The Basics
Gale Recovery, Inc. offers outpatient substance abuse treatment services for adults who reside in gender-specific sober living houses in Frederick, Maryland—the Gale House for Women and the Olson House for Men. The first Gale Recovery house opened its doors in 1976 and since then has become a trusted asset in the local recovery community.
Accommodations and Amenities
Gale House offers 12 beds for women, Olson has 21 beds for men and both houses are staffed 24/7. Clients stay two to three per bedroom, each in their own twin beds in big family style houses. Olson house is typically full and has a waitlist of roughly a month. Laundry facilities are located at both houses.
Three healthy meals are supplied each day: A breakfast of cereal, eggs, bacon, orange juice, milk and coffee; a lunch of leftovers from the previous night’s dinner and a nutritious dinner, which is cooked for the clients each night.
Rules and Regulations
Gale Recovery accepts male and female clients, over the age of 18, once they have completed detox and primary treatment elsewhere. Stays at Gale Recovery may last from three to six months. While not exclusively 12-step, participation in AA/NA is encouraged and meetings are available on-site at both houses.
While staying at a Gale Recovery house, clients partake in outpatient treatment three days a week, in three-hour sessions, for a total of nine hours per week. Gale Recovery separates treatment into three phases. In phase one, clients are required to seek employment during the first month of stay, set recovery goals and get familiar with community resources. They are not to leave the premises unaccompanied and must sign in and out. They must attend a weekly house meeting, adhere to a 10 pm curfew and perform household chores.
After 30 days, clients are eligible to proceed with “phase two” of treatment if their counselor and housemates vote for them to do so, based on overall progress and behavior. Curfew moves to 11 pm (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays) and two weekend passes are allowed each month. The 90 day mark signifies the next, AKA the “transition”, phase. It implements a discharge plan with focus on housing, income and community life post-treatment. Transition may extend one’s stay by one to three months, up to a combined total of six. Clients are assigned one of two CADCs on staff at each house as their case manager and meet with them once a week.
Extras
An on-site GED program is also available at both houses.
In Summary
Closing its 40th year of offering services, Gale Recovery, Inc. has perfected its “low-intensity residential services” which is just a combo of outpatient treatment and some living. For those who need some extra support after completing a primary treatment program, this is an excellent choice. As clients are usually referred by another treatment facility, jail or drug counselor, Gale doesn’t charge any private pay but goes through state insurance. Thus, typically, clients pay program fee co-pay, based on a sliding scale.
