First Step Recovery Centers is a non-profit organization located in Memphis, Tennessee. This outpatient facility is in the heart of midtown Memphis, near downtown medical facilities including the VA Hospital and the Memphis Mental Health Institute. First Step Recovery Centers is easily accessible by public transportation and offers dual diagnosis support and individualized treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Treatment and Staff

First Step Recovery Centers has a standard outpatient program, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), DUI courses, psycho-educational classes, individual therapy and a partnership with local sober living facilities. Prior to admittance, all clients are screened with a comprehensive assessment by intake counselors. Clinical staff then determine the primary concern of each individual and assess the acuity of their needs. Since First Step Recovery Centers does not offer detox, clients in need of medically supervised detox are referred to an outside trusted facility.

Treatment in the standard outpatient program is group therapy using evidence-based treatment. All clients attend one-hour groups one to two times per week depending on their progress through the program. First Step Recovery Centers works to provide an empathetic arena for clients to process their emotions and behavioral choices with both staff and their peers. If a potential client prefers to not attend groups, they may choose to instead only attend one-hour individual sessions with their primary counselor.

The IOP provides support and care for individuals with both chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Three times per week, clients attend three-hour sessions that incorporate educational courses and group sessions. Groups are scheduled Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm and alternately on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 to 7 pm. Individual therapy sessions are also scheduled. As a client progresses through treatment, they may reduce their hours of treatment as they approach discharge.

All groups and educational programs are facilitated by CADCs.

Following completion of treatment, clients in need of housing may benefit from First Step Recovery Centers’ partnership with Mid South Sober Living.

DUI clients attend the Alcohol and Drug Safety School that is certified by the State of Tennessee. The program is 12-hours and designed to provide basic knowledge and evidence of the effects of drug and alcohol on the human body. Completion of the program and attendance of 12-step meetings will make the client eligible for reinstatement of driving privileges.

Associated with Loyola University Maryland, the Loyola College Alcohol and Drug Education and Support Services is an outpatient treatment program that serves the Loyola student population struggling with alcohol and drug use. As a branch of the Office of Student Support and Wellness, this mental health service is operated by credentialed professionals who aim to facilitate emotional, physical, spiritual, professional, educational and social growth for the Loyola University Maryland student body.

Treatment and Staff

The methods of treatment employed at the Loyola outpatient clinic are evidence-based and include both CBT and Motivational Therapy (MT). While treatment is not 12-step oriented, there are nearby off-campus meetings and students are referred upon request.

The Alcohol and Drug Education and Support Services offer individual therapy with sessions scheduled weekly depending upon the client’s unique needs, schedule and the acuity of their substance use. While there is not a detox program or dual diagnosis support, staff includes the program’s director who has a PhD, an MBA and a credentialed LADC who sees between 300 to 400 students on average per year.

Loyola College Alcohol and Drug Education and Support Services is a standard outpatient treatment program with services limited to one-on-one therapy sessions. However, the credentialed staff utilizes evidence based treatment and referrals are available as needed. The Basics

Located in the cattle town of Lakeview, Oregon, Lakeview Center for Change (LCC) is an outpatient substance abuse and health counseling facility. It is one of the few substance abuse and counseling centers in all of Lake County and as such provides a valuable mental and behavioral health resource to the community.

Treatment and Staff

Depending on the client, the staff at LCC uses a variety of therapeutic methods including CBT, DBT, MRT and RET. The Stages of Change model is also integrated into treatment. While the facility is not 12-step oriented, it does use the disease model of addiction combined with evidence-based practices. All treatment plans incorporate group and individual therapy with most clients attending four hours of group therapy and an hour of individual therapy each week.

LCC staff works with the client’s primary care physician for medication management. Additionally, staff facilitate any required detox services with the client’s physician and the local hospital.

LCC staff includes owner Barbara Vandenberg (MA, Level II CADC, Level II National CAC, CPS) and co-occurring disorder Clinical Supervisor Daryl Cooper (MSW, LCSW). Staff-to-client ratio is typically one-to-ten.

LCC also offers court-ordered treatment for adults and youth, a DUI Program, an MIP Program, Mental Health Assessments, general counseling for depression and anxiety, parenting counseling and anger management.

