The Basics
Catholic Charities Maine offers counseling, residential rehabilitation and outpatient services to individuals with mental health issues, chemical dependency and/or co-occurring disorders at a very affordable price. Its counseling services are located in Portland while its inpatient facility, St. Francis Recovery Center, and outpatient program are located 40 minutes north in the town of Auburn. The facility is easily accessible via bus from Portland.
Accommodations and Food
St. Francis was converted from a rectory into the dorm-style rehab facility it is today about 40 years ago. An old brick building with a lot of history in rural Maine, eight shared rooms (16 beds) are available for use. Three well-balanced meals per day are served seven days a week but sugar and caffeine are not allowed. Computers and phones are not permitted on-site but there is a television in the common area where movie and sports nights are held. There is no gym in the facility but trips to the local YMCA are organized every week.
Treatment and Staff
St. Francis Recovery Center offers treatment to men 18 and older with substance abuse issues or a dual-diagnosis. Incoming residents must either be sober or have completed a detox program at least three days prior to admission. Detox is not provided on-site at St. Francis. The maximum stay is 45 days. The bulk of treatment consists of group and individual therapy. Despite being started and funded by the Catholic Church of Maine, the approach to treatment is clinical and not religious in nature. Twelve-step recovery is not utilized at this facility. However, clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings in the community for additional support once they have completed treatment.
The staff consists of LADCs and they offer a variety of therapeutic methods including Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. Residents are expected to stick to a strict schedule seven days a week. After treatment, clients maybe step down to outpatient services with LADC counselors in the same building.
Extras
The wide-ranging counseling services for men and women are located in Catholic Charities Maine’s Portland office and provide therapy to individuals and groups, Monday through Thursday 8am to 7pm and Fridays from 8am to 5pm, by appointment only. Walk-in service hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 3pm and Fridays 9am to noon.
In Summary
Catholic Charities Maine and St. Francis Recovery Center have been offering treatment to men and women with substance dependency and mental health issues for 40 years and counting. A deposit is required before admission to the inpatient facility but it does accept all insurances and has sliding scale payment available. For both inpatient and outpatient treatment, clients must bring a photo ID and/or income verification (pay stubs or bank statements) to determine the sliding scale fee for treatment. The outpatient services are also great option for clients that live locally and want to still maintain their work and home schedule while receiving affordable help with sobriety and recovery.
