Denver HealthThe Basics

Denver Health was founded in 1860 in Denver to provide medical services to the Rocky Mountain Region of Colorado. Over time, services have evolved to include mental health services and eventually created substance abuse treatment programs in 2004. Today, it provides a diverse number of outpatient treatment programs servicing both adolescent and adults in the greater Denver area.

Treatment and Staff

Denver Health’s intake process begins with an in-person assessment with a counselor to help determine the client’s level of need. If the counselor determines the client is a good fit for Denver Health’s services, he or she is placed on a wait list to enter the outpatient program. Those who would perhaps benefit from a more extensive level of treatment are referred to local residential programs or the facility’s own detox program.

Denver Health’s detox program operates out of a 100-bed, clinically managed, non-medical treatment facility. It lasts anywhere from three to seven days. In addition to the actual medical detox, clients in this program also attend group and individual therapy focused on education and motivational counseling.

Denver Health’s Substance Abuse Treatment, Education and Prevention (STEP) outpatient program lasts for 16 weeks and is designed for adolescents and young adult clients between the ages of 12 and 21. The STEP program consists of both group and individual counseling. The intensity and number of meetings per week is dependent on the individual and their own progress but counselors definitely work with clients to set up a program that maximizes their recovery. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques in the group meetings including Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and relapse prevention techniques. Individual sessions are scheduled accordingly for each client on a case by case basis. Also, all clients in the outpatient program are regularly drug tested and breathalyzed. Although Denver Health is not 12-step oriented, counselors occasionally refer older clients to outside AA/NA groups if they believe it to be beneficial.

Denver Health is dual diagnosis and clients who have potential co-occurring disorders meet with an on-staff mental health therapist and psychiatrist to help address their specific issues. Denver Health’s staff consists of a mixture of LCSWs, LPNs, registered nurses, behavioral health technicians and addiction counselors.

Extras

The facility also offers a women’s treatment program, a specialized track that addresses the unique needs of women and expectant mothers. This program consists of group and individual counseling for substance abuse issues and the intensity and length is entirely dependent on the counselor’s assessment. Perinatal care is provided and overseen by a physician who specializes in family medicine and addiction medicine.

Although Denver Health does not have an official aftercare program, counselors set up an individualized plan with each client to help ensure their sobriety upon program completion. Clients can also return for individual counseling at any time. Denver Health also offers family group meetings that consist of the client, their parents and a counselor. These meetings focus on substance abuse education as well as healing and sharing.

There is also Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) available. The facility offers Suboxone to clients with opiate addictions. In addition, Denver Health has DUI and court-ordered programs.

In Summary

Denver Health offers a wife variety of outpatient options for adolescents, young adults and adult women. The use of MI and CBT in the group meetings places a large focus on changing mental behavioral patterns, which is advantageous for clients who may struggle with unrelenting negative thoughts. The focus on having a solid plan for sobriety when leaving the program sets clients up for not only a chance at a successful transition back to reality, but also with a plan for leading a sober lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

Programs for early intervention and a 15-week DUI session for court-ordered clients are available at The Connection’s Michael Perlin Center for Substance Abuse Intervention. The Bettor Choices program provides outpatient treatment for problem gamblers at 17 locations throughout Connecticut and involves individual, group, family and marital counseling as necessary.

The Connection also provides a number residential programs for substance abuse treatment and transitional living, including Connection Lodge—a sober living facility for men ages 18 and up. For mental health exclusively, Cornerstone is an affordable housing and psycho-social rehab program and The Norton Court Supportive Residences and Park Street Inn are designed to help clients live independently. Founded in 1997, Turning Point Recovery Residences is a non-profit organization that operates four sober living homes in Nashville, Tennessee. Catering to both men and women, these transitional programs are designed for clients who have completed an inpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and require that residents attend regular 12-step meetings during their stay. Many also attend local outpatient drug and alcohol counseling as well.

