The Basics

The Phoenix, Arizona chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence opened its doors in 1960 with the mission to provide the community with advocacy, education and services that aim to improve quality of life by reducing alcohol and drug dependency.

By 2000, it had narrowed its focus and developed programs to help women battle substance abuse. It currently provides long-term outpatient treatment for women as well as a variety of residential and transitional care facilities for single women, pregnant women and mothers seeking recovery. The NCADD offers services to nearly 500 women each year.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient treatment at NCADD has three levels of care which clients progress through over the course of one year. All levels include group and weekly individual therapy in addition to case-management services.

Level one is Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), requiring clients to meet for group therapy three days a week. In this phase, group therapy addresses the disease concept of addiction, parenting skills, grief and relapse prevention. Clients are also introduced to the 12-step framework and are required to attend outside AA/NA meetings—the frequency depending on each individual’s treatment plan. Clients must search for a sponsor and actively work the steps.

Level two meets for group therapy twice a week. In this phase, groups focus on how to set healthy boundaries, relationship skills, working through abuse and creating a recovery-based values system.

In Level three, clients meet once a week for group therapy. Groups include DBT skills and a dual diagnosis group for those with co-occurring disorders. In this phase, clients work with a career counselor to meet their employment goals and may also receive parenting coaching.

Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and doctorate-level psychologists. Groups usually have 15-20 participants and use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in addition to DBT. The treatment team is trained to treat co-occurring disorders and a psychiatric nurse practitioner is available for medication management. Throughout treatment, clients receive case-management services to help them coordinate health care and the other supportive services that may benefit them and their families.

The NCADD is focused on healing the entire family of the addict and provides a family therapy group in addition to individual family therapy. Throughout outpatient treatment, each client’s case-manager helps her secure housing in the NCADD transitional care network if she’s eligible.

For over 50 years, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s Phoenix chapter has worked to help women overcome the particular challenges they face in ending substance abuse. Through long-term therapeutic support and extensive case-management services, the year-long outpatient program offers clients a chance to heal their bodies and minds and learn life skills that will provide new opportunities for years to come.

The Basics

Located in an urban stretch of  Astoria, Queens just outside of Manhattan, Reality House, Inc. offers both a co-ed outpatient program and transitional care substance abuse treatment for men. In operation since 1967, its new facility was built in 2013 and houses both programs. RHI has specialized treatment groups for veterans and HIV-positive individuals. Its mission is to “assist individuals, families and communities lead productive and positive lifestyles and to achieve higher levels of accomplishments.”

Treatment and Staff

RHI offers both a standard outpatient track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients enrolled in the standard track attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP attend group sessions two to three times each week and have individual therapy once or twice weekly. The duration of treatment is progress-based with most clients completing their treatment plan in three to six months.

Groups don’t exceed 15 participants and topics include relapse prevention, the disease model of addiction and general health and wellness. The cornerstone of therapy at RHI is CBT and therapists also use Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups are led by addiction counselors such as CASACs and Master’s-level therapists such as LMHCs and LCSWs. Residents with co-occurring disorders have access to RHI’s psychiatrist for medication management and can receive treatment for their mental health diagnosis from RHI’s therapists.

RHI encourages clients to use the 12-step framework. While there’s no requirement to attend 12-step meetings, they are strongly encouraged and several are within walking distance of the facility.

RHI has specialized treatment groups for HIV-positive clients including medical management, partner notification and bereavement programs. Specialized services for veterans include identifying traumatic brain injury, identifying Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and accessing veteran benefits and entitlements.

Those who have completed their treatment plan can attend RHI’s weekly relapse prevention group for on-going support. RHI also helps clients navigate the criminal justice system and access legal aid. It’s currently in the process of developing a family program to treat and educate the loved ones of clients.

