SL CincinnatiThe Basics

Brian Hart, an addict in recovery, founded Sober Living Greater Cincinnati in 2006 when he opened one of his rental properties to financially challenged men who were new to recovery. These men were facing homelessness, and Hart knew from personal experience that their dire situations were possible relapse triggers, so he stepped in and offered them housing at a cost of ten dollars per day. Presently, Sober Living has expanded to include five sober living houses for men, with over a 90-bed capacity. Besides Cincinnati, two of the houses are located several miles across the state line in Covington, Kentucky.

Accommodations and Amenities

Each single-family house has a unique exterior and sports a character of its own. The McMicken Men’s house in Cincinnati has an imposing brick duplex while the Garrard St. Men’s House in Covington is reminiscent of a French country home. Houses are fully furnished, and residents share double-occupancy rooms or reside in rooms that have two bunk beds, accommodating up to four individuals. Amenities include laundry facilities, house phones and Cable TV. The houses are all located near bus lines and complimentary bus tokens, as well as bus passes, are provided, on a case-by-case basis, for those actively searching for work.

Transportation is also offered for the purpose of attending 12-step meetings. Residents purchase their own groceries, and prepare their own meals in fully-equipped kitchens.

Rules and Regulations

Sober Living Greater Cincinnati’s homes have strict rules providing an ambience of healing and recovery. Clients are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, and those who test positive are immediately evicted from the premises. Household chores are assigned and residents must make their beds every day, as well as wash their dirty dishes.

Besides working or having some form of legitimate income, residents must work a 12-step program. Those not employed must pursue volunteer work in the community. Attendance at a minimum of three 12-step meetings a week is required. Residents must have meeting attendance slips signed by the secretary as a measure of compliance.

The curfew during the week, and for guests is 11 pm from Sundays to Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Additionally, residents aren’t allowed to be outside on the premises after 11:30 pm Sundays through Thursday, and after 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

Sober Living Greater Cincinnati provides mental health referrals to outside agencies on a case-by-case basis for those who think they may need dual diagnosis support. Recommendations are also offered for local programs and support for those seeking employment or an academic education, including those who wish to acquire a GED.

Since some of the clients have a hard time initially getting employment, which sometimes happens to newly clean and sober individuals, donations are accepted towards their rent. Sober Living Greater Cincinnati also relies on donations from the community for the purchase of items including bedding, personal hygiene and bus passes.

In Summary

Sober Living Greater Cincinnati offers affordable housing for financially challenged clients new to recovery who really want to stay clean and sober. This is not a good fit for those opposed to the 12 step philosophy, but resources for jobs, school and mental health are provided while the men work on establishing productive lives. For those seeking affordable sober living with peer support, this is a good choice.