Accommodations and Amenities

Of the four Nashville locations, one is designated for women and the other three are for men. The female house, on Raymond Street, opened in 2001 and has five bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The Lutie and Valeria Street houses for men are within three blocks of each other and were opened in 1997 and 2001, respectively. The Lutie house has five bedrooms and two and a half baths while the Valeria house has seven bedrooms and three full baths. The Riverside house for men,  Turning Point’s flagship residence since 1997, has five bedrooms and two and a half baths. In all, Turning Point Recovery Residences can accommodate approximately 52 clients: 16 women and 36 men.

Each home has relatively basic accommodations including a a common sitting area with comfortable couches, carpeted floors and spacious kitchens. All homes also feature a “show willingness” bedroom that has four bunk beds that clients share before graduating to larger double rooms with more privacy. The Valeria, Raymond and Riverside houses have front porches, fenced in backyards and patios. Each location is within walking distance of public transportation, grocery stores and neighborhood AA/NA/CA meetings.

Rules and Regulations

To qualify for one of the Turning Point Recovery Residences, clients must agree to sign a behavioral contract requiring them to get a sponsor within their first week of residence and complete all 12 steps during their stay (a minimum of 90 days). Other rules include obeying all house curfews, becoming gainfully employed, attending regular house and 12-step meetings and completing assigned chores. Though residents are initially limited in their interactions with the opposite sex, more privileges can be gained as they progress through the program. Each home also has three on-site staff members who help direct meetings and oversee house operations. Smoking is permitted in designated areas.

Turning Point Recovery Residences are structured, 12-step based sober living environments that are geared to promote long-term sobriety, independence and personal responsibility. Though not frivolous, the homes and programs of  Turning Point Recovery Residences come with a respected history in Nashville and strong relationships with a number of local treatment facilities. Founded in 1985, Connections Community Support Programs is a large, CARF-accredited, non-profit organization with several locations throughout the state of Delaware. With branches in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties, CCSP offers some residential options however treatment for substance abuse is primarily limited to outpatient care.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all clients undergo an initial assessment to determine which program would best suit their needs. Although traditional detox is not available on-site, Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) is offered by way of Suboxone.

Once stabilized, clients begin an individualized treatment plan that combines group and individual therapy with various psychotherapeutic practices available including CBT. Treatment and Staff

Clients in need of a non-medical detox can enter its 14-day inpatient program which has nine beds for men and three for women. Case management and daily meals are also provided during this phase.

Once completed, clients are given an individualized treatment plan and begin the recovery process on an outpatient basis. Day and evening sessions are offered and all programs are equipped to provide support for co-occurring disorders and Spanish-speaking clients.

Programs generally include a combination of individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices including the Matrix Model, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and psycho-education. An introduction to the 12 steps is also offered. As treatment progresses, groups evolve to focus on relapse prevention and social reintegration strategies, life skills and parenting classes.

Staff includes CADCs, Master’s- and PhD-level counselors and peer support personnel.

Extras

CADA offers early intervention services with treatment professionals who help friends and families safely and effectively confront their loved ones about substance abuse. For court-mandated clients, diversionary sentencing programs and tracks for repeat offenders are offered.

The Perinatal Program is similar to the outpatient track but also provides meals, transportation and on-site childcare. Topics include pregnancy and parenting as well as nutrition and exercise. The program typically lasts for six to 12 months.

CADA also has a number of family and youth services available through its subsidiary facility, The Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Treatment Center.

Founded in 2014 by Jeff Morrow in the community of Linda Vista in San Diego, California, Coast Recovery provides sober living for women. Its mission is to provide safe and structured housing so that clients can focus on their recovery, and rebuild their lives. Coast Recovery is located in close proximity to the beach, public transportation and trolleys.

Accommodations and Amenities

Coast Recovery accommodates ten women, who reside in spacious triple-occupancy rooms furnished with twin beds, dark wood dressers and nightstands. One room has blue and white walls, large windows covered with a white sheer panel, allowing sunlight to bathe the room. Fresh cut flowers arranged in vases provide striking accents.

The clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped tiled kitchen, which has wooden brown cabinets and granite countertops. Amenities include a house computer, laundry room, Wi-Fi, large screen TV’s and a barbecue grill. A house manager lives on the premises. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients undergo an intake process, which includes meeting the staff, and the other residents, as well as undergoing a drug test to ensure that they are clean and sober. A 90-day minimum length of stay is required, so that clients can build a foundation in their recovery. At Coast Recovery, a zero tolerance policy is enforced. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted, and residents who relapse must immediately leave the premises.