In Summary

Vashon Youth and Family Services is a non-profit organization that has been providing social and wellness services to clients and the Puget Sound community for over 30 years. Located on Vashon Island, Washington just west of Seattle, clients have access to both rustic Northwest nature with the resources of Seattle just a ferry ride away. VYFS offers an outpatient substance abuse treatment program for young people and their loved ones.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at VYFS has a strong emphasis on individualized treatment and potential clients are given a mandatory full diagnostic evaluation prior to entering the program. Following the evaluation, a unique treatment plan is developed and clients may attend any of the group therapy scheduled in the evenings, seven days a week. Although VYFS does not host on-site 12-step groups, clients are encouraged to participate in the program and to attend meetings outside of treatment.

VYFS provides a well-rounded selection of group topics including addiction/abuse process, relationship counseling, anger management, stress management, wellness, co-dependency, grief counseling, recovery planning, coping for antisocial behaviors and self-medication. All groups utilize evidence-based methods, primarily CBT.

The staff credentials at VYFS include a B.S., a B.F.A, an MS, an MA and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

In addition to the substance abuse counseling and treatment services, VYFS also offers a variety of other social services to clients and their families. Additional programs include general mental health counseling for adults and adolescents, childcare services, an LGBTQ youth program, parenting classes, education and prevention programs and vocational services.

The Background

The Approach

Oyler and her team at Divine Interventions have four goals for the process of an intervention—to realize the nature and degree of the addiction, to understand the treatment options, to employ the process of intervention and to educate all involved in this process. They use a different approach for every client. The process of an intervention with Divine Interventions begins with an initial consultation which is done over the phone. This conversation gives Oyler and the staff at Divine Interventions an understanding of the situation and the specifics of the client’s addiction and history. This helps inform the team in regards to the best structure and plan for success.

Through phone calls and email, Oyler and her staff prepare the family for the intervention day. Part of this preparation is coaching through each intervention member’s script, understanding of the particular addiction and emotional counseling. Through these calls and the assessment, Oyler is able to identify the proper treatment facility that best suits the client’s needs. Oyler encourages family and friends’ participation in the intervention to employ consequences as a last resort, believing that support and love are the key elements to convincing an addicted loved one to seek treatment. The intervention approach for all clients at Divine Interventions is structured around boundary setting. Oyler believes this approach is the least likely to engender resentments from the client towards the family members and friends participating in the intervention.

After careful consideration, Oyler and her team determine the type of treatment best for the client. This treatment consists of detox, residential treatment, outpatient treatment and continuing care. During the intervention, the team shares their thoughts and wishes for the client, and if the desired outcome is achieved, the client goes directly to a treatment facility. When Oyler engages with the client and the family in therapy it is CBT focused.

Post-Intervention and Summary

While the client is in treatment, Oyler and her staff remain in contact with the family, and check on the client periodically. This contact is over the phone or in person. Divine Interventions is available for family members and loved ones throughout the entire process, offering counseling, assistance and support. Divine Interventions provides a specialist to guide the client from the treatment facility to their home post-treatment. This guidance is referred to as a sober escort, and this escort is available to accompany the client to possibly difficult situations such as court hearings or reunions with friends. This sober escort is an extension of the sober coaching available to guide the client back into their daily life and help acclimate the client to their “new normal.”

A vital part of the service provided by Divine Interventions is support post-intervention, for both the family and the client. All are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings and Alanon meetings, and sober escorts are available if desired. Founded in 2004, Life Recovery Center is an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment and behavioral health facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. With four locations within Indianapolis and one in North Vernon, Life Recovery Center serves clients from Marion, Johnson, Hamilton, Boone, Hendricks, Hancock, Jennings, Bartholomew and Jackson Counties.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, clients undergo an initial assessment to determine which program would best suit their needs. Both the basic outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) incorporate individual and group therapy using evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT and psycho-dynamic processing. Those with co-occurring disorders can also receive treatment, but programs are limited to those aged 18 and older. The organization also offers individual counseling for clients suffering exclusively from mental illness. Though Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is not available at Life Recovery Center, outside referrals for Suboxone services are available.

