full lifeThe Basics

Full Life Transitions is a sober living program for clients over 20 years old who have already completed residential treatment for substance abuse. A branch of Full Life Counseling, it is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and offers community-based recovery, recovery coaching, sober fun and case management for adult men and women. Full Life Counseling was founded in 2007 by its clinical director, Ginny Mills, while the sober living opened its doors in 2012. Full Life Transitions offers a minimum six-month program that includes a 12-step component with some on-site meetings.

Accommodations and Amenities

Full Life Transitions consists of one house that sleeps five male clients at a time, as well as two-bedroom apartments for a maximum of six women in the community at The Stratford at Hillcrest. The organization is in the process of opening another residence for those who complete the initial program and are ready to live more independently, but wish to stay connected to the Full Life support staff. The men’s home has three rooms, one of which is private while the other two rooms are shared between two people. The women’s apartment complex offers a community pool and billiard room. Each client is responsible for getting his or her own food and for cooking their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

A day at Full Life begins with morning meditation. Residents are expected to take part in weekly house meetings and community dinners. Individual counseling is offered on a weekly basis and there is an on-site 12-step meeting on Sunday evenings. Clients are expected to attend a total of six AA/NA meetings per week. For off-site meetings, transportation is provided.

Clients must spend a minimum of 15 hours per week working, attending school or volunteering. Individual therapy, relapse prevention and process groups with licensed counselors are provided weekly. Regular monitoring for abstinence occurs two to three times per week through random drug testing.

Clients also receive a discounted YMCA membership. Those between 20 and 28 years old must pay a $1,000 young adult supplement for Full Life’s recreation program. Those over 28 have the option to participate in the recreation program, though they still pay fees per event.

Staff consist of the founder and clinical director, the resident manager and recovery coach, two licensed counselors, an office manager and a part-time PhD therapist.

In Summary

Full Life Transitions is nearing a decade of operation. The fact that it keeps its client roster low is a positive to guarantee individual attention and the fees are toward the lower end of the recovery spectrum. As an added bonus, partial cost may even be submitted to insurance companies for reimbursement from out-of-network benefits (though the young adult supplement is not). Overall, Full Life Transitions is a relatively affordable option in the Winston-Salem area.