In Summary

Reality House, Inc. has been providing New Yorkers with effective substance abuse treatment for nearly 50 years. Its outpatient program offers long-term treatment allowing clients to adjust length and frequency based on individual progress. It has specialized programs for HIV-positive individuals and veterans and decades of experience with the legal and criminal justice services of New York City. Van Hoose and Associates is a counseling facility located in Lexington, Kentucky. For over a decade, counselors Carla Van Hoose, Donna DePenning and Alan Gooch have provided mental health services for individuals and families in the Lexington area. Specializing in substance abuse and chemical dependency issues, all services are outpatient and tailored to the individual.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to being accepted as a client, all individuals must schedule an appointment for an initial diagnostic assessment. The purpose of this screening is to assess the level of care required and to develop an individualized recovery track. If the client displays a need for medical detox, they are referred to a trusted facility for these services. VHA utilizes evidence-based practices that include CBT and psychodynamic processing. Services are available for men and women as well as adolescents.

All practitioners are LCSWs and Master’s-level addiction counselors. Each therapist has over 25 years of experience and over a decade working in a private practice. Therapists also provide dual diagnosis support by treating depression, bi-polar disorders, PTSD, anxiety and personality disorders. Support and treatment for eating disorders, process addictions and sexuality issues are also available.

Group therapy is available for substance abuse clients as well as adult children of alcoholics. Group work lays the foundation for developing a support network though many clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step meetings for additional support. Individual therapy is the primary method of treatment at VHA and is available for all clients including adolescents on a case by case basis.

Couples and family therapy are also available. Additionally, specialized services are available for adult survivors of child abuse as well as adult children of alcoholics.

Comprehensive Community Services‘ (CCS) mission is to “enhance the ability of clients and their families to succeed in life.” Founded in 1970, it offers outpatient substance abuse treatment in Greeneville, Kingsport and Bristol, all in the Mountain Empire region of northern Tennessee. CCS also provides co-ed residential treatment in Kingsport.

Treatment and Staff

CCS offers both standard outpatient treatment, consisting of two to eight hours of group and individual therapy each week, and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of nine to 12 hours of group and individual therapy each week. Clients in standard outpatient attend group therapy once or twice each week and have individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP usually attend group therapy three times each week and have individual therapy once a week.

The duration of each client’s treatment plan is progress-based, with an average program stay of six months. Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including MSWs, MFTs and LADCs. Treatment is based on The Matrix Model and uses CBT, the 12-step framework and Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) in addition to Hazelden‘s Co-Occurring Disorders curriculum. Clients are encouraged to attend community 12-step meetings on their own while in the program.

The treatment team addresses co-occurring disorders in therapy, but it will refer clients who need dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics.

Family therapy is available to loved ones of clients who wish to participate in treatment. For aftercare, clients who’ve completed their treatment plan can attend CCS’s weekly relapse prevention group.

The Basics

Comprehensive Community Services‘ (CCS) mission is to “enhance the ability of clients and their families to succeed in life.” Founded in 1970, it offers residential treatment in Kingsport, a small city in the Mountain Empire region of northern Tennessee. CCS also provides outpatient substance abuse treatment at three locations in the region, in Greeneville, Kingsport and Bristol.

Accommodations and Food

Up to 42 clients reside in a two adjoining residences. Men and women are housed in separate areas in each residence, and all residents have at least one roommate.

The facility employs a kitchen staff to prepare standard American cuisine for residents. Menus can be altered to accommodate dietary preferences and allergies. Residents receive chore assignments which include doing the dishes after meals, and all residents are expected to clean their rooms daily.

While television isn’t available at CCS, residents can go for walks outside the facility and bring reading material to treatment with them. Personal computers and cell phones are not permitted.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admission, residents are assessed and given a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy. Most residents attend seven treatment groups each day and have individual therapy several times each week. Treatment groups can be large, sometimes involving the entire residence, but smaller gender-specific groups are available for some treatment topics.

Groups are led by Master’s-level therapists including MSWs and MFTs who use CBT, the 12-step framework and Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT). Group topics include relapse prevention, recovery skills and creating spiritual support.

Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings. Each Tuesday the residence has a facilitator lead an on-site 12-step meeting. Other days, residents familiar with the meeting format lead 12-step meetings for their peers.

The treatment team is experienced in treating co-occurring disorders, and a psychiatrist makes weekly visits to the facility for medication management.

