatment begins with an initial evaluation and assessment to determine an individualized treatment plan. Each track lays out the appropriate frequency of weekly treatment for each client. All programs combine individual and group counseling, family therapy, couples counseling, addiction education and either a prevention or relapse prevention group.

The various therapies employed are based in CBT methodology and one-on-one sessions can be scheduled at any time throughout the week. Located in Essex County, New Jersey, Real House, Inc. operates two transitional care facilities and emergency shelters for women in Bloomfield and Newark. Founded in 2006, Real House also provides a co-ed standard outpatient track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at its facility in Montclair, New Jersey.

Real House endorses a method of treatment that integrates both substance abuse as well as developing the tools to deal with issues that arise in daily life. While many of Real House’s clients are court-ordered to attend treatment, the intimate groups and a treatment team that emphasizes the importance of personal connections foster a successful track record in motivating those clients who have resisted treatment in the past to commit to recovery.

Accommodations and Food

The Bloomfield residence houses up to 20 women and the Newark facility up to 16. The Bloomfield house is situated in a suburban neighborhood while the Newark is in an urban area. Both residences have backyards where residents gather for recreation and summer barbecues.

In the first stage of treatment, clients have up to four roommates. As they progress through the program, the number of roommates decreases. Residents who are promoted to house managers room together and are permitted in-room televisions and DVD players. All clients can have personal computers and cell phones but usage is limited to work and school purposes. These devices must be signed-in to the facility each evening.

Both facilities have common areas for TV and games. While the homes don’t have exercise equipment, many residents go for runs before their morning chores. Parks and shops are also within close walking distance of each residence.

In lieu of rent, clients are asked to contribute $100 each month to the house food budget—either from food stamps or their wages. The staff shops for food for the house and each client is left with a portion of their food contribution each month to buy special items. Meals are prepared for the house by the residents as part of their monthly chore rotation and life skills exercises. Women lacking cooking skills are coached by more experienced residents. The staff adjusts the menus to accommodate special dietary needs.

Treatment and Staff

Most residents are referred to Real House, Inc. by the local drug court. Treatment at Real House has four phases and the average stay is nine months. In the first phases of treatment, residents are transported to Real House’s Montclair IOP facility for additional treatment several times each week.

In Phase One, which usually lasts 30 to 60 days, residents are required to attend the IOP throughout the week in addition to five on-site treatment groups at the residence. Clients must also attend four local 12-step groups and obtain a sponsor. Phase Two requires clients to commit to a daily schedule with their counselor. They continue their on-site treatment groups, attend 12-step meetings and IOP groups. During this phase residents can also apply for passes to leave the home and are expected to find part-time employment or attend school. In Phase Three, clients start helping with administrative duties in the home, holding orientation meetings for newcomers and acting as an escort on outings. They are also able to apply for weekend passes home. They continue 12-step meetings and employment and/or school. Phase Four requires clients to be working full-time, studying and learn budgeting skills. They continue attending at least three treatment groups each week as well as 12-step meetings.

Groups in the Montclair IOP seldom exceed 12 participants and address topics such as relapse prevention, the disease of addiction, grief, anger management and using the 12-step framework. Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors such as LADCs, LCSWs and CADCs. The treatment team at each home includes CADCs and LPCs. Therapists and counselors use CBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and the Thinking for Change curriculum.

The Real House treatment team is qualified to treat co-occurring disorders. They also have relationships with nearby mental health clinics for clients who need medication for mental health diagnoses.

Extras

Family therapy, parenting classes and domestic violence intervention classes are also available in the IOP. Residents can have family visit their home on weekends from 12 to 2 pm.

Before completing treatment, each client creates an aftercare program with their counselor that may include periodic individual and/or group therapy in addition to 12-step meetings. The counselors at Real House also make sure to follow up with each client following treatment to check in their recovery progress.

In Summary

The four-phase transitional care program at Real House, Inc. offers women entering recovery a highly structured and supportive atmosphere in which to heal from addiction while building life skills. The nine-month time-frame ensures that clients will have ample time to process the challenges of daily life and employment with the counsel of their treatment team and peers before encountering the stressors of independent living.

Hopewell Clinical Substance Abuse Program is an addiction treatment program licensed by the state of Illinois. With locations around the Mississippi River’s western border in Quincy, Pittsfield and Macomb, clients have the option to choose between any of these convenient locations for treatment and care. The outpatient programs offered by Hopewell Clinical cater to both adolescents or adults.