Staff consists of LCSWs, LCACs, CADCs, LACs, Licensed CSWs and Master’s level counselors. Many of the staff are also in recovery themselves and lend their personal experiences to treatment.

Extras

The Mount Vernon location provides a special, state-certified domestic violence intervention as an adjunct program to the facility’s other treatment tracks. It offers gender-specific classes and relies on the Cognitive Accountability Training (CAT) approach, an evidence-based method designed to help address abusive behaviors.

Family therapy can be provided as an add-on to any of the above programs. Aftercare is in the form of the Life Recovery Center Alumni Program which consists of regular group sessions available free of charge to those who have completed primary care.

Other services include Christian-based counseling, on-site drug testing and urinalysis/breathalyzer tests. Treatment for gambling addiction, employee assistance programs, parenting groups and PRIME for Life classes (for court-ordered clientele) are also available as are addiction and trauma groups exclusively catered to women. Life Recovery Center offers support for Spanish speakers as well.

The Basics

Cornerstone Behavioral Health Center (CBHC) is a division of Grant-Blackford Mental Health, a non-profit corporation that provides mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Located in Marion, Indiana, CBHC works closely with the other divisions of Grant-Blackford, creating a strong network of resources and support for clients and the community at large. CBHC offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and an adolescent substance abuse treatment program.

Treatment and Staff

CBHC offers three addiction treatment tracks: two adult IOPs and an adolescent track. Clients must first go through an initial evaluation to determine which track best fits their needs and to develop an individualized treatment plan that dictates the frequency of sessions. All programs integrate treatment modalities that focus on the physical, psychological and social aspects of addiction, but CBHC does not specifically offer dual diagnosis support.

Therapies offered are CBT-based and combine individual, group and family therapy. Wellness training, relapse prevention, social interaction skills, an education program and continuing care are also aspects of the program. The adolescent program heavily integrates family therapy into the treatment plan, with two to three sessions per week. Both of the adult IOP tracks consist of at least 20 hours of treatment per week. The duration of treatment is entirely dependent upon the progress and needs of the individual. The 12 steps are not incorporated into treatment, but clients may be referred to local NA/AA meetings if requested or deemed necessary.

The staff at CBHC consists of LSWs, LCSWs, CADCs, LPCs and MFTs.

In addition to substance abuse treatment services, CBHC also has a variety of other wellness and mental health services. Other offerings include access center services, a community support program, an employee assistance program, a family behavioral program and inpatient mental health services.

The Basics

In the 1950s, Eli Maritano opened his home to men with substance abuse issues, bringing Step 1, Inc. into existence in its initial form. When the client numbers proved to be too large for his home to accommodate, Maritano took over Antioch House, near the University of Nevada in Reno. This location has been in operation since 1993 and is ASAM Level 1 certified. It offers outpatient substance abuse counseling, peer-to-peer mentoring and sober living. Use of the 12-step model is encouraged but it is not the only modality used at Step 1. Many of the clients enter Step 1 directly from incarceration, homelessness or the court system but may come from other treatment centers in the area or be guided to Step 1 by concerned family members.

Accommodations and Amenities

Step 1 is a big residential home, with six bedrooms. It employs a no locked doors policy. Clients may not sequester themselves in their rooms but they can come and go from the grounds as they please. The maximum number of clients at Step 1 at any time is 20. All rooms are shared, with single beds and a small closet space for each client. All meals are included in cost of stay and shared family style. The men take turns doing house chores and have the option of helping to cook if interested.

Rules and Regulations

As detox is not available, client are expected to have completed detox before joining Step 1. While residing at Step 1, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings. They must also be employed or actively look for work. Once in the home, each client gets one individual meeting with their assigned counselor per week and is also expected to take part in at least one group session each week. While more are held, on weekly basis, clients must attend a minimum of one in-house meeting and any outside 12-step or counseling meetings do not count towards that goal. Once a month, clients have an extensive one-on-one session with their counselor to review their goals and check on their progress.

Step 1 is staffed by two certified counselors and an intern. There are also two residential managers always at the home.