Extras

On Friday and Saturday nights CCS hosts movie nights for residents. Case management services are available for clients needing help locating post-treatment housing and healthcare. For aftercare, many alumni of CCS’s residential program can enroll in outpatient treatment at one of its nearby outpatient locations. For clients from other areas of Tennessee, CCS can help them locate outpatient substance and mental health treatment in their areas.

The Basics

Cumberland County CommuniCare was founded in 1998 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the home of Fort Bragg, a major Army base. The organization provides outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Cumberland begins with an in-person assessment with one of the organization’s counselors. The incoming client fills out paperwork and discusses their substance abuse history. After this meeting the counselor determines the client’s level of need and prepares a treatment plan. If the client is in need of more intensive treatment, he or she is usually referred to an outside residential or detox program.

Cumberland’s primary curriculum is the IOP which lasts for three months and consists of both group and individual therapy. Group meetings are offered 8:30 am to 11:30 am, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Counselors in these meetings use a variety of treatment techniques including CBT, Matrix Model, aggressive replacement therapy as well as relationship and family skills. The groups vary in size and but usually consist of about 10 clients per group and are led by one counselor. The counselors also focus on the effects of drugs and alcohol on the human brain and what makes a brain healthy.

Although Cumberland is not 12-step based, the counselors do somewhat implement the steps in treatment and definitely encourage clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings while in the program.

Cumberland is dual diagnosis and has a doctor that meets with clients with potential co-occurring disorders once a month. Clients can also Skype with the doctor on a regular basis.

Extras

When clients leave the IOP, they have the option of enrolling in Cumberland’s relapse prevention program. This program lasts for six weeks and meets for group meetings twice a week. The group meetings focus largely on sharing and relapse prevention techniques to help keep the clients sober. Individual meetings are also available based on the needs of the clients.

Cumberland also facilitates individual family groups, but only after the client consents and asks for these meetings.

The facility has a number of outpatient adolescent programs including a juvenile assessment center, youth leadership development program and a program called Reclaiming Futures which focuses on developing systems in local communities to help at-risk youths.

In Summary

Cumberland County CommuniCare offers an affordable option for adult men and women looking to get sober in the Fayetteville area. The relapse prevention program offers clients the opportunity to step down gradually from the IOP. The visiting doctor who provides clients with co-occurring disorders access to medical advice and treatment in the framework of a substance abuse program is an additional benefit.

Located in the Georgia capital of Atlanta, Accelerated Recovery Centers is a facility that exclusively treats alcohol dependence and abuse. It does not admit or treat individuals who have opiate, stimulant or behavioral addictions. It works with clients who voluntarily want treatment and does not accept court-ordered individuals or other mandatory cases without appropriate motivation. The treatment programs are evidence, medicine and science based.

Treatment and Staff

Accelerated has three personalized levels of care: mild, moderate and severe, and all are named after the severity of alcohol dependency and abuse. Each level includes intensive days, genetic assessment, neurological testing, laboratory testing, psychological assessments, communication and attachment style assessment, medical treatment, relapse prevention medications, individual therapy, clinical staff, continuing care and guarantee conditions. Moderate and Severe personalized levels of care allow clients to have relationship therapy, analyze their relationship compatibility and have continuing care and on-call support.

The Mild personalized level of care is for clients who do not use alcohol daily, have no withdrawal symptoms, little or no consequences associated with alcohol but mild depression and anxiety. Also, the individual has never been to a treatment center before and he or she has a support system.

The Moderate personalized level of care is for individuals who use alcohol daily, may or may not have withdrawal symptoms, may or may not require medically supervised detox, may or may not have consequences correlated with alcohol use and experiences moderate depression and/or anxiety. The individual has either not gone or has gone to a treatment program. Their support system is mainly together.

The Severe personalized level of care is for individuals who use alcohol daily, have withdrawal symptoms, require a medically supervised detox, have consequences associated with alcohol and experience moderate to severe depression and/or anxiety. The client has been to a treatment program more than twice and may require treatment for a mood disorder or bipolar disorder. Their support system is broken.

