The Basics
Founded in 2008 in Costa Mesa, California, Windward Way is a luxury treatment center that offers men five phases of care for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This includes detox, a 30-day inpatient program, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients also have the option to reside in a highly structured transitional living environment that helps them re-enter back into society.
Accommodations and Food
At Windward Way, the main facility has a 32-bed capacity. Between three and four men share spacious two and three bedroom apartment-style units. The rooms include twin beds, dressers and nightstands with small lamps. Residents are escorted to the grocery store on a weekly basis. Typically, clients pool their money to purchase foods like frozen pizzas, coffee, frozen meals and snacks. Residents prepare meals in fully equipped kitchens that feature dishwashers, double door refrigerators and granite counter tops. Amenities include laundry facilities, outdoor pool with patio table and seating.
Treatment and Staff
At Windward Way, the program length is usually about 90 days. The five-phase program starts with detox, if necessary. Detox usually takes between five to ten days. Medication-assisted treatment is provided. Clients coming off alcohol are usually prescribed Valium or another benzodiazepine for their physical symptoms, while those undergoing opiate withdrawal are prescribed Suboxone.
Upon completion of detox, clients move onto phase two or inpatient care. This phase lasts 30 days. During this time, clients have a rigorous treatment schedule and limited privileges. Staff chaperones clients to meetings, the gym, grocery stores and other excursions. Weekly treatment includes group and individual therapy, attendance at 12-step meetings, medication management (if appropriate) and case management. Individual therapy helps clients process their emotions, work on goals, and heal from co-occurring disorders. Group topics include relapse prevention, trauma and co-occurring disorders. Windward Way utilizes a plethora of evidence-based modalities, including CBT, DBT and EMDR. Experiential modalities including equine and bio-sound therapy are used. Bio-sound is a form of music therapy which includes listening to drumming, chanting or humming.
After inpatient care, clients step down into a transitional living residence for the last 60 days of treatment. The third phase that consists of a 30 hour-a-week Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Clients in this phase are still immersed in therapy during the weekdays, but have more freedom during the evenings and weekends than those in inpatient. The fourth phase is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that includes 15 hours of evening treatment per week. During this phase, clients are encouraged to find jobs or enroll in school.
While clients reside in sober living, there are other requirements besides attending outpatient care. They must continue going to daily 12-step meetings, get sponsors and work their steps. The curfew is midnight from Sundays to Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Windward Way transitional housing conducts regular drug and alcohol screening tests.
There are 29 staff members on board, including CADCs and LCSWs. A team of eight specialists includes a Master’s-level certified sex addiction therapist, a doctor of osteopathy, two Master’s-level licensed MFTs, an equine therapist, yoga and meditation instructor and yoga therapist.
