Horizon Services Chrysalis HouseThe Basics

For over 40 years, Horizon Services has been providing low-income residents of northern California with residential and transitional substance abuse treatment. It currently operates six facilities, including Chrysalis House, a long-term residential treatment program for women with alcoholism, addiction issues and co-occurring disorders. Chrysalis House opened in 1980 and is located in Oakland, the largest city in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area region.

Accommodations and Food

Chrysalis House is located in a Victorian-style home and can accommodate up to 16 women at a time. Residents have roommates and shared bathrooms. The facility is non-smoking and features a yard for gathering and recreation.

Cell phones and computers aren’t permitted, but there is a living room with a TV for evening viewing. As part of their life skills training, residents prepare their own food and make meal plans and cycle through house chore rotations.

Treatment and Staff

Residents must be clean for 72 hours before entering Chrysalis House. The program is six months long, and the first 45 days of treatment are a resident’s “acclimation” period. During this time, they cannot have any visitors (except their young children) or leave the facility for recreational trips.

Each resident’s treatment plan includes a daily schedule of group and individual therapy and life skills classes. The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists such as MFTs and LADC addiction counselors. Therapy uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Seeking Safety and the 12-step framework. Residents are required to attend at least three AA or NA meetings each week, including several facilitated on-site or nearby meetings in the community.

The treatment team is experienced with dual diagnosis, and clients needing additional medical treatment and/or therapy and medication for mental health disorders are transported to area physicians and psychiatrists.

Extras

After the acclimation period, residents can apply to have visitors on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. As they near the end of their stay, Chrysalis provides case management to help them locate housing and additional treatment. Some residents may find part-time work while they’re in the later stages of treatment.

Horizon Services nurtures a robust alumni organization that provides on-going support to new graduates and those with decades in recovery. It invites alumni to visit Chrysalis House and its other facilities to motivate residents.

In Summary

Horizon Services’ Chrysalis House has been providing long-term residential treatment women with co-occurring disorders for over 30 years. Its treatment activities are tailored to address the shame and traumas specific to many women who struggle with  substance abuse. The length of the program enables women to learn substantial life skills and coping mechanisms to give them a fresh start in recovery.
