The Basics
Alexander’s House was founded by the parents of Alexander Reisinger, a young man who lost his life to addiction at the age of 23. A men’s only transitional sober living facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Alexander’s House is a 12-step oriented program available to adult men over the age of 18 who have recently completely residential treatment.
Accommodations and Amenities
The large, two-story home, where up to six clients can reside, features elegant, modern decor, new appliances and spacious accommodations. There are both private and semi-private rooms with either a queen or two full beds and shared bathrooms. There is a living room with a fireplace and flat screen TV with cable as well as Wifi throughout the house, a game room and an exercise area with a treadmill and Crosstrainer.
Clients are permitted to bring their personal vehicle, though some transportation is provided and the facility is near a bus stop.
The house comes complete with a dining room and fully stocked kitchen. A chef designs gourmet menus for the clients and teaches them how to prepare meals, which they take turns doing for the house. There are also healthy snacks available at all times.
Rules and Regulations
Incoming residents are required to have gone through an inpatient program and be already sober. Daily chores are completed on a revolving schedule and each individual is responsible for keeping the house clean and organized. There are daily AA meetings along with house and peer counseling sessions. Additionally, there are lectures, classes and skills training that includes resume building and job prep. Clients must obtain a job, secure volunteer work or enroll in classes while living at Alexander’s House.
Clients learn to integrate the 12-step philosophy into everyday life. They also learn new coping skills, relapse prevention techniques and how to identify triggers. The program places an emphasis on learning how to build healthier relationships with family and loved ones.
For clients who enter into the program with an existing dual diagnosis, there is a physician on staff who is able to monitor medications.
The facility is operated by addiction specialists who are CADCs along with peer counselors and 24-hour residential staff, all of whom are sober.
In Summary
Alexander’s House is a safe sober living facility that aims to provide young men with the tools to transition out of a structured environment and eventually learn to live on their own terms without the crutch of drugs and alcohol. With a 12-step emphasis, plenty of structured, educational activities and comfortable accommodations, men in the area would do well to consider this resource for early recovery.
