The Basics
With a number of programs available for San Francisco residents, Walden House was founded in 1969 in Haight-Ashbury as an adolescent homeless and runaway shelter. The facility later combined with Haight Ashbury Free Clinics in 2011 to form HealthRIGHT 360. In addition to its outpatient services, Walden House/HealthRIGHT 360 also offers 68 different residential treatment programs for addiction and co-occurring disorders throughout California.
Accommodations and Food
Because Walden House/HealthRIGHT 360 refers to a broad array of programs throughout the state, specific accommodations of each location may vary slightly. For example, Walden House/HealthRIGHT 360 has a men’s facility in San Francisco designed to serve clients coming out of the criminal justice system. Residents of this facility share bedrooms with anywhere from one to 10 other clients; however, most rooms only house four to six. Basic amenities, such as dressers and shared closet space, are also provided. Common areas include a living room with a TV and a full-kitchen. While the program includes three meals a day prepared by the food service department, residents are expected to help serve meals and clean up afterwards.
Other locations in San Francisco include a 64-bed home for single women, facilities for women with children, detox and dual diagnosis facilities and other men’s homes. Residential programs are also available in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Ventura counties.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial intake, clients work with staff members to develop individualized treatment plans. San Francisco area residents in need of non-medical detox can do so at the organization’s social detox facility. For more severe cases, referrals for medical detox are available.
While the specific programs at each location may vary, all programs work within the structure of individual, group and family therapy. Treatment is rooted in evidence-based practices, such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), and tailored to be trauma-informed as well as age, gender and culturally-appropriate. Residents are also expected to work a 12-step program or another appropriate self-help group.
For clients with co-occurring disorders, additional psychiatric support as well as medication management is also available. For clients who are opiate-addicted, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Suboxone is offered. While staff members vary from location to location, it typically includes CADCs, LCSWs, LPCs, case managers and other Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
Additional services include life and job skills classes, such as computer training, GED assistance and resume building. And for clients who have competed primary care, standalone case management and job placement services are available.
Aftercare is offered in the form of outpatient therapy at a stepped-down rate, as are referrals for further medical help for HIV/AIDS and/or additional healthcare, and alums can also get placement in sober living homes.
Finally, Walden House offers a wide range of outpatient services at many of its locations, with special programs for African-Americans, parolees and transgender clientele.
In Summary
In all, Walden House/HealthRIGHT 360 is an extremely diverse and expansive California-based organization with a variety of programs for those struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Treatment is individualized and offers support at all stages of early recovery, with a number of specialized options available. For California residents looking for affordable care, Walden House/HealthRIGHT 360 is likely to have a program to suit their needs.