Accelerated prides itself on only using personalized, individual therapy for its clients. Clients receive six hours of psychotherapy for duration of 12 days. Accelerated has private detox, hospital-based detox, emergency detox and post-acute detox program. Private detox is conducted in the client’s own suite with their own private nursing stuff. Eligibility for this detox program is determined by the staff and for clients who private pay. Hospital-based detox is for clients who are medically ineligible for private detox and for clients who want to use their insurance to pay for detox services. Accelerated contracts with two detox hospitals in the Atlanta area. Emergency detox services are offered through the facility’s hospital partners and are open 24 hours per day, seven days per week for private pay clients and for clients who wish to use their insurance. Post acute detox program is modeled after the protocols developed by Dr. Sherry A. Rogers in her book “Detoxify or Die.” The facility uses state of the art technology along with diet, fitness and nutrition to further rid the body from chemical and pollutants.

Accelerated’s framework is built upon dual diagnosis support. There are doctors on staff and seven to 11 clinicians rotate between each client. Accelerated’s staff credentials include Board Certified Coach (BCC), Certified Addiction Counselor-Level II (CACII), Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), LCSW), LMFT, LPCs, Master’s (MS), MD, MED, PhD and PsyD.

There are five phases in Accelerated’s Alcohol Rehabilitation. The first phase is the Orientation phase. During this stage clients meet with the Program Manager to make sure their paperwork is in order. Then they meet with the Director of Nursing for a health history and the Medical Director for a physical examination. Clients are drawn blood at this stage in order to create an individualized health plan. After, clients are introduced to their alcohol rehab treatment team.

The second phase is Withdrawal Management in which the client’s goal is to eliminate alcohol from their system. The process lasts for five days. In this stage, clients are given medication to eliminate their cravings.

The third phrase is Sobriety Acclimation which lasts for 21 days. Clients meet up with their treatment team and discuss their individualized treatment plan.

The fourth phase is Life Optimization. In this stage, clients work on resolving issues and are introduced to specialists and subject matter experts.

Fifth phase is The “D.” At this phase, clients have reached their one year anniversary of being sober. Accelerated honors the client with a gold “D,” which is a souvenir to show clients they have conquered their addiction.

In Summary

Accelerated Recovery Centers is unique because it exclusively focuses on alcohol abuse and dependence and offers only private, clinical care. It treats a variety of different individuals and is a facility that has thorough individualized treatment and health plans.

Founded in 2002, Connections Counseling is a certified outpatient facility for alcohol and drug treatment, as well as mental health issues, in Madison, Wisconsin. It offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults and adolescents, as well as court evaluations, interventions and holistic treatment methods.

Treatment and Staff

The IOP consists of a combination of individual and group therapy; meeting three times a week in three-hour increments. Both morning and evening sessions are offfered. The program utilizes a range of evidence-based treatment modalities, such as CBT, as well as educational groups, family therapy, art therapy, experiential therapy—including yoga and meditation—and relapse prevention. For PTSD or similar trauma-related issues, EMDR is also available, as is support for clients with a dual diagnosis. Connections Counseling offers a separate IOP track , using all the same treatment methods, for adolescents. Both programs rely heavily on the Matrix Model and 12-step principles.

Staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, CSACs, LPCs, MDs, LCSWs, LMFTs and Master’s-level counselors.

Early intervention and court-ordered drug and alcohol abuse assessments are offered, as are individual, group and family therapy on a standalone basis. Aftercare is offered in the form of tapered off outpatient treatment, usually involving a weekly group focusing on relapse prevention strategies.

Connections Counseling also has a specialized Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) option for clients battling severe depression, as well as a partnered program through the University of Wisconsin that provides early intervention and marijuana and substance abuse education to college kids, focused mainly on harm-reduction strategies and healthier behaviors.

Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Harvest of Wilmington is an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility that has been around since 1997. Though originally geared towards DUI/DWI cases, the program has since expanded to include psychological assessments and other related services.

