The Basics
For over 35 years, the John L. Norris Addiction Treatment Center has provided a continuum of substance abuse services in Rochester, New York. The facility is named after a doctor who started one of New York’s first treatment programs for the care of alcoholics in 1943. Serving western New York, John L. Norris welcomes residents of Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans and Wyoming Counties. Additionally, specially trained staff is available to treat deaf or hard of hearing clients, as well as those with co-occurring disorders. The center is operated by the state of New York.
Accommodations and Food
The 44-bed center accommodates men and women across several floors of a large, hospital-like building. Seven beds are reserved specifically for deaf/hard of hearing clients only. For these clients, captioned TVs, flashers and TTYs are throughout the campus. Multiple-occupancy dorms are assigned by gender and take into account disabilities and medical needs. Clinical offices and meeting rooms are on the lower level, allowing clients to attend sessions, then retreat to recreation areas upstairs. The large grounds are ideal for walks and meditation sessions—no smoking is allowed anywhere on campus. Staff prepares and serves standard hospital fair in the on-site cafeteria.
Treatment and Staff
To receive treatment at John L. Norris Addiction Treatment Center, clients must prove their need of high-level, inpatient care, as determined by an evaluation. Clients must also be unable to receive outpatient treatment due to physical or mental impairment, unstable living environment or lack of personal responsibility. Clients must also live in one of the five counties the facility serves and be at least 18 years old, though special circumstances may allow admission for those under 18.
Treatment is typically around 30 days and is individualized, with highly structured daily schedules. Daily programming consists of group therapy, 12-step meetings, education lectures about drugs and alcohol and individual therapy. Specialized groups for women, mental health concerns and deaf/hard of hearing clients are available and discuss issues specific to these clients.
Nurses, doctors and psychiatrists supervise all clients and provide support for those with co-occurring disorders, as well as provide detox and medication management if needed.
Extras
Art and recreation therapy is offered, with sessions available for specific tracks. Parenting and life skills classes help clients prepare for independent living, while a social worker provides links to appropriate community resources. All counseling staff is fluent in ASL.
John L. Norris Addiction Treatment Center is able to provide referrals to numerous New York treatment centers, as well as vocational and community resources for clients with additional needs.
In Summary
The John L. Norris Addiction Treatment Center is the only facility in the region that offers a dedicated program for clients that are deaf or hard of hearing. This alone makes it a great option for many, while the highly structured, individualized program is also an affordable choice for those unable to afford private care.
