The Basics
Founded in 2005 in Lubbock, Texas by Robin and Erin Casey, Aspire Addiction Recovery Center offers gender-specific sober living and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for men and women. Aspire spans the entire state of Texas. The sober living homes are both located in Lubbock, while the counseling center offering IOP is more than 300 miles east in the Dallas suburb of Frisco. Both locations share a common mission to provide a safe and structured approach to addiction recovery, which guarantees the well being of their clients.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Aspire House for women has a 13-bed capacity, while Choices for Men contains 28 beds. Both are apartment complexes next door to each other. Clients are paired in fully furnished, double-occupancy rooms, which include queen-sized beds topped with comforters, dressers and lamps. When available, private rooms are assigned by seniority.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries. Meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include laundry facilities, covered patios, Cable TV and DVR, all utilities, electronic security gates, parking garages and Wi-Fi. House managers live on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must submit an online application and must provide proof that they have been clean and sober for a minimum of 20 days. A telephone or face-to-face interview may be requested. Clients are accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on their willingness to work on their recovery, and on their ability to be a positive influence within the household. A three to six-month minimum length of stay is required, but some clients stay on for several years.
Requirements include attendance at three weekly 12-step meetings, being at house meetings, performance of household chores, enrollment in school, full time work or participation in community service. During the first 14 days, clients are encouraged to acquire a home group and sponsor. Other weekly requirements include attending a gender-specific group with a licensed counselor, and meeting with a staff member to review personal progress. While not mandated, participation in a local IOP is highly suggested fro sober living clients and referrals can be provided.
At Aspire Sober Living, clients undergo two phases. The duration of each phase varies on a case-by-case basis. During the first stage, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. During the second stage, the curfew is midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Relapsed residents are immediately evicted from the premises.
Other behaviors that warrant immediate drug test and possible dismissal include self-harm, gossip, violence, theft, sexual activity, socialization with active addicts and alcoholics, being at Hookah bars or other places that sell alcohol or drugs, and the exhibition of weird sleep patterns. Clients that sleep all day, and stay up all night are discharged from the premises. Additionally, residents who notice suspicious behavior and fail to report to a house manager are also subject to eviction.
The Aspire IOP in Frisco is ten weeks in length and offers a weekly ten-hour track, which includes group and individual therapy. Groups are scheduled from 6 to 9 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Individual therapy is one hour per week. At Aspire Addiction Recovery Center, evidence-based modalities, including rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) and a 12-step approach are used during treatment.
Robin Casey is the executive director, and he is a Master’s-level chemical dependency counselor as well as an LPC. The rest of the team includes a Master’s-level drug counselor, administrative support, additional LPCs and a sober living director.
Extras
Clients in sober living receive free gym memberships. Male residents participate in educational meetings and discuss topics, which include relapse prevention, self-care, values and personal responsibility, money management and refusal skills.
In Summary
Aspire Addiction Recovery Center is an asset to the state of Texas. It offers a highly structured sober living in one location and counseling in another. While sober living residents work their steps and participate in life affirming activities, they also work on healing from the damaging effects that often result from substance abuse. This sounds like a great place for clients who seeks a comprehensive approach to recovery and may needs a little extra help.