The first ten days is a probation period. During this time, the women are allowed to have limited contact with friends and family, are required to check in with the house manager on a daily basis and can only attend meetings, as well as seek sponsorship. Residents are encouraged to attend a recovery support group of their choice, including 12-step and SMART Recovery. The curfew during this time is 9 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays.

After the probation period, requirements include attending a minimum of four weekly recovery support meetings, obtaining a sponsor within 30 days and working with staff on goals. Clients must have attendance slips signed by the meeting’s secretary, which are presented during the weekly house meeting. Performance of weekly household chores is mandated, and beds must be made on a daily basis. The curfew is midnight from Sundays to Thursdays, and 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Residents are not allowed to use hair dye inside the house, and parking is restricted for the house manager and senior residents.

Founded in 2015 just outside Tupelo, in Belden, Mississippi by executive director Becky Weatherford, Talbot House provides family-style sober living for ten women. Weatherford has been clean and sober since May 18, 2008. Talbot House was once known as the Gardner-Simmons Home for young girls without a home. In keeping with the spirit of the house, Weatherford’s mission is to provide a home for women in need. The house still has the original Garner-Simmons plaque, to memorialize the two young women that it was named after, Robin Simmons and Margaret Garner, who both died in a tragic accident.

Accommodations and Amenities

Talbot House is a 5,000 square foot Colonial-style southern mansion, complete with a Southern-style brick porch with Greek columns, rocking chairs, potted plants and ceiling fans. The house includes a landscaped yard, a paved walkway and an old-fashioned streetlamp. Talbot House accommodates no more than ten women, who are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds with brand new memory foam mattresses and other furnishings. There are two women to a bathroom.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. Cooking classes are provided as part of life skills training. Amenities include transportation to meetings and appointments, Wi-Fi, cable TV, a house telephone, laundry room, a vegetable garden. Weatherford lives on the premises, and acts as residential manager. There are two house cats, Mr. Kitty and Lena, who provide furry companionship. Smoking is permitted outside only.

Rules and Regulations

Women who wish to reside at Talbot House must be 21 and over. Most clients have successfully graduated from a residential treatment program. Others are accepted on a case-by-case basis. A three-month minimum length of stay is suggested. At Talbot House, sobriety comes first and during the first month of their stay, the women must get grounded in a solid recovery program.

Clients are encouraged to follow whatever recovery program works best for them, including 12 step, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery. They must attend a minimum of three weekly meetings, but most clients at Talbot House attend a meeting on a daily basis. The women are also encouraged to attend outpatient treatment, and many clients move in with aftercare protocols in place. Local outpatient referrals are provided.

Other requirements include acquiring and working with a sponsor or mentor, performing household chores and attending the weekly house meeting. At Talbot House, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is usually employed, but relapsers are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as long as the circumstance don’t affect the safety of the household. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

Other services include a free yoga class on Wednesday mornings. The 30-day cost is $700, without transportation, and $800, including transportation. An additional $250 security deposit is required. In the near future, Talbot House will offer a weekly therapeutic processing group facilitated by a licensed therapist.

As a non-profit organization in partnership with CREATE Foundation, Talbot House welcomes donations to offset costs.

In Summary

This beautiful mansion offers clients a place to call home and allows women a chance to get grounded in their recovery. Talbot House is a gem nestled in a picturesque landscape that is reminiscent of the Old South, and with Weatherford at the helm clients receive individualized attention, as well as ample doses of hospitality.

Founded in 2015 in the San Diego neighborhood of Lemon Grove, California, by Wendy Kane, a registered addiction specialist, Peaceful Winds is a unique co-ed sober living community for men and women. Peaceful Winds employs the Wellbriety approach to recovery, which utilizes Native American traditions and principles. At Peaceful Winds, their mission is to help clients find a sense of purpose and meaning, as they transition back into life.

