The Basics
Established in 2007 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Steps to Solutions provides sober living for men and women. The name is derived from founder Peter McCarthy’s struggles in recovery. He has experienced many challenges and personal tragedies, including the loss of his father, homelessness, divorce, bankruptcy and the passing of loved ones from addiction. He persevered, thanks to his faith in the 12 steps. Based on his own personal experience, he is determined to help clients as they undergo their own early recovery journeys.
Accommodations and Amenities
Steps to Solutions accommodates a total of about 97 residents in eight gender-specific houses located in the Boston suburbs of Fall River, Dorchester, Roxbury and Lynn. There are four houses for men, and four for women. The houses all have unique exteriors. One house in Lynn is a spacious white Cape Cod home, while a residence in Dorchester is an old imposing, three-story townhome with outdoor decks on every floor. Clients are accommodated in furnished double or triple-occupancy rooms. Some singles are available for an additional cost.
Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include security cameras and on-site laundry facilities. Each house participates in a cable plan, and interested residents are allowed to pitch in for cable and Wi-Fi, for an extra fee. In addition to the monthly rent, a personal TV is an extra $10, and a personal air conditioner is $50. House managers live on the premises. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas, and smokers must use ashtrays.
Rules and Regulations
Potential applicants must complete an application, followed by an interview to ensure that one of the Steps to Solutions homes is a good fit. Clients must have already undergone detox, if necessary. Upon acceptance, clients must commit and pay up front for a two-month stay.
Requirements include attending one weekly house meeting, going to three weekly AA/NA meetings, performing household chores and undergoing three mandatory weekly drug and alcohol screenings, which are conducted at random times, or if staff suspects unusual behavior. Clients must acquire and actively maintain a working relationship with a sponsor, as well as work their steps. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Extras
Other services provided besides housing include counseling, the services of a visiting nurse practitioner, and Narcan training.
Steps to Solutions is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Sober Housing (MASH), which demands high standards from its affiliates.
