Sunspire Health: Heartland Outpatient

The Basics

The behavioral health network Sunspire Health is headquartered in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and currently includes licensed residential treatment centers in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas. The Heartland location is in the small town of Gilman, Illinois, about an hour and a half south of Chicago. It provides a full continuum of care; including detox, residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Heartland also offers dual diagnosis support for clients with co-occurring mental health disorders, as well as support for those with eating disorders, gambling, technology and sexual addictions.

Treatment and Staff

The outpatient programs at Heartland are exclusively offered to those who have completed another Sunspire program. Residential care usually lasts between one and three months and after treatment, clients who live locally may step down to PHP or IOP. The exact length of treatment is dependent on the client’s individualized plan. The PHP clients have the same schedule as residential, with six to eight hours a day of therapy up to seven days a week. IOP clients typically come in three times a week for three-hour groups and one individual session a month. In these phases, clients continue to have access to the holistic therapies on-site and participate in psychoeducational workshops. Clients on medication continue to be monitored and assessed by a psychiatrist.

All outpatient clients participate in group and individual therapy and educational sessions. Group discussions focus on resolving trauma, anger management, coping skills and relapse prevention. Lectures educate clients about the physical impact of addiction and the cycle of addictive behavior. Counselors are trained in CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings in the community.

Tom Delegatto serves as the Executive Director and leads the team at Sunspire Health Heartland. He is a CADC and has over 25 years of experience in the addiction treatment field. The rest of the team includes Board Certified psychiatrists, nurses, Master’s-level clinicians and support staff.

Extras

Sober living referrals in the community may be made for clients whose recovery may be jeopardized by their living environment.

All clients have access to an on-site exercise room, massage therapy rooms and yoga classes.