Accommodations and Amenities

Peaceful Winds is nestled on more than an acre of land, and has panoramic mountain views. The facility includes a large yellow ranch-style house, and two separate studios in the back. Accommodations are gender-specific, and there is a nine-bed capacity. Typically, the men live in the main house, and women are accommodated in the studios. The rooms include two or three twin beds, dark wood dressers, Native American artwork, a closet and large windows.

Healthy food is included in the cost, and clients take turns preparing dinner. The huge garden provides ample fresh fruits and vegetables including cucumbers, artichokes and zucchini. There are four different kinds of grapevines. Free-range chickens on-site provide eggs. The kitchen is open at all hours and coffee and different flavored creamers are readily available. Clients that are home usually eat family-style, and residents who are off to work, often pack a lunch. On Sundays, there is a special dinner, where all residents gather and break bread.

While Kane does not live on the property, she is only ten minutes away and is often the premises. House manager Harris Lovato, who is from the Jicarilla Apache Nation and who has been sober for a decade, is on hand to provide wisdom and recovery coaching tips to clients. Niki, the resident pooch, provides canine companionship. Amenities include a large fenced in swimming pool, meditation areas, cable TV, Wi-Fi, utilities, a fire pit in the garden area, a large fenced yard, washer and dryer.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety. Those with less time are admitted on a case-by-case basis. The average length of stay is 13 months. Requirements include attending a minimum of three recovery support meetings, including 12 step or SMART Recovery, and being at the weekly house meeting. A speaker meeting is held on the premises once a week. Speakers include members from recovery support groups and licensed social workers.

Clients are encouraged to work, go to school, participate in vocational training or perform local community service. Clients are also welcome to participate in gardening, journaling and quiet reflective time. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Peaceful Winds, a zero tolerance policy is enforced. Relapsed clients must leave the premises to ensure the safety of the household. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Other services besides housing include yoga, financial planning and Wellbriety meditation groups. Peaceful Winds is a member of the San Diego Sober Living Coalition, which stresses high standards from its affiliates.

A strong sense of family is stressed here, and clients receive ample support from Kane and Lovato. This is a unique sober living home, which offers clients a chance to really focus on their recovery, find a protocol that works, while being exposed to the beauty and spirituality of the Native American culture.

Founded by executive director Jody Davis in 2006 in New Britain and Berlin, Connecticut, Coram Deo Recovery offers transitional living for financially challenged women, as well as criminal justice clients. Besides housing, clients also learn basic living skills, so that they can successfully shift back into society. Davis who has over 25 years of sobriety, is a certified life coach. Coram Deo means “Before the Face of God,” and besides housing, the facility offers faith-based recovery support.

Accommodations and Amenities

Coram Deo has a 54-bed capacity and has five residences including Addison’s House, Esther’s House, Ruth’s House, Sarah’s House and Theresa’s House. The houses are decorated with country-style furnishings. Accommodations vary per house, but rooms include twin beds, dressers and nightstands.

Each house has a food pantry, which provides additional nourishment for those in need. Clients typically qualify for food stamps, and assistance is provided in applying for benefits, as well as obtaining clothing, and other essential items. Meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include all utilities, laundry facilities and transportation. Staff lives on the premises and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Coram Deo offers clients individualized recovery protocols. Length of stay is typically between six months and one year. Requirements include attending 90 recovery support meetings in 90 days, including 12 step or Celebrate Recovery, being at the house meeting and performing household chores. Clients are encouraged to leave the house each day and look for work, attend outpatient treatment, perform community service or enroll in vocational training classes. At Coram Deo, faith-based recovery support services are provided. These include one on one spiritual mentoring, as well as goal planning and Christian step study.

In those instances, the support of being around other women of like mind is extremely beneficial. The sober living facility’s name is inspired by the adage, “every cloud has a silver lining.”

