The Basics
The Mariposa Women’s and Family Center was founded in 1977 to provide services for under-served women and their families who struggle to gain access to mental health care and social services. Over the years, Mariposa expanded their reach, opening two offices providing services for the San Juan Capistrano and Orange communities in California.
Mariposa offers a range of services that extend beyond substance abuse treatment including support for childhood abuse, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, anger management and communication issues. All programs incorporate traditional counseling with credentialed staff. Treatment is strictly outpatient and may be accessed by men and women, families, couples and adolescents.
Treatment and Staff
Individuals seeking substance abuse treatment may schedule an appointment for a bio-psycho-social assessment with an intake counselor. Clients who do not require detox are enrolled in the appropriate program. Programs are gender-specific, allowing clients to better focus and feel comfortable opening up about deeply personal issues. All programs incorporate 12-step principles as well as evidence-based practices. Clients with children can access free childcare so they are able to attend treatment as well as Wrap Around care that provides counseling alongside school tutoring services
The women’s substance abuse track is a 16-week program that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays with both evening and morning hours available to accommodate schedules. Each session lasts three hours and includes group therapy and individual therapy.
The men’s substance abuse program meets once per week on Mondays either in the evening or morning. The adolescent program meets in the late afternoons so that clients may still attend school and not get behind. All counseling is facilitated by CADCs, LMFTs and MSWs.
All programs focus on providing group-centered activities and specialized topics including anger management, relapse prevention, creative expression, parenting groups, financial empowerment, language-specific groups and family groups. Additionally, dual diagnosis support is available for clients who suffer with co-occurring disorders and need extra assistance. The facility does not provide medication management, but referrals are made if the staff believe the client would benefit from it.
Extras
Aftercare groups are available for clients who have completed treatment. For as long as they wish, they may attend group and individual therapy at the facility. Counselors also provide referrals for self-help, peer-support and community 12-step groups.
The facility at one time had a comprehensive family program but it has since been replaced by a single weekly process group.
In Summary
The Mariposa Women’s and Family Center provides a range of outpatient services for women, men and children in need of assistance. The substance abuse programs are 16-week tracks that build an essential foundation for recovery. Treatment is available at two locations for convenience, with all programs available at both locations.