Extras

Services at Step 1 are offered on a sliding scale basis and no client is turned away from care due to inability to pay. Outpatient counseling rates depend on the client’s enrollment in Medicaid or a health insurance plan that includes behavioral health coverage. Counselors are trained to help clients set up the appropriate insurance.

In Summary

Step 1, Inc. has a long tradition in doing what it does. While it may not offer intensive level treatment, the lower-level support and sober environment that it does offer those in need are quite accessible. For those in Reno whose sobriety could use a helping hand help is just a step away.

The Basics

The Council on Addiction Recovery Services, also known as CAReS, has been offering substance abuse services, in Olean, New York, and the surrounding areas since 1974. It has operated the Weston’s Manor, a residential treatment center for men since 1988 and opened Wendy’s House in 1997 for the treatment of women. For the last three decades CAReS has also offered an outpatient treatment option. CAReS utilizes parts of the 12-step modality but does not stick to it exclusively. CAReS also has offices in Salamanca, Machias and Gowanda, NY.

Treatment and Staff

Entry into the CAReS outpatient program begins with an intake appointment, followed by orientation into the program. Then an evaluation with a counselor takes place to assess the exact level of care each client needs and devise an individualized treatment schedule. Depending on the plan that is set up, clients may attend according to their needs and the level of their insurance coverage. Clients get to attend as often as they want and may also choose the sessions which they attend.

Group utilizes a CBT approach and is usually held two times each week and last a maximum of an hour and a half. Clients also have an individual hour-long appointment with their assigned counselor once a week. The average length of attendance at the CAReS outpatient program is six weeks. Once they have successfully completed this period, clients may reassess their treatment plan.

CAReS has about a dozen CADCs, eight of whom work out of Olean while two to three can be found at the Salamanca location, while the Machias and Gowanda ones are small offices thus staffed by one counselor at a time. Each counselor runs individual sessions as well as group sessions of four to 15 clients.

The Prevention department of the Council on Addiction Recovery Services is dedicated to providing quality classroom programs at local schools. These sessions utilize evidence-based curricula to provide students with age-appropriate information for protection from substance abuse.

Its residential services have been available for over 40 years while the outpatient option is also well-established. The services offered cover the basics of outpatient substance abuse treatment. The Basics

The Bridge to Recovery in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is a residential treatment facility that has been around since 1972. Programs offer individualized care that is holistic and trauma-informed that strives to get to the root of the addiction in a safe and supportive therapeutic setting.

Accommodations and Food

The Bridge to Recovery has four buildings on the property, which is on 100 acres near Nashville, Tennessee. A creek divides the grounds and in order to cross from one side to the next clients use the walking bridge, which is a recognizable symbol of the facility. The four buildings are where clients stay during their programming. The Lodge is where a majority of the therapeutic treatment takes place, and where the dining room, staff offices, work out room and rec room are located.

The women’s residence, Lorne’s Place, is a three-story home that can accommodate up to 15 women in six bedrooms. The men’s facility is a ranch style home, known as the Denski House, which can fit 12 men in total. Both the residences have two living rooms, and three full bathrooms. The bedrooms are shared and furnished with full beds, dressers and nightstands. Also on the grounds is an original log cabin, which has had a bit of reconstruction in 2014, and now holds alumni events and training.

Three meals a day are offered cafeteria style are healthy and well balanced. There are also snacks, like fruit, provided throughout the day.

The Bridge utilizes experiential, holistic and spiritual therapy methods in order to get to the root of the issues and treat the whole person, not just the addiction. Treatment is broken into three phases that range from two to 12 weeks. Each phase focuses on delving into past experiences and relationships and facing the addiction head on. During this time, clients have group therapy that has a ratio of three clients to once therapist, and discuss the 12 steps, attachment and co-dependence and healthy boundaries.

With a history dating back to 1882, Jersey City Medical Center is a full-service hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Basics

Founded in 1993 in Louisville, Kentucky, Hope Center first opened its doors as an emergency shelter for homeless adults. Throughout the years, Hope Center expanded to include a health clinic, social services, mental health support and transitional housing. In 1996, Hope Center opened a men’s residential treatment program, followed by a substance abuse rehab for women in 2002. Hope Center also provides a dual diagnosis program. Besides providing therapeutic services, Hope Center teaches basic life skills, so that residents can break the cycles of homelessness, rebuild new and fruitful lives, and become viable members of the community.