Treatment and Staff

While the program’s primary focus is on court-ordered clients facing DUI/DWI charges, treatment in the form of individual and group therapy is offered in four different levels. The Alcohol and Drug Education and Traffic School (ADETS) is a 16-hour program spread over five sessions and geared towards first time offenders. The next level is the short-term outpatient program, which involves 20 hours of treatment; the long-term track requires 40 hours and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) requires 90 hours.

Same-day appointments and walk-ins are available, though each perspective client must undergo an initial assessment. Treatment modalities include CBT and 12-step support. If inpatient treatment is needed or desired, outside referrals to can be made.

The staff consists of Master’s-level drug and alcohol counselors all with degrees in clinical psychology.

Extras

Harvest of Wilmington also offers an aftercare program that generally lasts for 20 hours over the course of several weeks. Case management services, psychological assessments and a six-week anger management program is also available if needed. People suffering from co-occurring disorders can attend standalone counseling for depression and anxiety. Couples counseling is also offered.

In Summary

Although treatment is somewhat limited to court-ordered clients, the program does provide treatment using evidence-based practices and an introduction to 12-step recovery at a variety of intensities. Those in need of additional psychological support can get the counseling they need as part of one of their programs or on its own. While some people facing substance abuse and addiction issues may need a more comprehensive or residential program, Harvest of Wilmington remains a worthy and affordable option.

Howard C. Samuels, PsyD, is the founder and CEO of The Hills Treatment Center in Los Angeles, California. Samuels is a licensed therapist who holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in addition to being an oft sought after professional known for his expertise in the field of addiction and recovery. Samuels has appeared on numerous television shows including Good Morning America, TODAY and Entertainment Tonight.

Samuels first began his training and work as an addiction counselor at Phoenix House in New York. He relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his Master’s degree and landed a job at the original Promises West LA, and subsequently helped open the prestigious Promises Malibu. Samuels co-founded a rehab facility called Wonderland Treatment Center before ultimately founding The Hills. His experience in dealing with addiction is vast but he is especially regarded for his knowledge in dealing with co-occurring disorders, sex and love addiction and interventions for substance abuse. Additionally, sober companionship is available as part of the intervention services provided by Samuels and The Hills.

The Background

Born and raised in New York City, Samuels hails from a very prominent East Coast family. His father was a successful politician and all of his siblings excelled academically and sought higher education at prestigious colleges. Samuels, however, battled a learning disability that was never properly diagnosed, struggled in school and started fighting his own addiction demons at a very early age. When he was only 19 years old, all of his troubles were brought to light in a very public arrest at JFK airport for cocaine and heroin possession. He was in and out of treatment after that but did not truly commit to sobriety until his father died suddenly of a heart attack in 1984. Samuels has now been clean and sober for over 30 years. As one would expect, his personal experience with addiction often informs his work and creates a level of empathy often necessary to reach those in the depths of their own substance abuse. While Samuels had planned to attend NYU with sights set on a film career, he ultimately decided to devote his life and career to the field of addiction, alcoholism and recovery.

The Approach

Samuels is a big proponent of family involvement in a loved one’s intervention. Still, he truly believes the difficult but necessary boundaries family members create when someone they love is struggling with substance abuse or addiction are key to that person’s chances at survival and long-term sobriety. He advises relatives and friends to gather, sans any young children, and discuss the facts surrounding the alcoholic or addict, how their behavior has impacted them and what they what they’d like to say to them. He then meets with the family in order to practice what’s planned—identify and rehearse the list of behaviors that will no longer be tolerated and discuss potential reactions and responses from the loved one who is struggling. Samuels and the family then decide on a treatment facility to suggest. From there, the family selects a private location and invites the person struggling at a time when hopefully he or she is sober. At the intervention, Samuels advises avoiding the words “alcoholic” or “addict” or coming from a place of anger or blame. Instead he suggests focusing on starting the intervention with calm statements of loving concerns, beginning statements with with “I” or “We.” He contends the family should then ask the individual to confirm the existence of a problem. They should then be willing to listen to the addict’s response before replying with loving affirmations followed by the offer for treatment, and a explanation of what it will entail. Samuels strongly believes an intervention and subsequent invitation to get help should be the family’s final ultimatum but that the therapist or interventionist is there to help ease the denial or anger of someone who denies treatment. Samuels is a proponent of both formal, structured alcohol and drug addiction treatment in a rehab setting as well as 12-step communities such as NA and AA. The Hills incorporates 12-step recovery principles, individual therapy and group therapy into treatment in addition to providing detox if needed.