Accommodations and Amenities

Silver Linings Recovery Homes includes four houses, and accommodates a total of 27 women. Typically, there are two women paired in a room. There is a master suite at one home, which accommodates three clients. Rooms include twin beds, one large shared dresser and one closet.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, a flat screen TV and laundry facilities. Thanks to a Roku streaming stick, clients can use their Netflix accounts, and watch shows on a flat screen TV. Residents are expected to pitch in monthly and purchase paper products and other home supplies. Each house has a live-in residential manager.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must have a minimum of two weeks of sobriety or have successfully graduated from a residential treatment program. A three-month length of stay is recommended. During the first two weeks, they must attend daily 12-step meetings. Other requirements include participating in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), going to school, finding a job, or performing community service. During the first week, the curfew is 10 pm. After that time, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. After the fifth week, the curfew is midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays.

After the first two weeks, they must attend five weekly 12-step meetings, look for a sponsor, find a home group and maintain a productive schedule. Clients must have attendance slips signed by the meeting’s secretary. The slips are turned in at the weekly mandatory house meeting. The house meeting includes opening up with the Serenity Prayer, discussing a recovery-related reading and having individual check-ins, where each client shares about personal concerns. The meeting also ends with a prayer.

At Silver Linings Recovery Homes, there are two drug screenings conducted on a weekly basis, including one scheduled after the house meeting, as well as a randomly scheduled test. Breathalyzers are used if clients appear intoxicated. Silver Linings Recovery Homes practices a zero tolerance policy and residents who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises.

Located in Arlington, Virginia, The Women’s Home is a long-term sober living facility that has provided transitional residential support for women since 1963.  Since its founding, the organization upgraded to a larger home, close to Virginia Hospital Center, and is now licensed by the state to provide drug and alcohol treatment as well.

Accommodations and Amenities

The three-story, 4,800 square foot home can accommodate 12 women in double and single-occupancy bedrooms and two shared bathrooms for all residents. There is a community TV room with several plush couches, exercise equipment and  a computer with internet access. In addition, the home has a proper living room, full kitchen with a pantry and a dining room with a long table for residents to share meals together. Clients pay for their own groceries and cook their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

All residents are required to attend at least five AA/NA meetings a week while also keeping a log of their daily recovery activities. This can include reading, prayers, calling or meeting with a sponsor, or doing stepwork. Upon intake, residents are given individualized treatment plans that determine the topics that should be focused on during their individual and group therapy sessions run by the staff. Spruce House is geared for men who have successfully completed residential treatment. While a few clients are Pasadena Recovery Center alumni, attendance at the facility is not a mandatory prerequisite for admittance. A three-month minimum length of stay is encouraged.

Requirements include attending a minimum of five weekly 12-step meetings, performance of household chores, working the steps, and being productive during the day, whether it be working, going to an outpatient program, doing volunteer work or attending school. Some residents participate in an outpatient program at Pasadena Recovery Center. Clients must wake up at in the morning, eat breakfast, do their chores, and leave the house, so that they can work at being productive, while focusing on their sobriety. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

Founded in 2003 by Dennis Haut in Davenport, Iowa, Unity House of Davenport is a sober living community for men. Haut, who got clean and sober in 2000, was inspired to open Unity House after he volunteered to go over to Iraq as a Department of Defense civilian. While he was in the Middle East, he helped install armor and fix air conditioning on the military Humvees. Ultimately, after experiencing such oppressive living conditions, he felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation for what he had back home. When he returned to the States, he was inspired to open Unity House, so that he could help other men find the gratitude and serenity he had discovered. The first house that opened was filled in one day, and Unity House has expanded to include eight houses, with a 65-bed capacity. Recently, Unity House was granted a non-profit status.

Accommodations and Amenities

The houses all have different exteriors, ranging from bungalow to Colonial-style influences. At Unity House, there is a firm belief that isolation is detrimental and can potentially cause relapse. With this in mind, clients share double, triple or quadruple occupancy rooms. Bedrooms include bunk beds, dressers and nightstands.

While residents are responsible for their own groceries, no one goes without food. Unity House receives ample donations of meat from a local market on a weekly basis. Some clients qualify for food stamps, and assistance is provided with the application process. Those in need of clothing are also provided donations. Amenities include cable TV, a washer, dryer, bedding, telephone and all utilities. Each house has a live-in residential manager.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must have completed a medical detox, if necessary. They undergo a comprehensive interview with staff to ensure that Unity House is a good fit. Average length of stay is between three and five months, but some clients have stayed at Unity House for longer than a year.