Treatment and Staff

The substance abuse treatment programs for both adults and adolescents at Hopewell Clinical are based upon the initial evaluation. This assessment determines the level of care needed, whether DUI services are needed and which therapies would be most beneficial for the client. This individualized treatment plan aids the counselors throughout the recovery process and is subject to change depending on the progress of the individual.

The length of the program is also dependent upon how quickly the client progresses through treatment. Group sessions are held at various times at the various locations, but tend to allow for clients to maintain a regular work or school schedule, while still getting treatment. Individual and family therapy is scheduled separately depending on the needs of the client. Psychoeducation groups are also offered to clients and community members. The 12 steps are not integrated into the program; however, clients may be referred to local AA/NA meetings by the counselors if requested. It’s also worth mentioning, this is not a dual diagnosis equipped facility.

The staff at Hopewell Clinical consists of CADCs.

In addition to its substance abuse treatment programs, Hopewell Clinical also offers DUI treatment services ranging from minimal risk treatment to high-risk treatment. There are also services to aid clients in reinstating their license or any type of legal proceedings.

Founded in 2009 by Matthew Wood in Asheville, North Carolina, New Life Asheville is a sober living community for men and women. Wood, who has been clean and sober for ten years, felt that there was an unmet need for quality and cost-effective sober housing in the Asheville area. His own experiences of living in an unhealthy sober living home as a newcomer made him realize how important it was for those new to recovery to have safe and structured housing.

Accommodations and Amenities

New Life has 13 gender-specific sober livings, and a total 79-bed capacity. The cozy homes have unique exteriors, ranging from Cape Cod to bungalow style buildings. Additionally, New Life plans to open a new house in July 2016. The two female-only homes are a good distance from the men’s homes, and are supervised by a female director. Residents are paired in double occupancy rooms, and there are a few singles reserved for clients with seniority.

The houses are fully furnished, from can openers to washer and dryers. Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Cabinet space is assigned, and clients share the refrigerator. Additionally, they must bring bed linens, towels, personal hygiene, prescription medication (no narcotics), an ID, an alarm clock and money for food, as well as for other essentials. Laptops, recreational equipment, TV’s, cell phones, and cars that are legally registered are allowed, so that residents can feel at home, plus learn how to assimilate into society. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, a house computer, a landline with free long distance calls, utilities, laundry detergent and laundry rooms. Residential managers live on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must have completed detox. Those on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone are not allowed. Additionally, a 30-day minimum length of stay is required, but most clients stay between nine months and a year. New Life is deeply rooted in the steps, and asks that clients acquire a sponsor within two weeks of entry. Guided support is provided for those who need tips on finding the right sponsor.

While residents are urged to attend 90 meetings in 90 days, they must go to at least five weekly AA/NA meetings. Additionally, they must get a home group and a service commitment, which includes making coffee or chairing a meeting. Other requirements include obtaining a minimum of 30 weekly hours of employment, attending school or volunteering. Unemployed clients must be out of the house from 10 am to 3 pm Mondays through Fridays looking for work. Clients are not allowed to work in bars, or take on a third shift position.

Participation at the weekly house meeting, daily morning meditations, as well as performance of chores is mandatory. During the first 30 days, the curfew is 10:30 pm seven days a week. After that time, the curfew is midnight, followed by a 2 am curfew. At New Life, a random drug and alcohol policy is conducted, with a minimum of three alcohol and drug tests conducted on a weekly basis. Residents who relapse are immediately dismissed from the premises, but are admitted back on a case-by-case basis. Move in cost is $1,450, and includes a $700 30-day cost, as well as a $750 non-refundable entry fee.

Extras

Other services that are provided besides housing include group therapy by a CSAC and assistance setting up an aftercare protocol at a local outpatient facility. New Life is in close proximity from public transportation, and has easy access to many stores and 12-step meetings.

In Summary

While clients are expected to adhere to basic requirements, New Life does not take a cookie cutter approach with their clients. Besides offering a strong 12-step based program and a nurturing, family-style environment, clients have the option of seeing a licensed professional for counseling. New Life has an excellent reputation in the Asheville area, and many clients hail from other states, including Tennessee. Founded in 2016 by Stevie Williams just outside Asheville in Candler, North Carolina, Infinite Sober Living provides high-end sober living for an intimate number of young women. Williams, who is in recovery, opened the house so that women, especially those with co-occurring disorders, would have a safe and structured place to focus on their recovery. Infinite Sober Living emphasizes individualized recovery plans with the belief that each client is unique, and should be treated as such.

