The Basics
Hope House is a division of the Catholic Charities Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey. Established in 1971, it serves those struggling with mental health disorders, substance abuse issues and those who are HIV positive. Hope House provides treatment to residents of Morris County, with particular focus on serving under-represented individuals who are “oppressed, powerless, or otherwise disenfranchised.”
Its Dover location provides outpatient substance abuse treatment at varying levels of care and has groups for both adults and adolescents.
Treatment and Staff
After an intake session, clinicians devise a treatment plan with the client that addresses the intensity of care and duration of treatment. Clients attend group and individual therapy for a minimum of three weeks and a maximum of 16 weeks. The lowest level of care, standard outpatient, requires clients to attend group therapy once a week. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) requires clients to attend three-hour group sessions three times a week and one session of individual therapy each week.
The treatment team at Hope House includes Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors such as LCSWs, MSWs, LPCs and CADCs. Groups have a maximum of 15 clients and use Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and Person-Centered Therapy depending on the clinician’s background. While Hope House doesn’t require clients to attend outside peer-support meetings such as AA/NA, however they are strongly encouraged and attendance recommendations are addressed in each treatment plan.
Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive mental health counseling and medication through Hope House’s behavioral health department. Clients with a primary mental health diagnosis and secondary substance abuse issues may be referred to outside mental health facilities.
Extras
Hope House has a bi-lingual treatment team and offers substance abuse services in Spanish. In the coming year it hopes to start a family program to help clients and their loved ones heal the family system from addiction.