Accommodations and Food

Hope Center accommodates 200 male clients, with 134 newcomers in a separate building. There are 80 female clients. Men and women reside in gender-specific buildings. Upon arrival, clients can share a room with up to seven other roommates. Further down the road, residents in good standing share semi private rooms. Accommodations include twin beds, drawers and closet space. The 66 men, who have completed the first part of the program, live in the Privett Center, which includes semi-private furnished rooms.

Each building has a separate cafeteria. Clients are fed three hot meals a day, and coffee is included. Long-term clients work in the kitchen, with positions determined by professional culinary staff. Seasoned clients also provide support to newcomers, and help monitor the facilities, assuring that operations run smoothly.

Treatment and Staff

The program length at Hope Center is between six and nine months. An eight-bed non-medical licensed detox facility is available, with around-the-clock supervision. Clients requiring Suboxone or other Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) are referred to a medical facility. Narcotics are not allowed at Hope Center.

The Hope Center recovery program utilizes a 12-step approach, along with a Recovery Dynamics curriculum. There are three phases in the program. The first interval or motivation track includes motivation classes, and attendance at daily 12-step meetings, as well as working the first three steps. Motivation track clients reside in the shelter, and are moved to a primary facility, after they have completed all necessary requirements, and have indicated that they are committed to their recovery.

After the motivation track, which lasts between two weeks and a month, clients enter the first phase, which includes one-hour recovery dynamics classes held from 10 am to 3 pm Mondays through Fridays. In order to graduate, clients must participate in 28 classes, attend daily 12-step meetings, acquire a sponsor and complete all their steps. Additionally they must work at a position, which includes handling laundry, cooking in the kitchen, being a dorm supervisor, or handling clothing, or working as a security guard. Case management and individual therapy are also provided. The curfew is 10:30 pm seven days a week.

By the second phase, men move to the Privett Center. The second phase includes case management, individual therapy, classes, house and 12-step meetings. Clients receive family, legal, financial, vocational and disability supportive services. The curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. Residents have the option of working as assistant staff. They continue their recovery program, participate in relapse prevention groups, teach phase one classes, and after 90 days, are relieved of a curfew.

At Hope Center, a zero tolerance policy is enforced, and random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Clients are expected to be accountable for one another. Residents who relapse are removed from the premises to ensure the safety of the entire facility.

Hope Center offers a GED program from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As a homeless shelter, Hope Center holds up to 800 clients, at any given time. Transitional housing is offered to 44 men, and 40 women. The cost is based on a sliding scale fee.

Hope Center is a great option for the many homeless men and women who desperately need substance addiction treatment, but have no viable resources to get care. Not only does Hope Center offer their clients a second chance, but also they provide hands-on guidance so that clients learn to become fruitful members of society.

Founded in 2010 in Columbia, South Carolina by Michael D. Young, Seed of Hope House is a non-profit sober living home for men. Young, who has been clean and sober for 13 years, keeps his numbers small so that clients obtain the dual benefits of having room for personal growth while being in a nurturing setting. Besides being rooted in the 12 steps, Seed of Hope is open to clients who seek a more faith-based approach. The house’s name is inspired by a quote from the ancient Greek philosopher Aeschylus, “From a small seed a mighty trunk may grow!”

Accommodations and Amenities

Seed of Hope accommodates six men in single rooms, which include full-sized beds, TVs and dressers. Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. Additionally, residents must cook meals before 10 pm. Amenities include a washer, dryer, cable TV, paper and kitchen supplies. Staff provides around-the-clock supervision.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to arrival, clients must have already completed detox. Additionally, they undergo an interview with Young to ensure that Seed of Hope House is an appropriate fit. Clients must agree to participate in a spiritual program of recovery that he believes will help them stay clean and sober, as well as impact their lives for the better.

