The Basics
The Hacienda Valdez is The Ranch Recovery Centers‘ inpatient facility for women located in Desert Hot Springs, California—a small city 90 miles east of Los Angeles known for its spas and proximity to Palm Springs.
The Ranch Recovery Center is a non-profit, CARF-accredited facility that has been treating men at the nearby “Ranch” since 1972. In 1991, The Hacienda expanded their services to include treatment for women. The Hacienda also features three detox beds and a transitional living house for those who have successfully completed the inpatient program.
Accommodations and Food
The sunny Spanish style facility is found on a residential street surrounded by dessert landscapes and accommodates approximately twenty women. Residents have a roommate for their stay and live and receive treatment in the well-appointed facility surrounded by groomed gardens with water features and a play ground for visiting children.
Residents are not permitted cell phones until they have been in treatment for two weeks, and then the staff must approve use. A payphone is available, as are coin-operated washers and dryers for laundry. Residents go on weekly shopping trips to a nearby grocery store for the week’s provisions. Each woman is responsible for providing and preparing her own meals.
Treatment and Staff
Most stays at The Hacienda Valdez average 30 to 60 days. Each day features a “Primary Group” meeting in which a small group meets with a counselor for more personal attention. Topics addressed in group therapy include parenting, anger-management and relapse prevention. The counselors and staff also make sure each resident becomes increasingly self-sufficient by teaching life skills and engaging them in planning their next steps with school and employment. Residents also receive individual therapy twice a week. Each counselor specializes in specific areas of treatment and are assigned residents who may especially benefit from their expertise. Visiting specialists to the facility conduct workshops on topics including job search and managing HIV.
On a typical day, clients rise at 6 am, have meditation at 7:30 am and then perform “ranch projects” which include cleaning their room and performing chores and tasks around The Hacienda such as gardening. At 10 am there is a mandatory house meeting where the Resident Council members (longer-term residents) help the newer members acclimate, followed by group therapy. After a lunch break, groups continue until 4 pm when they break for dinner, then attend an evening house meeting followed by off-site 12-step meetings (transportation is provided).
After significant progress, residents may request weekend passes to leave the facility—these off-campus trips must be approved by the staff to ensure the visits are to recovery-supportive environments.
Some Hacienda staff reside on-site with the clients to provide around-the-clock support. Primarily made of up of LADCs, the staff is all female. The Hacienda has its own medical director and an urgent care facility and hospital are within a mile.
Extras
Upon completion of inpatient treatment, residents may apply for The Hacienda’s transitional living house. Situated on the same property, this secluded, private home allows residents to live without supervision (with the exception of signing in and out each day) while still having access to The Hacienda’s support service.
The Hacienda Valdez also has on-site workout equipment, a volley ball court and swimming pool and many residents enjoy taking nature walks on the property. The Hacienda partners with Ranch Recovery’s men’s treatment center for family evenings once a week and an occasional family weekend in which family members can attend workshops on recovery.
In Summary
The Hacienda Valdez offers an affordable, comfortable, and comprehensive inpatient experience in a pleasant desert setting. What sets it apart from other rehabs in SoCal is a communal spirit in tandem with structure, encouraging residents to take ownership of daily routines and rehab lifestyle as they heal. By offering insight, advice and accountability to fellows with less time in recovery, residents improve their interpersonal skills, autonomy and responsibility, thereby easing their transition into life after treatment.