Post-Intervention and Summary

If the client does not agree to go to a treatment facility, Samuels still deems any intervention a success as it at least forces the family to set a boundary and sends a message to their loved one that they will no longer tolerate his or her actions. He also believes it sets the wheels in motion for the individual to eventually get sober, even if it isn’t immediately.

Lasting Hope Addiction Recovery Program, often referred to simply as the HOPE Program or Lasting Hope, is a faith-based substance abuse treatment curriculum offered through a network of churches throughout the country. The program originated in a Phoenix church in 2008, but today both local Arizona clients and those nation-wide have access to this program. Treatment itself is outpatient with a primary emphasis on the Christian faith.

Treatment and Staff

The intention at Lasting Hope is for clients to attend treatment without it affecting their normal schedules. The program includes weekly group therapy sessions which are divided into three segments of treatment. The first segment is called “Ready” and consists of prayer, sharing testimonies and preparing to “meet with God.” The second phase is “Set” which entrails an introduction to program material, studying the Bible and sharing personal stories. The last stage of every group is “Go” which involves reading through the Bible and going over work from the Formula 4 Life book which consists of steps that aid the client with sobriety by way of faith. This book is the essential text of Lasting Hope and is implemented throughout the course of the program.

The duration of treatment is dependent on the progress of the client but can last as long as necessary for recovery. Clients are also welcome to come back to the group even after they have completed treatment to maintain their relationship with God, a support group and to reaffirm their sobriety. The 12 steps are not integrated into the program and support for co-occurring disorders is not available. Additionally, there is no individual therapy available at this time.

The staff at Lasting Hope is comprised of pastors from the various churches that participate.

Founded in 2006, the Sage Neuroscience Center offers mental healthcare and outpatient substance abuse treatment in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Services include outpatient detox and a 12-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which requires clients to meet three times a week for three hours at a time.

Connections Recovery Residences operates two sober living homes for men and women in Nashville, Tennessee. Residents participate in active daily schedules in a safe and structured environment. The Basics

Community Psychiatric Institute (CPI) was founded in 1972 in East Orange, New Jersey, a small town less than 20 miles west of Manhattan. The facility provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at CPI begins with an in-person assessment with one of its counselors. If they determine the client is a good fit for CPI’s services, then he or she must apply for Medicaid to cover the cost of the program as it does not accept private insurance or self-pay. Clients who are in need of a higher level of care are referred to outside residential or detox programs in the area.

CPI’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) consists of both group and individual therapy. The program meets Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm, and the length is flexible with clients being able continue in treatment as long as they need. CPI can also design a lower intensity program if necessary.

The groups usually consist of 16 to 20 clients and are led by one counselor. The meetings focus on a number of different treatment techniques and topics including Seeking Safety, the 12 steps, relapse prevention, social skill development, the Matrix Model of recovery as well as a wellness and recovery action plan. Counselors also occasionally use music and art therapy.

CPI provides dual diagnosis support and clients with potential co-occurring disorders meet with mental health counselors regularly and have a check up with a psychiatrist once every three months. There is also assistance with medication management. Community is affiliated with a local physician group that provides on-site physical health evaluations and testing.

Though clients must stay for a minimum of 30 days, there’s no limit on how long they can stay provided they follow the rules of the complex.

The Basics

The Pat Moore Foundation in Costa Mesa, California, is a not for profit facility that has been providing detox and residential substance abuse services for more than 30 years. Treatment is individualized and offers elements of the 12 steps, group and individual therapy, and holistic therapeutic options, including equine therapy.

Accommodations and Food

The residential housing for the Pat Moore Foundation is based on a campus that is between two of Southern California’s beautiful beaches, Huntington and Newport. The living quarters are private cottages that sleep two, with a small kitchen complete with full refrigerator and stove, a couch, dining table and full bathroom. The bedrooms have full beds, nightstands and dressers for each client. Linens are provided in every room as well. Though the campus is for both men and women, the cottages are gender specific.