Accommodations and Amenities

Infinite Sober Living accommodates no more than six women at a time inside a luxurious brick red split-level home that sits on more than an acre of land. The 3,000 square foot property boasts five bedrooms and four bathrooms, a home theater room, a gazebo, outdoor volleyball net, a fenced in pool and a top of the line home security system. The interior is luxuriously furnished, with leather couches, wood floors, and modern wall art. Clients are paired in rooms which include full sized beds, dark wood furnishings, and ample closet space. Both shared and single bathrooms are available.

While clients are responsible for their own food, meal planning is provided, and clients are transported twice a week to the grocery store, typically a Whole Foods. Meals are provided in a spacious fully equipped kitchen, which includes a large stainless steel refrigerator. A weekly house dinner is provided, and clients dine family style and learn to become part of a sisterhood.

Other house amenities include an outdoor fire pit, arts and crafts/yoga room, Wi-Fi, coffee, linens, towels, Hulu, Netflix and a laundry room. Full time staff lives on the premises, and provides around the clock supervision. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas.

Rules and Regulations

All women must be 18 years and older. Additionally, clients taking mood disorder medications must have their regimen in place, prior to admittance. Documentation may be requested to ensure that the client is mentally stable and does not require intensive psychiatric care. Clients on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone, are not allowed. Benzodiazepines are also forbidden. Typically, clients have at least 30 days of sobriety or have successfully graduated from a residential treatment program. A three-month minimum length of stay is mandatory.

Requirements include attending all house meetings, being at morning meditation, participating in all activities and events, and not isolating or watching television before 3 pm. Performance of household chores is mandatory. After the first week, the women must spend 20 hours outside the house, by working, volunteering or going to school. Some residents participate in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Additionally, clients go through five phases. The initial phase includes attending 90 12-step meetings in 90 days, getting and working with a local sponsor and getting a home group. There are two 12-step meetings on the premises. Dating, visitors, overnight passes and concerts are not allowed. Clients also can’t leave the premises without staff. The curfew is 9:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 10:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays. During the second phase, the requirements are the same, but clients are allowed to leave the house unattended.

Level three parallels the requirements in level two except the curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight Fridays and Saturdays. By the fourth level, clients are allowed approved overnights, and after they have completed 90 meetings in 90 days, they are required to attend five weekly meetings. Upon successful completion of the prior phases, they enter the final phase. They also receive a reward of their choice, including a massage, pedicure or dinner at a nice restaurant. At Infinite Sober Living, random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Residents who relapse are dismissed from the premises, to ensure the safety of the entire household.

Extras

Other services besides housing include life skills, resume building, job assistance, support with finding a good sponsor, body image awareness, group exercise, nutritional education, equine therapy, yoga, Tai Chi, group therapy, psychiatric and outpatient referrals, experiential activities, and arts and crafts. During the weekend, clients participate in activities including hiking, bonfires, spa days, snow skiing, and movie outings.

In Summary

Williams, who lost her brother to addiction, is passionate about recovery and about helping her clients. She is in tune with their needs, and provides comprehensive services which are beneficial for young women who need extra support in early recovery. Infinite Sober Living does not like to disclose their address, for the safety and privacy of their clients.

Safe Place Foundation

Founded in 1988 by a recovering alcoholic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Safe Place Foundation provides sober living for men in early recovery. Additionally, they have recently included a two-week 12-step immersion program, and unemployed newcomers to Safe Place must complete the curriculum prior to entering the program. Safe Place Foundation believes that recovery lies in the pages of the Big Book.

Accommodations and Amenities

Safe Place Foundation includes two adjacent, old fashioned-style  homes. One of the houses was built in 1898, and was an inn for tired passengers traveling by stagecoach. There were stables in the back, and today, there are still underground tunnels. Safe Place Foundation has a 40-bed capacity, with six beds reserved for new clients, who do not have jobs. Men are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds, dressers and bedding. There are five single rooms, reserved for men with seniority.

