The Basics

The New Jersey-based behavioral health network Sunspire Health currently operates licensed residential treatment centers in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas. Sunspire Health: Hilton Head is located in the resort town of Hilton Head, South Carolina, on an island 20 miles northeast of Savannah, Georgia. The facility provides a full continuum of care, including detox, residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The Sunspire Hilton Head location also offers dual diagnosis support and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in addition to a specialized track for LGBT clients.

Treatment and Staff

After residential treatment, Hilton Head clients who live locally may step down to PHP or IOP. The PHP clients have the same schedule as residential clients, with about six hours a day of therapy five to seven days a week. IOP clients typically come in three times a week for three-hour groups and one individual session a month. PHP usually lasts between two and four weeks, with the IOP phase lasting around two months. The exact length of treatment is dependent each client’s individualized plan.

Clients attend group therapy, psychoeducational sessions and individual therapy. Groups focus on resolving trauma, anger management, coping skills and relapse prevention. Lectures educate clients about the physical impact of addiction and the cycle of addictive behavior. Specialized groups are available for LGBT clients. Counselors use CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques. In these phases, clients continue to have access to the holistic therapies on-site and participate in educational workshops. Clients on medication continue to be monitored and assessed by a medical doctor and psychiatrist. The 12-step approach is not specifically incorporated into the program but clients are encouraged to attend meetings in the community.

The treatment team at Hilton Head includes Board Certified psychiatrists, nurses and doctoral and Master’s-level clinicians with significant experience in addiction and mental health treatment. There are also fitness and meditation coaches, massage therapists, techs and a nutritionist on staff.

Outpatient clients have access to the facility’s on-site exercise room, pool, massage therapy, yoga and Tai Chi classes.