Twice a month a nutritionist comes to the facility to offer personalized tips and classes. Three meals a day are provided and made on site by the kitchen staff. There are set menus and the clients dine together in the large, shared dining hall or the picnic tables outside.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment is evidence-based and gender separated, offering clients several group therapy sessions per week and one individual session. Typically, clients stay in the residential program for about 90 days, although 30 and 60 day options are available. If the client needs to begin treatment with detox, the facility provides separate housing for the five to seven day stay that is monitored 24 hours a day by medical staff.

Once in the residential process, the day begins at 7 am with meditation and house chores, which is on a rotating schedule, followed by breakfast. There are daily assignments, like journaling or Big Book study, or house meetings where clients get together as a check in with staff. There are support group meetings daily on campus and clients attend off site meetings as well several times a week. The facility welcomes expert guest lecturers every week, and the staff is comprised of Master’s-level therapists and doctors, like psychiatrists, LPN and addiction counselors. There are also support staff that are on campus 24 hours a day and are there to show the clients around the campus, be on hand to answer questions or if guidance is needed, and assist the clients with their therapy schedules.

The Basics

Quiet Creek Farm is a not-for-profit residential substance abuse treatment facility for men located in Irvine, Kentucky. This facility is set on a working farm and offers treatment that is based on 12-step principles, as well as holistic therapeutic methods in nature and provides a safe environment for clients to heal on their own term and own pace.

Accommodations and Food

The Quiet Creek facility is on 65 acres of rural farmland with horses in Estill County Kentucky. Accommodating up to eight men in a four bedroom, two-bathroom bunkhouse, the shared bedrooms house two clients in twin beds with dressers, nightstands and closet space. The residence is equipped with a large living room and dining room, kitchen and sitting areas. The facility provides a limited number of towels and linens, but offers a community on site laundry machines is available for all clients to use.

The residents share chores on a rotating cleaning schedule, and cook each other meals periodically. All the food is provided by Quiet Creek along with a prepared menu, and a small fee applies monthly for snacks, or extras like tobacco products, that are requested by the clients. All meals are eaten as a community in the dining room, and if there are food allergies or other special requests, the staff is happy to honor them as long as they are notified when the client checks into treatment.

There are no cell phones, laptops or iPads allowed while the client is in treatment, but there are house phones available. After the first 30 days at the facility clients can start taking trips off of the farm for outings, including trips to the local gym, or store runs. Every off site activity must have an employee of Quiet Creek with them. During the week there is a curfew of 11 pm and weekends is 12 am. There are visitation hours daily in the afternoon as long as the client participates in morning chores and activities, and attends to their horse.

Treatment and Staff

Every client who comes to the facility for the first time must have already completed detox and immediately enter a “blackout” phase. This means they are not allowed any phone calls or to leave the facility unless so that the client can acclimate to the schedule and protocols of treatment. Typically the men stay for a minimum of six months. Although at Quiet Creek, there is an emphasis on there being no particular amount of time that clients are expected to stay—time in treatment is determined by progress and not the calendar.

A typical day would involve a morning meditation, followed by breakfast, then a  group session that may involve outdoor activities and experiential techniques. There is a strong emphasis on building healthy communication skills. The programs are designed so that the clients not only learn from their counselors, but also each other, which encourages openness, and accountability within the community, as well as a way to establish new and healthy relationships with their peers. There are also weekly house meetings and daily 12-step meetings that everyone is required to attend and obtain a sponsor.

The staff of Quiet Creek Farm are Master’s-level LPCCs, LCSWs and CADCs and bring over 35 years of combined experience in the field of addiction.

