summitstoneThe Basics

SummitStone Health Partners treats more than 7,000 northern Colorado residents a year for issues ranging from mental health to substance abuse to domestic violence recovery. Its Fort Collins and Loveland locations serve addicts in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. One-third of SummitStone’s clients are adolescent and many clients earn less than $25,000 annually. Providing affordable care to individuals and families without a safety net is central to SummitStone’s mission.

Treatment and Staff

SummitStone begins with an initial assessment, lasting approximately an hour and a half, to determine the best course of treatment for each individual, after which clients are assigned to a clinician. If medication is needed, an appointment with a psychiatrist is also scheduled. Clients with co-occurring disorders are welcome as SummitStone provides dual diagnosis treatment.

Clients are referred to one of SummitStone’s many programs including HUB, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that offers a minimum of nine hours of treatment per week, or the Enhanced Outpatient Program, which offers three to eight hours of treatment per week. Both programs provide group and individual therapy in a relaxed setting. Some 12-step methodology is incorporated into groups and clients are encouraged to pursue 12-step recovery outside of treatment.

SummitStone’s staff includes certified addiction counselors who lead therapy sessions. Clients should expect random drug and alcohol screenings (including Breathalyzers, urinalysis, oral swabs, sweat patch and hair follicle testing), which are regularly conducted.

Extras

Choices Café is a “drop-in center” across the street from the Fort Collins location, run by clients and supported by SummitStone staff that provides a safe haven for clients to go to for peer support as well as community interaction. Choices is not an actual “café,” but more of a hangout, lounge area.

Certified domestic violence counselors provide specific education and therapy on domestic violence issues in a gender-specific group setting. Female-only group meetings are also held on a weekly basis to discuss issues and concerns particular to women. Education and support for pregnant women and mothers is also provided.

In Summary

As far as outpatient programs go, SummitStone is fairly standard in its combination of the 12 steps and talk therapy in group and individual settings. The emphasis on peer support, especially for women, may help clients looking to transition back to regular life with a recovery network. Those who need treatment at an affordable rate will find an accommodating provider in SummitStone.
