Located about 40 miles west of NYC in Bound Brook, New Jersey, Family and Community Services of Somerset County offers outpatient substance abuse treatment. The facility also has a separate wing dedicated to mental health counseling where clients can receive dual diagnosis care. FCSSC offers Level I substance abuse treatment, which means it is a relatively low-intensity program and not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Treatment and Staff

The vast majority of clients attending FCSSC are there as a result of a court mandate as the facility is licensed by the State of New Jersey to meet sentencing requirements. Clients begin with an initial assessment to plan out their programs. The facility does not offer detox services, but referrals will be made if necessary.

After an assessment, clients begin an outpatient program which consists of one therapy session a week. These are usually group therapy, through individual sessions are available when needed. Group sessions at the facility use a range of treatment modalities including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). The sessions are kept small, with no more than four to six clients in attendance at a time. While the facility definitely promotes the 12-step approach to recovery, often inviting local members of AA or NA to speak at group sessions, clients are not required to attend local meetings as a part of treatment.

The staff who lead therapy sessions include LADCs, CDCs and LCSWs. FCSSC does offer dual-diagnosis support—clients are able to meet with a certified counselor who helps them address co-occurring disorders. Those in need of more comprehensive mental health care can enroll in the facility’s mental health program, which allows clients access to medication management through an on-staff nurse practitioner.

Extras

Since the programs offered at FCSSC are certified Level I, it is frequently attended as an aftercare destination for other facilities. Still, after clients complete treatment, which typically lasts 3 to 4 months, they can continue to attend group sessions as necessary.

In addition to its outpatient program, FCSSC also offers a variety of related services including a special DWI class, assessments and referrals for compulsive gambling and spending issues, urinalysis tests and an employee assistance program for local businesses in need.

In Summary

Family and Community Services of Somerset County is a vital community resource. Those who attend can count on an affordable evidence-based outpatient program with 12-step support, dual-diagnosis care and a separate mental health program. In all, Family and Community Services of Somerset County is a helpful resource for those in the area.