The Basics

The Pat Moore Foundation is located in sunny Costa Mesa, California. This comprehensive facility has been offering treatment for substance abuse and eating disorders for more than three decades. In addition to detox and inpatient care, Pat Moore offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and extended care services that are individualized and include elements of CBT and the 12-steps with group and individual therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Though its not a requirement, most of the clientele who participate in the IOP have gone through residential treatment at Pat Moore, and either live close enough to attend programming on the main campus, or are living at the sober living facility and have access to the transportation that is provided. Treatment services offers include weekly individual therapy sessions, medication management, dual diagnosis therapy (if necessary) and group sessions, which are gender specific.

The IOP is a nine-hour a week program that consists of clients coming to the treatment facility for three hours at a time, three times a week. These program hours typically include group therapy that covers relapse prevention, coping skills, identifying triggers and getting acclimated back into family life and their communities. Treatment also incorporates the 12-steps and other spiritual counseling options, such as Celebrate Recovery. There are also process groups, psychoeducational lectures and trauma focused groups.

Therapy methods can include elements of CBT, DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Pat Moore Foundation works closely with the UC Irvine Psychiatry program, and is able to offer many levels of counseling services in addition to addiction services. This clinical staff includes Master’s-level psychiatrists, LMFTs and LPCs, many of which are also in recovery.

Extras

While participating in the IOP, the facility offers a multidimensional family program, which consists of individual counseling and multi family groups on a weekly basis. There is an alumni program for graduates of treatment, and a treatment guarantee for those who have participated in at least 90 days of treatment and relapsed within 12 months of treatment. They are offered 21 days of residential treatment for free.

The Basics

Located just outside of Houston in Egypt, Texas is the Great Oaks Recover Center, which offers detox and residential substance abuse treatment for men and women. The comprehensive facility offers individual and group therapy and dual diagnosis care that incorporates elements of CBT and the 12 steps, as well as some holistic methods.

Accommodations and Food

The living quarters of Great Oaks is a large farmhouse on 50 acres of land that is just under an hour away from Houston. The home holds up to 32 clients at a time in semi-private rooms with half baths in each, The spacious and modern home, which houses the men and women in separate wings, is quiet and serene, allowing for clients to unplug and focus on recovery while enjoying the beautiful landscape. The brightly decorated home is furnished with two large living rooms with plush couches in front of a flat screen HD TV, a fireplace and state of the art kitchen with stainless steel appliances. All food is provided by the facility and prepared by an on site chef. All meals and snacks are fresh and use organic options when possible, and the men and women clients dine together.

Treatment and Staff

Great Oaks staff takes a thorough assessment of each client coming to the facility for treatment and determines whether or not a five to seven day on-site detox is necessary. The detox ward can accommodate up to five clients at a time, and it’s monitored 24 hours a day by the medical director and LPN. During this stage every client is assigned an individual therapist who helps the client get acclimated to the facility and ease him or her into the recovery process.

Once an individual begins the residential stage of treatment, they participate in several group sessions per week that cover the 12 steps, Big Book study, relapse prevention and psychoeducational groups. There are some groups that are gender specific and some that are co-ed, but everything is tailored to suit the client in the most productive way possible. There are specialty groups offered for clients who have a dual diagnosis or have relapsed several times, as well as integrating nutrition and exercise into every day programming. Throughout their time at Great Oaks, clients and staff work together to design an aftercare plan, which may include continuing on at the facility and participating in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for an additional 30 days.

There are areas of the facility that are designated for clients who smoke, but smoking is not allowed anywhere near the detox or residential facilities. Clients have to wait for seven days before making phone calls, and cell phones and laptops aren’t permitted while in treatment.

The multidisciplinary staff at Great Oaks includes Master’s-level LCSWs, LADCs, CADCs, medical doctors and nurses.

Extras

There is an enclosed patio with covered benches and tables where clients can relax on days off of programming, a wellness center with fitness machines and a pool with deck chairs. There are recreational activities offered on almost a daily basis that may include yoga, football, or volleyball, as well as barbecues and movie nights.

There is a weekly family program offered at Great Oaks where clients and their family members can participate in group or individual therapy sessions.

Great Oaks Recovery invites their clients to unplug and break some unhealthy habits while enjoying the peace and quiet of their serene surroundings. Though the initial program generally lasts 30 days to two months, they offer continued support and resources for continued healing for the long term.