The residents are responsible for their own groceries, which are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Many of the men qualify for food stamps, which assist towards the purchase of groceries. Assistance with the paperwork is provided. Clients waiting to get their EBT cards are provided with food. No one goes hungry. Amenities include laundry facilities, cable TV, Wi-Fi, a landline and house computers. Staff lives onsite and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must contact Safe Place Foundation and undergo a preliminary intake interview. The typical wait time for admittance is between two and six weeks. Safe Place Foundation looks for clients who want to stay clean and sober and are willing to work a 12-step program. Clients must have undergone detox prior to moving in. There is a nine-month maximum length of stay.

The introduction to the program is two-weeks and includes daily 12-step meetings, cooking classes, life skills workshops, recovery coaching, meal planning, step study, prayer and meditation. After that time, residents move into phase one which includes attending a minimum of four outside 12-step meetings, acquiring and actively working with a sponsor, attending two weekly step studies and participating in the on-site peer support groups. They must also get a home group and if unemployed, acquire work. The curfew is 10:30 pm seven days a week.

Phase two accommodates clients’ work schedules, but typically men continue attending regular 12-step meetings, working on their steps and meeting with their sponsors, as well attending house meetings.  While the curfew is midnight seven days a week, men who want to have coffee and fellowship after a late night meeting are encouraged to do so. Some residents, often the criminal justice clients, attend Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and referrals are provided if needed. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse, but are willing to recommit to their recovery are re-admitted on a case-by-case basis.

Extras

Job search assistance is provided, including resume writing and interview coaching. Clothing, shoes and boots are provided for men, especially those who need work attire.

As a non-profit organization, Safe Place Foundation relies on donations to offset program costs. They also accept non-perishable food items, washers, dryers, cleaning supplies and other household items.

In Summary

With executive director Mike Maynard at the helm, Safe Place Foundation is a wonderful place for men who want to rebuild their lives. Maynard, who has more than 24 years of recovery, is working on implementing an exercise program, as well as the services of a dietician into the curriculum. Safe Place Foundation is a sober living that truly maintains the integrity and altruism of 12 step principles. Additionally, they believe that one size does not fill all, and each client is treated with respect and individualized attention.

Belle Grove Springs is a men’s only CARF Accredited residential substance abuse treatment center in Louisa, Kentucky. It was established in 2013 by founder and CEO Tim Robinson and utilizes evidence based therapeutic methods. Both the 12-step philosophy and CBT into group and individual therapy. This facility is located near the border of West Virginia, in Fleming County, Kentucky and is operated under the umbrella of Addiction Recovery Care treatment services.

Accommodations and Food

The Belle Grove Springs facility is situated on 300 acres of rural farmland that includes a 22-acre lake. The residential quarters is a two story farm style home that can accommodate up to 16 clients in five bedrooms. The shared rooms are furnished with full beds, a dresser that is split amongst the roommates each taking one drawer and night stands. There are three bathrooms, a large living room with flat screen TV, foosball table, kitchen and dining room where the residents hang out together during their downtime.

There is an on site workout room where clients can lift weights, and the lake is a great location for fishing, paddle boating and canoeing. The facility also includes offices, meetings rooms, classrooms and a charming wraparound porch complete with rocking chairs. Belle Grove Springs is very close to the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Appalachian Mountains, so clients frequently hike and explore the terrain surrounding the residence. Clients are supplied with towels, linens, and cleaning supplies.

Changing eating habits is a big part of healing at Belle Grove, and all the food that is included with the clients stay is prepared with wholesome ingredients. Three meals a day are provided in addition to healthful snacks, like fresh fruits. Everything is prepared on site and clients dine together.

Treatment and Staff

A major component of the program at Belle Grove is the spiritual aspect, which includes not only the 12-Steps and Celebrate Recovery, with daily step work and regular AA or NA meetings, but involvement in the local church by attending services weekly and even participating in the choir. Typically clients stay in treatment for up to six months—though there are some that participate in the shortest program, which is 37 days, and some that stay for up to a year. Treatment includes one individual therapy session per week and several group sessions that cover topics such as relapse prevention, parenting classes, coping skills and identifying triggers.

There is also a holistic element to the programs that include regular exercise and a healthy diet. For clients who come to the facility with existing co-occurring disorders, there are medication management services, and visits with the clinic’s medical director and house RN. Clients aren’t allowed to bring cell phones or any personal devices into treatment with them, and are tested regularly for alcohol, drugs and nicotine. A multidisciplinary team that includes CADCs, LPCs and residential staff that are available 24 hours a day, and peer support also plays a big part in the program at Belle Grove Springs.

