 Satori WatersThe Basics

Derived from the Japanese verb satoru—meaning “sudden enlightenment and a state of consciousness attained by intuitive illumination,” Satori Waters is a network of residential recovery and outpatient treatment facilities in South Florida founded in 2013 by two psychologists—Dr. Barry Reiman and Dr. Rick Harris. Dr. Reiman has been in recovery for nearly two decades. After receiving his doctorate in psychology, he worked in private practice for fifteen years then ran a recovery facility in Southwest Florida.

With three inpatient treatment locations—one in Delray Beach and two in Ft. Lauderdale—Satori Waters’ ocean-side locations combined with a strong commitment to incorporating the most cutting-edge evidence-based treatment methods makes this a standout choice for recovery in the crowded South Florida rehab community.

Accommodations and Food

Residents are housed in beach-side apartment complexes and then transported to one of two clinic locations where they spend their days in individual and group therapy. Since Florida law dictates that a rehab facility only call itself inpatient if residents receive treatment and sleep on the same property, Satori Waters is officially categorized as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), though all the amenities and structure of a traditional inpatient program are available.

Each location houses 25 to 27 residents in upscale double-occupancy two and three bedroom apartment units. Each unit is sunny and comfortably furnished, with open-air hallways overlooking a communal pool. Residents are given a grocery card and are responsible for shopping for and preparing their own breakfasts and dinners in their apartment kitchen. A dietitian visits the residents each weekend to teach nutrition classes and to offer help in meal planning. Weekday lunches are catered at the treatment center. Clients are encouraged to make daily visits to the beach and the on-site pool for relaxation and exercise.

Treatment and Staff

Satori refers to its 45-day residential program as Phase One of treatment and—since most clients continue treatment with the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)—this is referred to as Phase Two. Upon entering the program residents cannot have electronics—including phones—for seven days. After this initial ‘blackout’ phase, case managers may arrange phone and email privileges based on the client’s needs. Visitors are also permitted after the seven-day ‘blackout’ period, but they much be approved by a clinician.

A typical day in Phase One begins at 8:30 am when residents are taken by van from their apartment to the treatment center. They then participate in individual and group therapy from 9 am to 4:30 pm, with a short noon-time break for lunch. Following a day of treatment, clients are encouraged to take a walk on the beach or exercise at LA Fitness (transportation is provided). Clients prepare their own dinner in their apartment kitchen and can take advantage of transportation to nearby community 12-step meetings. At 9 pm there is a meditation session on the beach followed by lights out at 11:30 pm.

Satori’s treatment implements techniques from the Stages of Change model of recovery by providing residents with highly individualized treatment plans made up of many modalities and approaches. Satori offers dual-diagnosis support and employs CBT, DBT, neurofeedback, Hypnosis, EMDR and Auricular therapy. In addition, Satori uses “interactive journaling” to assist with progressive and goal-oriented change, and there is a specific program for trauma survivors as well as specialized gender-specific groups. Satori provides genetic testing for clients in order to better match effective medications and works with nutraceuticals by Dr. Daniel Amen.

After completing the inpatient program, many clients attend Satori’s outpatient program for six to eight weeks. After, they may step-down to weekly group therapy and/or attend monthly Alumni Meetings.

At Satori each client has daily contact with his or her case manager. All group therapy leaders and clinicians have Master’s-level credentials and include LCSWs and MFTs and 90% of staff members are in long-term recovery. Satori medical director is Dr. Richard Seely, who has also worked with high profile clients in the NFL and NBA.

Extras

Apartment complexes also have on-site gyms, a theatre-room, tennis courts, a pool table and a café for recreation and socialization during down time. In addition to the on-site workout equipment, clients are given membership to the local LA Fitness.

Satori offers residents yoga twice a week, art therapy and Equine therapy twice a month, and access to a massage therapist and chiropractor. On weekends, residents can receive transportation to attend church and are then taken on expeditions throughout South Florida—including golfing, boating, and attending sporting and cultural events.

In December 2015 Satori plans to open a 50-bed detox facility and is currently expanding the Family Program into a Friday through Sunday Family weekend which unites residents with their loved ones for an assortment of workshops and sessions to aid in recovery. Clients outside of the Ft. Lauderdale area may find recovery assistance at one of the Satori affiliates in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

In Summary

Satori Waters prides itself on its ability to tailor treatment to each client’s unique experience of addiction and craft an evidence-based recovery plan to change it. The price tag is no joke, but with several tracks of treatment (PHP, IOP and—coming soon—Detox), the resources are available to meet each client wherever he or she is on the recovery spectrum. Satori Waters’ family program, Alumni groups and referrals to transitional housing ensure that clients have a continuum of support in building and maintaining their new sober lives.