Requirements for house residents include attending a minimum of three weekly 12-step meetings, acquiring a sponsor or spiritual mentor, and performing household chores. For those seeking a more faith-based approach, attending church services counts towards the weekly meeting quota. The men must find work between 30 and 45 days after their arrival, so that they can pay their own rent. This rule is enforced so that clients learn accountability, and how to take care of themselves. Residents who don’t wish to comply with this rule are often told to find another sober living home.

The curfew is midnight seven days a week, unless clients work a third shift. If so, they must provide proof. Seed of Hope House practices a zero tolerance policy regarding residents who test positive on an alcohol or drug screening. Those who have relapsed must leave the premises immediately to ensure the safety of other clients. Depending on their willingness and a desire for a second chance, some clients are admitted back to the house, after a certain period of time. Once re-admitted, they must start all over, and are required to attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and adhere to a stricter set of rules until they progress in their recovery.

The Basics

Jefferson Alcohol and Drug Addiction Center (JADAC) is a a division of Seven Counties Services in Louisville, Kentucky. JADAC offers detox and short-term residential substance abuse treatment, as well as several outpatient programs. Since 1975 when the facility opened,  has served over 250,000 clients, families and pregnant women utilizing the 12-step approach to recovery.

Accommodations and Food

JADAC’s programs are all held in the same location, which from the outside resembles a community center or office building in the middle of a busy neighborhood. Inside, the space holds an 80-bed facility that is a mix of men and women, separated on opposite wings. Sleeping quarters are dorm style, with a couple shared bathrooms on each floor that the clients are responsible to maintain during their stay. The rooms are comfortable for several clients to share, but there is limited space for storage of personal items and clothes. There are shared dressers and closets, but clients should be mindful to not over pack. However, there are washers and dryers on site so keeping clothes clean is not an issue. Bedding is provided, but clients should bring their own towels and toiletries.

The building includes offices and classrooms where programming takes place, as well as a TV area where clients watch movies together. Clients can smoke in the designated outside areas. Three meals a day are provided on-site by a kitchen staff and served in the large dining room. The food is served cafeteria style with a variety of options daily. Coffee is also available.

Treatment and Staff

Clients coming to JADAC generally begin with the detox process, which can last for up to seven days. During this time clients are monitored 24 hours a day and have group and individual therapy, as well as being introduced to the 12-steps. For clients who don’t want to continue with treatment, the staff provides resources and referrals to AA or NA meeting locations.

For those who stay at the facility, the residential portion is short term, so between 15 to 30 days. These days consist of several group therapy sessions daily, one individual session per week, psycheducational lectures and outside AA or NA meetings. The staff encourages clients to build relationships within the community and obtain a sponsor while in treatment so once they leave support is available to them. The classes and group therapy cover relapse prevention and coping skills, while teaching clients about the disease of addiction and the effect it can have long term. There are also life skills and vocational training services, and aftercare planning, which may involve continuing on with the facilities outpatient treatment.

The staff consists of both medical and clinical care and is comprised of physicians, LPNs and LADC.

There is a family day where client’s family members can participate in group activities, and get acquainted with the program. Once that is completed, family is able to come to visit clients during designated visiting hours.

The Basics

House of Hope has been in operation in Salt Lake City, Utah since the 1950s. It is a non-profit organization which offers 12-step based inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment programs. What sets House of Hope apart is that it allows the clients’ children to reside with their mothers while in treatment. House of Hope also works with pregnant women, working women and mothers with up to three children (from six months up to eight years of age). Children who are not in school are cared for in the Hope Center for Children during the day while mothers are in treatment.

Accommodations and Food

House of Hope operates three different facilities. The main house is in Salt Lake City, as is the Hope Center for Children, while there is also a House of Hope house in Provo. Clients typically share rooms with one other person and their children. Each client gets her own bed while the children may sleep in cribs or share cots with siblings. While in House of Hope the women get help in applying for food stamps to cover the cost of their meals. If they are ineligible, House of Hope arranges to cover meal costs at no expense to clients.

Treatment and Staff

There is usually a three to five week waiting period to get into the residential treatment program. Treatment plans are individualized using behavioral, psychological and social aspects. Clients can bring their children in with them to therapy after the first month of treatment. Treatment includes CBT-based individual, family and couples’ therapy, substance abuse education, relapse prevention and aftercare as well as referrals to AA/NA groups.

