The Basics
Founded in in Nashville, Tennessee in 2001 by former pro football player William “Chip” Healy, Chip’s Place is a non-profit sober living community for men situated on five acres of lush greenery and trees, overlooking the Cumberland River. Healy played college football for Vanderbilt University before becoming a linebacker for the St. Louis Cardinals, and after years of struggling with alcoholism, he got sober in 1996. Inspired by his own struggles, he decided to help other men find recovery and rebuild their lives.
Accommodations and Amenities
Once a fishing camp, Chip’s Place is a sober living community composed of six picturesque cottages, and has a 29-bed capacity. Accommodations vary, but typically there are two men in a room. Each cottage has its own kitchen, featuring a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a brick tiled floor and plenty of cabinets. Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation.
Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV and laundry facilities. There are residential house managers on the premises, and Healy is often on the premises, providing support to clients.
Rules and Regulations
Typically, clients have completed 30 days at a residential treatment facility. Clients with less time are accepted on a case-by-case basis. Chip’s Place also receives referrals from several of the area’s drug courts. An eight or nine month minimum length of stay is recommended. Chip’s Place is deeply rooted in the 12-steps, and there are also three weekly meetings held on the premises.
Requirements include attending the three in-house 12-step meetings, going to five weekly outside AA/NA meetings, acquiring and actively working with a sponsor, getting a home group and working the steps. Clients who perform major chores on the premises are paid, and residents are encouraged to find jobs, go to school and participate in activities conducive to a healthy recovery.
The curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays. At Chip’s Place, random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. While residents who relapse must immediately leave the premises, those who want a second chance after they sober up are evaluated individually and sometimes allowed to return conditionally.
Extras
Across the river, is the Tennessee Titans football practice compound. Often during the evenings, when the weather is warm, many clients hang out by the river and meditate. One cottage is known as the exercise house, where men work out. Healy’s standard poodle, Willie, provides canine companionship for the residents.
In Summary
Chip’s Place is a labor of love for Healy, a man who is devoted to helping his clients. This picturesque little community offers newly clean and sober men a chance at rebuilding new and healthy lives, as well as forming tight knit camaraderie, against a gorgeous and serene river backdrop.
