The Basics
Founded in 2013 by psychologists Dr. Barry Reiman and Dr. Rick Harris, Satori Waters offers two treatment locations in South Florida—one in Delray Beach and the other in Ft. Lauderdale. Its commitment to employing the most cutting-edge evidence-based treatment methods makes Satori Waters a standout in the crowded south Florida recovery community. Its name is derived from the Japanese verb satoru—meaning the “sudden enlightenment,” Satori provides the community with residential and outpatient programs using both traditional and alternative therapeutic methods.
Satori Waters’ COO and Co-founder, Dr. Barry Reiman, has been in recovery for nearly two decades. In the spirit of sharing his recovery with others, Reiman received his doctorate in psychology and ran a private practice for fifteen years and acted as head of a recovery facility in Southwest Florida before opening Satori, a comprehensive and growing recovery program.
Treatment and Staff
Satori’s 45-day inpatient program is considered Phase One of treatment and—since most clients continue treatment with the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)—it is considered Phase Two. However, Satori accepts clients with diverse recovery and addiction backgrounds, so some clients in the IOP have completed residential treatment elsewhere or are starting their recovery journey in Satori’s IOP.
Following an initial assessment, clinicians craft a customized treatment plan that consists of of group and individual therapy. Most clients attend the IOP for 6-8 weeks and commit to up to twelve hours of therapy each week. Each location treats approximately 30 to 40 clients at one time. Groups don’t exceed ten participants and case managers limit their case-load to three clients, giving them ample time to track their client’s progress, modify their individualized plans and anticipate their needs. Sessions are available both during the day and in the evenings. Groups are led by a psychologist and typically focus on withdrawal symptoms, relapse prevention and life skills.
Satori’s treatment implements techniques from the Stages of Change model of recovery by providing residents with highly individualized treatment plans made up of many modalities and approaches. Satori offers dual-diagnosis support and employs CBT, DBT, neurofeedback, Hypnosis, EMDR and Auricular therapy. In addition, Satori uses “interactive journaling” to assist with progressive and goal-oriented change, and there is a specific program for trauma survivors as well as specialized gender-specific groups. Satori provides genetic testing for clients in order to better match effective medications and works with nutraceuticals by Dr. Daniel Amen.
Additionally, Satori incorporates principles and an abbreviated version of the 12 steps, which requires clients to admit they have problem, commit to developing a relationship with a higher power, determine their part in what has gone wrong, work on fixing their mistakes, and to helping others to recover once their own lives are healthy and grounded in sobriety.
At Satori each client has daily contact with his or her case manager. All group therapy leaders and clinicians have Master’s-level credentials and include LCSWs and MFTs and 90% of staff members are in long-term recovery. Satori medical director is Dr. Richard Seely, who has also worked with high profile clients in the NFL and NBA.
Extras
Satori offers clients access to a massage therapist and chiropractor. In December 2015, Satori plans to expand facilities, opening a 50-bed detox facility. Currently family therapy is offered weekly, and efforts are being made to grow the Family Program into a Friday through Sunday Family Weekend in which clients and loved ones are united for an assortment of workshops and sessions to aid in their loved one’s recovery and ensuring a supportive sober environment is available for clients post recovery.
After completing Satori’s IOP, clients may step-down to weekly group therapy and/or attend monthly Alumni Meetings. Referrals are given to area sober living and transitional housing.
In Summary
Satori Waters prides itself on catering to each client’s unique experience, crafting an evidence-based treatment plan to change their relationship with alcohol and drugs. With comprehensive treatment tracks (PHP, IOP and—coming this winter—detox), the resources are available to meet each client wherever he or she is on the recovery spectrum. The program is committed to helping patients with limited resources and will negotiate cost accordingly.