CAST’s sober living is housed in luxury apartments found in two adjoining duplexes. Clients are only accepted post detox. Treatment and Staff

The recommended minimum attendance to the CAST IOP is four weeks, with the majority of clients going for sixteen weeks or more. The IOP meets Mondays through Fridays and shares its group and workshop schedule with the program set up for sober living. In each case, a client is paired with a lifestyle coach and undergoes random drug screenings. They are expected to take part in seven groups per week as well as four individual sessions with a therapist of their choice, offering CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR and psychodrama among other modalities. Some of the workshops offered include relapse prevention, music, writing and art workshops, as well as improv. Clients may also undergo two neurofeedback sessions a week. On weekends, IOP clients get to attend activities, workshops and outings meant primarily for those in sober living. These include sound therapy sessions, philosophy and spirituality classes, mindfulness meditation, yoga and neighborhood walks.

CAST is staffed by three resident advisors, four Master’s-level therapists, a medical doctor, a neurofeedback tech, two group facilitators and two administrative staff members. There is someone at the sober living complex 24/7.

In the case of CAST’s sober companions, they may be hired to travel with clients on family or business trips during especially stressful and triggering times, or guide them and support their sobriety through a transition such as a move or death of a loved one. Addiction Recovery Center of the Black Hills has three locations in South Dakota; Hot Springs, Rapid City and Custer. This facility, which was founded in 1974, provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is a comprehensive combination of traditional and holistic options offered through group and individual therapy.

Treatment and Staff

An intake counselor performs a standard chemical dependency evaluation then determines the level of care necessary. IOP groups are offered in the evenings either Mondays through Wednesdays, or Tuesdays through Thursdays to work around work and school schedules, and the focus varies a bit depending on what groups you attend. Some specialize more on relapse prevention or how to refrain from illegal activity while under the influence and some emphasize mental health and the effects of alcohol on the brain. There is also a specialty IOP that was designed by the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute that uses CBT to explore how habitual drug use began for the individual clients. That schedule runs on a more flexible schedule than the other IOP’s.

Treatment for both the adolescent and adults tracks utilizes the same therapy methods, like art therapy, Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) and the 12 steps. There is also an educational aspect to the programs helping clients learn the root of their addiction, identifying triggers and learning to deal with cravings. Depending on the needs of the client, individual therapy sessions are available one to four times a month, and aid in helping them track treatment goals. An added element to the adolescent treatment is the emphasis on zeroing in on self-esteem issues and relationships with their families. These programs last for about 24 weeks, with an option to step down to less intensive therapies requiring fewer treatment hours.

Between the three locations there are 12 licensed counselors that split their time at the facilities. These therapists are typically Bachelor’s or Master’s-level and have experience with substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment.

Located in the Texas capital of Dallas, the Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas (UITCT) clinic is an Urban Indian Health Organization (UIHO) assisted by the Urban Indian Health Institute. Treatment and Staff

The outpatient program supports and provides counseling to clients aged 14 and over for up to six months. It provides its own individual counseling utilizing CBT, cognitive restructuring, transaction analysis, Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) and Brief Therapy. Clients are asked to attend weekly hour-long counseling sessions for six months. Dual diagnosis support is also available for clients who have been diagnosed by an outside psychiatrist.

While there is no regular group therapy, UITCT does provide a quarterly group called the Healing Circle. This program allows for family members to share their story and the struggles they have encountered in dealing with loved ones with substance and/or alcohol abuse issues.

The program does incorporate the 12 steps, but for clients who are not receptive to this philosophy, other options—such as attending church services—are also incorporated into treatment.

Altogether, UITCT has 22 staff members (including the dental department and the pharmacy). There is a staff medical doctor as well as a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner and two medical assistants. Omada Behavioral Health Services is licensed by the state of Minnesota to provide outpatient substance abuse treatment to the Northfield, Minnesota community. The program implements individualized care and credentialed staff utilize evidence based methods during traditional therapeutic sessions to help clients accomplish their personal recovery goals.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment can begin, clients are given a chemical health assessment to help the counselors better understand the level of care needed and to develop the unique treatment plans that dictate the frequency and duration of treatment.