Length of stay is also individualized, but the minimum is three months. The typical House of Hope client averages four to six months of residential treatment before stepping down to the outpatient program. Outpatient runs six hours, five days a week to begin with and may continue to diminish down to down to thee hours only twice weekly. Group is held throughout the day. The outpatient program is also available to clients not entering through the residential one.

House of Hope staff includes three Master’s-level adult therapists, three children’s therapists and four individual case managers, who are LCSWs, as well as two on-site house managers.

During the first 30 to 45 days, clients are expected to attend  group therapy throughout the day covering topics like life skills, relapse prevention, problem solving, anger management, decision-making and identifying emotions. As a Christian-based program, all sessions are based on the teachings of scripture and residents are required to attend church twice a week. Residents must also attend on-site 12-step meetings every night from 6 to 7 pm. Individual therapy is offered on an as-needed basis.

In order to live at any of the homes or take part in the Open Arms House of Hope recovery program, clients must remain abstinent from alcohol and drugs and be willing participants in the recovery process. After the first 30 to 45 days, each client gets a progress report and if they’re ready, are encouraged to start attending school or get a job while living in the facilities.

Staff consists of three co-directors, one of which is pastor and a CADC, while the other two are spiritual advisors.

Extras

Programs are affordable and community-focused, with referrals and support available for both early and later periods of recovery. These include GED completion, job training and medical care.

In Summary

In all, Open Arms House of Hope is a nice combination of substance abuse treatment and sober living, with the flexibility to start working or attending school while still in the program. For those of the Christian faith, this program is a great way to connect (or reconnect) with spirituality. While those in need of a more medically-focused or non-denominational program will not find what they need here, for their target demographic, Open Arms House of Hope is a worthy consideration for both treatment and sober living.

The Basics

Hudson Hospital and Clinic was founded in 1953 in Hudson, Wisconsin, a small town in the northwestern region of the state. The facility offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

Hudson’s intake process begins with an in-person assessment with one of facility’s counselors. During this meeting, the counselor evaluates whether the client would be a good fit for treatment here. Clients who need a higher level of care than what’s offered are referred to outside detox or residential programs in the area.

Hudson’s IOP lasts for eight weeks and meets for a total of 22 sessions. The program consists of both group and individual therapy. Groups are offered three days a week in the evening and mornings. The sessions last for two and half hours and have on average around eight clients and one counselor. The groups cover a variety of topics including relapse prevention and implement CBT-based therapy. Individual meetings are scheduled based on the needs of each person. Counselors also use the concepts from the 12 steps in meetings if they think it would help address a client’s particular circumstances.

Hudson offers a group lecture every Wednesday. Family members are encouraged to attend this lecture, and lecture topics include family systems, communication, the 12 steps, stress management, spirituality and life enhancement. Clients in the IOP also have the option to attend a multi-family group session twice while in the program. These meetings are led by a counselor and include groups of different families and client members who share with each other and learn about substance abuse and co-dependency issues.

The facility does not offer dual diagnosis support and refers client with potential co-occurring disorders to outside mental health treatment facility. The counselors at Hudson are CASACs and LSWs.

Extras

The facility also offers an outpatient program designed for adolescents. This treatment program is a one-day, seven-hour program that helps educate underage drug and alcohol abusers. The program covers alcohol and drug education, stress management and making healthy choices.

Additionally, Hudson has a continuing care aftercare program for clients who have completed the IOP. This program offers men’s and women’s groups twice a week. The groups last for two hours and cover a variety of topics including relationships, family recovery, goal setting, relapse prevention, anger management, co-dependency and spirituality.

In Summary

Hudson Hospital and Clinic’s substance abuse treatment programs offer intensive and comprehensive treatment for adult and adolescent clients. Hudson’s weekly lecture and multi-family groups are a perk because they provide a greater level of support and education for family members of clients and involve them directly in the client’s treatment. Also, the small size of the groups allows counselors and clients to develop an individual relationship while the client is in treatment.
