The Basics
Founded in 1979, New Directions, Inc. is a non-profit behavioral health facility in Enfield, Connecticut that provides outpatient treatment for addiction and mental illness. Programs are open to both court-ordered and self-referred clients in a range of intensities.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients go through an initial intake and assessment process so that staff may develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs. The main track is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which meets three four times a week for three hours. Morning, afternoon and evening sessions are available.
Treatment works within the structure of group and individual therapy, is trauma-informed (TIC) and evidence-based. Groups address addiction education, relapse prevention, parenting classes and gender-specific anger management. Family therapy is also available upon request. While 12-step participation is not required, clients are encouraged to attend off-site meetings. Additional support and medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Staff is comprised of LADCs, LCSWs, psychologists, MSWs and other Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
Once clients have completed primary care, aftercare is available in the form of stepped-down treatment that meets once a week.
Other services available include a county-wide program called the Windsor Locks Wellness Coalition (formerly SAPAC), founded in 2005, which works with state and local agencies to prevent underage drinking and educate the community about addiction as a public health issue. It also has a a first-offense DWI program.
In Summary
In all, New Directions, Inc. is a community-focused program with a straight-forward approach to treating addiction and co-occurring disorders. It’s evidence-based practices, medication management and aftercare services make a well-rounded program that is flexible and affordable. For those in search of outpatient addiction treatment in the area, New Directions, Inc. is worth considering.