Therapy is primarily based in CBT methodology through individual, family and group therapy. One-on-one and family sessions are scheduled independently, while group sessions are scheduled intermittently Monday through Friday between 9 am and 9 pm. Clients may attend group as often as their schedule allows.

OBHS also offers addiction education and awareness classes, prevention seminars and recovery support. The 12 steps are not incorporated into treatment, however clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings outside of treatment with referrals provided by staff.

The staff at OBHS consists of LPCs, LCDCs and LSWs.

Extras

The primary service provided by OBHS is the substance abuse treatment program, however therapy and counseling services for mental disorders and illnesses are also available. In addition, OBHS also has a strong referral system for those who seek more intensive treatment including inpatient treatment or detox services.

Through education, evidence-based therapies and prevention, OBHS aims to give its clients the best possible chance for recovery.

Betty Wyman, Interventionist

Betty WymanThe Basics

Based in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Betty Wyman is one of the best-respected interventionists in the world. Wyman received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Claremont College, and a doctorate of philosophy in criminal justice from Pacific Western University. Many of her clients are high-profile individuals, including actor Rob Lowe, who listed Wyman as a treasured friend and confidant in the acknowledgments of his book, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography, actress Drew Barrymore and Grammy Award-winning singer Cee Lo Green. She was also supposedly a sober companion for Britney Spears.

The Background

As the story goes, Wyman began her career in the criminal justice field, serving as a probation officer in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. She became interested in helping addicts and alcoholics and went on to work director of the Exodus Recovery Center and in the Behavioral Health department for the now defunct Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital in Marina del Rey, California. Wyman also learned about addiction and recovery first-hand during her brief marriage to Dallas Taylor, the drummer for Crosby Stills Nash & Young. They supposedly met while he was volunteering at the ASAP Family Treatment Center, where she worked as a counselor. Wyman also worked as a behavioral science consultant for Twin Towers Corrections Facility and as a counselor at Promises Malibu. She later went into private practice, opening Wyman Consulting, a company specializing in professional treatment services, including interventions and recovery coaching.

Wyman is also an outspoken advocate for recovery. In a 1997 Los Angeles Times article, she applauded then-Councilman Mike Hernandez for speaking up about his drug addiction, and expressed her outrage that editorial writers of the LA Times, the Mayor and five of Hernandez’s council colleagues had teamed up, pressuring him to resign from his job. Her belief was that Hernandez had admitted that he was an addict and that was the first step towards his recovery. Additionally, she viewed him as an inspiring figure for other suffering alcoholics and addicts. Her mother is Rosalind Wiener Wyman, a former Los Angeles City Councilwoman.

The Approach

Wyman is said to take a no-nonsense approach when it comes to doing an intervention, or working with clients. She assesses the situation, gathers family members and loved ones, locates an appropriate residential treatment and/or detox facility, and handles the preparation, which includes writing letters to the client. One of the participants is designated to be the client’s escort to the proper treatment facility. Additionally, this participant is a “buffer” should the client become enraged during the intervention.

After that, the intervention meeting is scheduled, and typically takes place at the client’s home. She talks to clients one-on-one, presents them with letters from their loved ones and informs them of the consequences of their drug addiction, should they continue on that path. If the intervention goes according to plan, the client will go to treatment immediately. If the client refuses, Wyman works with the participants on letting go and learning boundary skills. After the intervention, there is a post intervention meeting where participants can share their feelings, and decompress.

Wyman is a strong proponent of the AA fellowship, and believes that 12-step meetings, and working the steps, are an integral part of a client’s recovery protocol. Additionally, Alanon is highly recommended for families.

In Summary

Wyman believes in a long-term recovery protocol including 12-step meetings, sober companionship, relapse prevention planning and outpatient treatment when appropriate. While she works with many high-profile clients, she has been in the business for almost three decades and rigorously enforces each client’s privacy. When it comes to interventions, Wyman is the real deal.
