The Basics
Founded in 2012 in San Diego, California, Normal Heights is a sober living apartment complex for men. Its mission is to help clients realize they are not alone in their newfound recovery. Additionally, their tight-knit community forms a setting where men are made to feel as if they are part of a brotherhood.
Accommodations and Amenities
Normal Heights accommodates 25 men who are typically paired in comfortably furnished double occupancy rooms. Singles are also available for an extra hundred dollars per month. A typical double includes ample closet space, twin beds and a flat screen TV.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include parking, cable TV, patio, laundry room, Wi-Fi, Ping-Pong table, a PlayStation, an entertainment area and barbecue grill. Shane Liston, who is in recovery, is the house manager and a certified recovery coach, as well as being a CADC.
Rules and Regulations
Typically, clients have completed a 30-day program at a residential treatment facility. At Normal Heights all the men must maintain an active 12-step program of recovery, being at the weekly house meeting, performing household chores, and maintaining good manners and respectable behavior. Beds must be made daily before residents leave the house. The curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. Clients are required to participate in community service, helping people who are less fortunate. This is done so that residents can learn to be of service, and be contributing members of the community.
Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, and residents who have relapsed must immediately leave the premises. Other behaviors that warrant immediate eviction include sexual misconduct, smoking inside the house, possession of weapons, criminal acts of any kind, threats of violence and having guests over who are under the influence.
Extras
Apollo the house dog lives on-site and provides canine company. Smoking is permitted outside in the backyard only.
Normal Heights is a member of the San Diego Sober Living Coalition, which demands high standards from its affiliates. Liston is on the Board of Directors for the coalition.
In Summary
Normal Heights offers newly clean and sober men a chance to be part of a little community that focuses on maintaining a solid 12-step recovery approach, and makes sure that residents learn about accountability, while they are part of a tight knit fellowship. For men seeking a top notch sober living home in sunny San Diego, Normal Heights San Diego Sober Living sounds like a great fit.