Extras

Workshops are available on topics like communication skills, employment training, cooking classes and house management skills, like cleaning and learning how to be fiscally responsible. A family program is offered to all clients and their families that involve both individual and group therapy.

In Summary

Though some may be unsure of entering into a treatment facility that is so heavily faith based, Belle Grove Springs welcomes all clients regardless of their beliefs. This is a great choice for men and presents them with evidence based best practice clinical models for recovery success.

Founded in 1984, New Freedom Center, Inc. has been providing outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment to the residents of Bismarck, North Dakota for over 30 years. Bismarck, the capital city of North Dakota, is home to several colleges including the University of Mary. The treatment team at New Freedom facilitate recovery of the body, mind and spirit by combining holistic and evidence-based methods.

Treatment and Staff

There are three levels to outpatient treatment at New Freedom Center. The most intensive track is the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) which meets for several hours of group therapy each weekday from 10 am to 3 pm. Clients participate in individual therapy at least once a week. In the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) clients meet for group therapy three nights each week and have individual therapy at least once a week. In the standard outpatient program, clients meet for group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed.

While the duration of each track is progress-based, the average stay in the PHP is four to six weeks and most clients take two to four months to complete their treatment program in the IOP. As clients progress, they step down to the next less intensive treatment track. Clients in both the PHP and IOP levels are also required to attend at least one 12-step meetings each week.

Group sessions uses motivational interviewing (MI), CBT and DBT and don’t exceed 12 participants. Groups are led by LACs and while counselors can address co-occurring disorders, New Freedom sends clients to a nearby mental health clinic for treatment and medication for mental health diagnoses.

Extras

Aftercare is provided through a weekly relapse prevention group. New Freedom Center also has a family program which includes individual family therapy, participation in multi-family support groups and introduction to fellowship programs for the families of addicts.

Founded in 1984, New Freedom Center, Inc. has been providing outpatient and residential substance abuse treatment to the residents of Bismarck, North Dakota for over 30 years. The capital city of North Dakota, Bismarck is home to several colleges including the University of Mary. The treatment team at New Freedom facilitate recovery of the body, mind and spirit by combining holistic and evidence-based methods.

Prior to entering New Freedom’s residential program, clients can enroll in the detox program at the local hospitals that partner with New Freedom to provide medical services to its residents.

Accommodations and Food

Clients are accommodated in one of two treatment facilities in an urban neighborhood of Bismarck. Men and women reside in separate gender specific buildings typically with 12 to 16 residents in treatment at one time. Clients are housed dorm-style, usually six per large room with a one shared bathroom for each dorm. Each building also has multiple common areas for TV and recreation as well as outdoor spaces that feature a volleyball court and areas for playing horse shoes.

Each facility has a fully-equipped kitchen and while clients receive a catered lunch each day, they are responsible for preparing their own breakfasts and dinners. Staff members do weekly shopping runs and clients can request special items.

After residents complete an initial 10-day stabilization period, they’re allowed cell phones and computers for personal use.

Treatment and Staff

The average stay in New Freedom’s residential program is four to six weeks. After admission, a client receives an individualized treatment plan that includes daily group and individual therapy. Group sessions addresses the disease of addiction, relapse prevention and life skills.

Group therapy uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT and DBT and groups don’t exceed 12 participants. Groups are led by LACs. While counselors can address co-occurring disorders, New Freedom transports clients to nearby hospitals and mental health clinics for medication and therapy for dual diagnosis support.

Residents are required to attend at least four 12-step meetings each week. New Freedom hosts several on-site and also transports clients to ones in the community.

Extras

Families can visit residents on evenings and weekends with staff approval. Families who wish to take an active role in their loved one’s recovery can also enroll in New Freedom’s family program.

For aftercare, some clients may choose to attend New Freedom’s outpatient treatment programs. Others can attend a weekly relapse prevention group for three months.

VanArk Behavioral Management is a multi-service substance abuse treatment facility based in Pikeville, Kentucky. For over a decade, VanArk has offered prevention, treatment and education for the Eastern Kentucky community. The facility was founded by Rhonda K. Clark and Mike Vance, who together have four decades of experience in the mental health field. In addition to the original Pikeville location, a new branch was recently added in Prestonville to serve a broader clientele. All services are outpatient and ideal for those who do not require intensive monitoring.

