The Basics
For over 40 years, Horizon Services has been providing residential treatment and transitional care for low-income residents of northern California. It currently operates six facilities, including Cronin House, an inpatient program for men and women with co-occurring disorders. Cronin House opened in 1981 and is located in Hayward, a large city in the East Bay region of San Francisco Bay.
Accommodations and Food
Cronin House is situated in a treatment facility in suburban area with ample yard space for recreation. Men and women reside in separate wings in the space, which houses up to 34 residents at a time. The yard features a basketball and volleyball court and a track for running.
Cell phone and computers aren’t permitted, but residents can watch TV and movies in the facility’s common area from 8:30pm to 11pm on evenings and weekends. Cronin House strives to make the décor and atmosphere home-like, and standard American fare is prepared by Cronin House’s kitchen staff.
Treatment and Staff
Residents stay at Cronin House for 60 to 90 days. Treatment activities are typically scheduled from 8:30am to 2pm, with afternoons and evenings for homework, chores and recreation. For the first 21 days of treatment, residents may not leave the facility (except for medical appointments) or have visitors. During this time, they focus on their treatment plan, which includes daily group and individual therapy and psychoeducation classes. After the stabilization period, they can partake in off-site activities and invite family to visit.
The treatment team has plenty of Master’s-level therapists including MFTs and LCSWs and addiction counselors with the LADC credential. Therapy incorporates CBT and Seeking Safety. Residents are also required to attend six weekly 12-step meetings nearby or on-site.
Residents needing additional mental health treatment and medication are transported to visit their off-site psychiatrist, either by a staff or family member. Cronin House regularly invites alumni and others thriving in recovery to share their stories with the residents.
Extras
After the stabilization period, residents can have family members visit on Sundays. As residents near the end of their treatment plan, Cronin House provides case management services and referrals to local outpatient programs.
In Summary
Horizon Services’ Cronin House has been providing residential treatment for men and women with co-occurring disorders for over 30 years. Its clinicians are experienced treating trauma and mental health disorders alongside addiction, and the consistent setting gives clients the routines and daily habits that facilitate relapse prevention and creating strong relationships in recovery.
