The Basics
Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. was founded in the 1960’s after Father Edward Hajduk found himself counseling others with substance abuse issues. Beginning with the South Bergen Mental Health Center in 1969 and Hajduk’s work with the Lyndhurst Junior Women’s Club, the original facility expanded and became Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare with three outpatient locations Hackensack, Lyndhurst and River Edge, New Jersey offering substance abuse treatment and counseling. Care for clients with intensive mental health concerns is available in residential facilities in Morris Plains, Emerson, Hackensack, Kearny, Lyndhurst, Rutherford and Fairview.
Treatment and Staff
Potential clients begin the treatment process by scheduling an appointment for a bio-psycho-social assessment to determine the acuity of chemical dependency and the potential presence of other mental health concerns including depression and anxiety. Dual diagnosis support is available as needed. Depending on the outcome of the assessment, clients are placed in one of three levels of treatment. There is an Early Intervention program, Intermediate Care program and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), each with varying required treatment hours each week. CBH utilizes a wellness-oriented model of treatment that provides holistic methods using evidence-based practices.
The Early Intervention track is the least intensive level of treatment available through CBH. Clients see their primary therapist once per week for individual therapy. Clients displaying the need for medication management also work with a Psychiatrist for prescriptions and monitoring. The Intermediate Care track is the next level of treatment and is ideal for more evident cases of chemical dependency. Clients are required to attend one- to eight-hours per week of therapeutic activities using an individualized treatment plan. Clients attend a combination of individual and group therapy with other clients who have the same treatment requirements. Therapists also work with clients to improve their physical health through recommended exercise programs. In addition to the treatment program, clients are also required to attend 12-step meetings to develop a network of support outside of treatment.
The IOP track is the most intensive treatment option requiring clients to attend sessions at the facility three times per week for three hours each day. Through individual, group and family therapy, clients gain a better understanding of themselves and their addiction. Clients with co-occurring disorders receive additional support with medication and specialty groups. Therapists focus on relapse prevention techniques, emotional healing and developing relationships with the family support unit. Healing the physical body is also a crucial component of the IOP track and clients are encouraged to make healthy decisions with diet and exercise. The typical duration of treatment is four to 10 weeks depending on each unique treatment plan.
All treatment at CBH is facilitated by mental health professionals who specialize in substance abuse treatment. Credentials include CADCs, LPCs, CSWs and Psychiatrists. All staff also work with individuals who may be struggling with marital conflicts, eating disorders, phobias, PTSD, sexual orientation and can provide trauma-informed care.
Extras
CBH offers a wide range of behavioral health services beyond substance abuse. Support and advocacy for the homeless, postpartum depression programs, short term counseling programs, couples counseling and parenting classes are all available. Additionally, clients have access to special gender-specific groups for women, those with eating disorders and anger management issues.
In Summary
Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare provides individualized treatment for clients with substance abuse issues using a holistic approach to recovery. With traditional one-on-one and group therapy as well as a focus on physical recovery, clients work on healing their mind, body and spirit. In order to create a solid foundation for lasting recovery, clients are also encouraged to attend off-site 12-step meetings. Those with dual diagnosis work with credentialed staff and are provided medication management as needed.