Treatment and Staff

VanArk provides a wide range of services including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone, DUI education and counseling and substance abuse treatment. Prior to admission, all potential clients are seen for a full screening which determines whether there is a need for dual diagnosis support or medication management. Non-medical detox is available for individuals who are dependent on opioids. All clients are frequently drug tested to ensure abstinence during the course of their treatment.

Clients enrolled in the MAT program are required to attend 12-step meetings in tandem with their medication as well as monthly group therapy and individual therapy once per month. The duration of MAT is determined by individual progress and decided upon by their primary therapist.

The DUI program is a psycho-educational track with varying degrees of intensity and lengths of commitment depending on the offense and evidence-based treatment methods are employed. First-time offenders attend weekly classes for a total of seven weeks to complete their program and classes also qualify as group participation. Second offender clients attend a total of 26 classes and group therapy sessions. Active participation and meeting with a case manager are essential to meeting court requirements to have a driver’s license reinstated. Triple and multiple DUI offenders have unique program requirements that are tailored to their needs and the requirements of the court.

All groups and classes are facilitated by LADCs. Staff members are able to have communication with employee assistance programs at the discretion of the client. For self-referred clients, individual therapy sessions can be scheduled to provide a structured approach to recovery. Most clients supplement their recovery with AA/NA meetings.

Extras

Additionally, VanArk provides specialized services for individuals who do not require treatment or medication management. Drug testing services are certified by Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association (DATIA) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

VanArk Behavioral Management provides treatment from two locations in Eastern Kentucky. Since 1978, the Dick Van Dyke Addiction Treatment Center has provided residential treatment for men and women in Ovid, New York. The facility offers gender-specific programming that treats the symptoms of moderate to severe chemical dependency. The Van Dyke ATC is accredited by CARF and is a member of multiple associations and consortium throughout New York state. The entire facility is tobacco-free and encourages clients to eliminate all chemicals and addictive substances from their lives. In addition to residential treatment, detox services are available.

Accommodations and Food

The Van Dyke ATC is located on a large and verdant campus in the middle of New York State. The facility is a three-story building that accommodates both treatment and housing under one roof. With 30 beds total available—15 for men and 15 for women—the building is divided by gender, with men and women quartered in separate wings. Clients sleep three per bedroom in twin-sized beds and rooms are furnished with shared dressers for storing personal belongings. Bathrooms are YMCA style with one per wing.

Each wing has its own common room with comfortable seating, couches and a TV for watching during approved hours. All food is served cafeteria-style three times per day. Snacks, coffee and tea are served throughout the day. Meals usually include healthy options with sandwiches for lunch and traditional comfort foods like spaghetti, fried chicken and potatoes for dinners. The cafeteria staff accommodates special options for vegetarians, vegans or those with other restrictions.

The facility also has areas for exercise and sports including a basketball court and hockey court located on the north side of the campus.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Van Dyke is divided by gender so clients feel safe discussing the specific personal issues that accompany substance abuse. Men typically work through authority issues and anger management, while women focus on toxic relationship issues and low self-esteem. Prior to enrollment, all clients must be seen by the intake staff for a full bio-psycho-social assessment. If medical detox is required, clients are first safely detoxed and given medication to assist in the process. Suboxone, Vivitrol, Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Disulfiram and nicotine replacement therapies are all available on-site. All Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is administered by a staff doctor to ensure the treatment is effective.

The residential treatment program is a short-term and intensive process to help clients achieve their recovery goals. All residents must be willing to enter treatment and be in need of a higher level of care as there are no outpatient services at the Van Dyke ATC. Abstinence is required at all times.

The treatment approach is client-centric to ensure residents feel comfortable and supported at all times. The clinical staff view alcoholism and addiction as treatable diseases that require diligent and immediate intervention in order for the individual to survive. Staff utilize evidence-based practices that include CBT and DBT techniques.

Clients attend daily group therapy and didactic lectures that lean towards psycho-education and focus on building a sense of community with their fellow peers. Individual therapy is also an essential component to the client’s process and the family may be involved in sessions as well. Dual diagnosis support is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.

All groups and individual sessions are facilitated by experienced clinical staff that include CADCs, LCSWs and LPCs. The staff also includes doctors, nurses and medical assistants for clients with medical needs or medication supervision.

Extras

Families are encouraged to stay active and participate in their loved one’s recovery. While there is not a specific family program, clients can schedule to have their family members or spouses attend a session with their primary therapist.

On weekends, visitors are permitted or clients may choose to attend organized group outings once the client has stabilized. Activities may include visits to the park, barbecues or movies.
