Tony Rice CenterThe Basics

The Tony Rice Center is a non-profit residential treatment facility for men suffering from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Their belief is that dual diagnosis support is vital to treating recovering alcoholics and addicts, with the idea that addiction and co-occurring disorders often go hand in hand. Located about an hour south of Nashville, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the facility provides inpatient care, intervention services, an outpatient program, aftercare and sober living for graduates of their program. The Tony Rice Center implements a 12-step based approach, and works hand in hand with the Board of Probation and Parole in assisting criminal justice clients.

Accommodations and Food

Nestled on a sprawling lawn, the Tony Rice Center accommodates 28 men inside a cozy country house with gabled roofs and a front porch complete with rocking chairs. Clients are lodged in triple-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds, dressers and nightstands.

A chef, who has been with the facility for more than six years, serves lunch and dinner, and prepares the breakfast menu. Support kitchen staff prepares the first meal of the day. Clients are served three healthy meals, cafeteria style inside a dining room. Staff lives on the premises.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients participate in a comprehensive assessment with staff, and receive individualized treatment plans. The program length is four months. At Tony Rice Center, evidence-based treatment modalities are used, including CBT and rational emotive therapy (RET), along with a 12-step based approach so that residents can work on recovery as a long term commitment.

Treatment includes individual and group therapy, psychoeducational classes, a daily life skills program, medication management (if appropriate) and attendance at 12-step meetings. Group topics include relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, the effect of substance addiction on the brain and 12-step facilitation. Clients meet with a visiting licensed professional counselor, who determines if they are candidates for medication management. If so, they are provided with appropriate mental health referrals.

A typical daily schedule includes getting up at 5:30 am, followed by breakfast at 6 am, followed by household chores, the latter designed to teach basic life skills. At 6:45 am, clients participate in morning meditation, followed by two successive groups between 7:30 am and 10:30 am. After a ten-minute break, clients attend class at 10:40 am. Noon is lunch. In the afternoon, some residents participate in independent study, based on their treatment plan, or attend class. After class, there is more free time and dinner is served at 4:30 pm. At 6:30 pm, residents attend group, and at 7:30 pm, they go to a 12-step meeting. When the weather permits, meetings are held outside, around a lit bonfire. On Thursday and Friday evenings, they attend meetings off the premises. During the intensive part of the program, transportation is provided. Staff escorts clients to and from outside gatherings.

After 60 days, the men should complete their fourth step inventory. If stable, they are allowed to step down, and participate in the work program, which provides vocational guidance, as well as teaches them the practical skills necessary to obtain employment. Besides work, they still attend meetings, and groups, based on their treatment plans. The outpatient program includes two weekly group sessions and attendance at three weekly 12-step meetings. Group topics parallel those found in the inpatient program.

Staff includes LPCs and an admissions coordinator.

Extras

Aftercare is held in three local counties, and includes one weekly group session which focuses on relapse prevention. The session is scheduled from 9:30 am to 11 am during the week.

The sober living home is for graduates of the program. Men are required to attend five weekly 12-step meetings, participate in some group sessions at the main facility and work full time jobs. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

In Summary

The Tony Rice Center boasts a caring, and supportive staff that truly cares about their clients’ well being. The men receive ample one on one time with their therapists. The 12-step focus of the program, along with the job training is highly comprehensive. Also former clients rave about the food, saying that the meals are excellent. But what’s especially cool about the Tony Rice Center is that they focus on providing dual diagnosis support, so men with co-occurring disorders will find that this drug rehab in the South is probably a great fit.
