The Basics
Since 1984, Central States MHC, Inc. has offered outpatient treatment to adults struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders in the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri. The organization provides structured treatment programs at both its facilities located in Blue Springs and Lees Summit. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy sessions with a strong focus on relapse prevention. Treatment is open to everyone, but those who are court-ordered are offered a variety of educational classes who meet state requirements.
Treatment and Staff
The process at CSMHC begins with a substance abuse evaluation led by a clinician. Clients go through drug and alcohol testing during intake to determine whether detox or inpatient care is needed. Whenever necessary, they can be referred to local facilities for more intensive care. If treatment at CSMHC is a good fit, they can then begin the program.
The relapse prevention program is a non-intensive outpatient program for adults in need of chemical dependency support. The program is 16 weeks long and consists of one group therapy session a week for an hour and a half at a time. The Lees Summit facility offers group therapy on Wednesdays starting at 6 pm while the Blue Springs office holds two groups, one on Mondays at 5:30 and the other on Thursdays at 7 pm.
Counselors offer education on the disease of addiction during these sessions and use evidence-based therapy like CBT and DBT. CSMHC is not a 12-step-based program nor do they offer medication management, though referrals can be made for both of these services upon request. In addition to groups, clients are offered individual therapy sessions scheduled as needed. Sessions typically last an hour.
Staff members at CSMHC include LADCs, LCSWs and Master’s-level therapists.
Extras
High-risk offenders have access to a weekend intervention program that applies education and counseling intervention methods over the course of 48 hours. This program is only held at the Blue Springs office. There’s also a four-hour program for minors who have been charged with a Minor in Possession (MIP).
Aside from these services, there are anger management and shoplifting classes for first-time offenders charged with battery or shoplifting. The anger management classes are held at the Lee’s Summit location on alternating Saturdays from 8:30 am to 5 pm with a 30-minute lunch break. The shoplifting class is also available on Sundays from 3 to 7 pm.
In Summary
Central State MHC offers basic outpatient support for adults in need of substance abuse counseling, though it is likely best suited to those seeking less intensive services. Still, the facility is good fit for those with busy schedules or who are looking to step down from another treatment program. In all, Central State MHC is a solid resource for those in the Kansas City area.
