The Basics
Set upon 250 acres of rural Oklahoma woodlands, Narconon Arrowhead is the flagship rehabilitation center of the long-running Narconon organization and offers long-term residential substance abuse treatment. The massive facility is technically located in Canadian, Oklahoma, but is secluded and bordered by Lake Eufaula and a state park. Narconon, which was founded in 1971, is an international organization with multiple facilities in the United States and across the globe. The organization is well known for both its non-traditional treatment methods and affiliation with the Church of Scientology.
Accommodations and Food
As befitting the organization’s main location, Narconon Arrowhead is nothing if not expansive. Currently designed to accommodate 118 residents at a time, the facility has previously housed 250 clients. Clients can expect a modern looking facility, set in a lush natural setting with large common areas, a sauna and treadmill room and a church for Sunday services. Clients typically share a room with one other person in rooms that are intended to mirror an upscale hotel aesthetic and are furnished with twin beds, basic necessities and private bathrooms. For an additional cost, clients can have their own rooms deemed “executive suites” for the duration of their program, which typically lasts two months. All meals are provided on-site, cafeteria style and clients eat together in the facility’s dining room.
Treatment and Staff
A major component of the Narconon program is the detox process, which—though described as a “medical” detox—incorporates two unconventional components: the use of vitamins and extended time spent in the facility sauna, as Narconon endorses the belief that clients need to sweat out vestiges of drug and alcohol use. This process typically extends longer than a conventional detox and is a cornerstone of the Narconon program.
While daily exercise and sauna time remain a staple throughout their time at the facility, clients also spend their time attending “therapeutic training routines” courses and daily classes. While the facility does employ a medical doctor and LADCs, clients should not expect traditional talk therapy, but rather classes such as a “personal values” course, a “changing conditions in life” class and an “ups and downs in life” course, all based on the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.
As should be clear from even a tertiary understanding of the program, Narconon Arrowhead does not follow the disease model of addiction and 12-step recovery is not discussed at the facility. Additionally, there is no dual diagnosis component or acknowledgement of co-occurring disorders.
Extras
Narconon Arrowhead offers a standard aftercare program in the form of regular communication with staff members typically for two years after a client’s completion of the inpatient program. Clients can also expect to extend their stay well beyond the average two-month timeline based on their personal progress and needs.
In Summary
While Narconon Arrowhead’s expansive, modern facility set in the Oklahoman brush may mirror a typical luxury inpatient facility, potential clients looking for the framework of a conventional rehab experience should note that Narconon Arrowhead does not offer the standard features of modern recovery, such as a 12-step foundation and a dual diagnosis component. Instead, Narconon Arrowhead places an emphasis on vitamin and sauna-based detox practices combined with educational classes.
