The Basics
Since 1976, Harlem East Life Plan (HELP) has provided the residents of upper Manhattan in New York City with mental health, substance abuse and primary health care services. Its substance abuse services include a basic outpatient program and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those battling opioid addiction. HELP’s mission is to help those with addiction issues establish and maintain sobriety through developing the skills, tools and resources to support a healthy lifestyle.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients and clinicians co-create a treatment plan that combines group and individual therapy. The duration of treatment is progress-based, with a maximum participation of up to one year. Clients can step down to attending group therapy less frequently as their treatment progresses. Group therapy uses CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Group and individual therapy is conducted by Master’s-level therapists and CASACs. Additionally, HELP has a fully staffed mental health department and so clients struggling with co-occurring disorders can receive therapy and medication for their mental health diagnoses on-site.
Processing groups include Relapse Prevention, Achieving Abstinence, Phases of Recovery and Learning Sober Behaviors. HELP also has groups dedicated to abstaining from specific substances, including marijuana, cocaine and alcohol. On-site 12-step meetings for those seeking peer support are also available.
The Medication Assistance Program (MAP) provides methadone to opioid users. Clients enrolled in this program must also attend group therapy—the frequency of which is decided with their primary counselor. Groups in this program include gender-specific sessions on relapse prevention and a Spanish-speaking group for Latino clients.
Extras
HELP also offers groups on parenting skills, vocational skills and alternatives to violence.
