The Basics
Founded in October 2014 by Josh and Maureen White in Sedona, Arizona, Red Mountain Sedona is a comprehensive transitional care program for young adults between the ages of 18 and 30, who have completed primary care at a drug rehab. The mission of Red Mountain is to help young men and women who feel stagnant in their new found recovery, as well as those suffering from mood issues and self-destructive behavior, by guiding them on a new path through a mindfulness-based program.
Accommodations and Food
Red Mountain Sedona accommodates a maximum of 24 clients, who live in gender-specific fully furnished one or two bedroom apartments. Clients are paired in a double-occupancy room, or share a two-bedroom apartment. Accommodations vary, depending on the client’s progress in the program. The apartments include a kitchen, bathroom and a living room. Laundry facilities are available on the premises.
Residents receive grocery money-included in the tuition-and are taken to the store, once a month. Staff provides proper nutritional guidance, so that clients make good decisions on purchasing healthy food. The operations director, a former chef, teaches meal planning. Under supervision, clients cook their own meals. At Red Mountain Sedona, mindfulness is incorporated into the dining experience. Clients are taught to experience awareness and to share their gratitude about having healthy food to eat. Clients, staff and visitors dine together.
During the first part of the program, staff provides around the clock supervision. As clients progress in their treatment, staff checks up on them from time to time, until they learn independent living. During the initial phase, clients receive limited computer access at workstations. After some time, laptops are allowed in apartments. Television use is also curtailed. Cell phones are not allowed between the first three and four weeks of the program. Limited nicotine use is permitted including nicotine patches, nicotine gum and “vapes.” Cigarettes, cigars or tobacco chewing is forbidden.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to admission, clients must have successfully completed at least 28 days of inpatient rehab. While clients receive individualized treatment plans, and the program’s duration depends on their progress, the minimum length of stay is six months. The program has four phases including immersion, transition one, transition two and completion.
During immersion, clients live in a highly structured environment, undergo comprehensive outpatient treatment and follow a daily schedule. The transition phases are between three and four weeks into the program, where clients are encouraged to pursue employment, volunteer, or attend school. Vocational services are provided, and include career counseling, resume building, job interview skills, time management and handling workplace conflict. By the completion phase, clients are working or attending school, living independently and actively pursuing their goals. As clients progress during the program, their treatment protocol changes. Those who don’t want to go to 12-step meetings, bump up their meditation or yoga classes. Others participate in the same schedule while pursuing other ventures.
At Red Mountain Sedona, mindfulness and the 12 steps are the primary modalities utilized during treatment. Weekly treatment includes three group therapy sessions, one individual session, adventure therapy and family therapy. Clients must attend between three and four weekly 12-step meetings. Group and individual therapy are one hour and a half long, while family therapy is a half hour long. Some clients opt for more family therapy, depending on their needs. Mindfulness-based group topics include processing, social skills, peer support, resolving conflicts and interpersonal skills. All groups are gender-specific.
Individual therapy uses traditional psychotherapy. Clinical issues discussed in individual therapy include co-occurring disorders, gambling, pornography, stressors and substance abuse. Clients requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders are referred to the consulting psychiatrist.
The Whites are both Master’s-level psychologists, and have long-term recovery from chemical dependency. Josh White is a sensei, with a third-degree black belt and boasts the title of being the second-ranking worldwide instructor of Ten-Chi Kenpo. Other staff includes a consulting psychiatrist, Master’s-level clinical director, Master’s-level therapist, two therapists, yoga instructor, two lead mentors, one mentor, two case managers, nutritional coach and administrative staff.
Extras
At Red Mountain Sedona, clients participate in holistic treatment including four weekly yoga sessions, daily meditation and martial arts (per client’s needs). The martial arts program includes Tai Chi, Aikido, Qi Gong, and Ten-Chi Kenpo. Adventure therapy is on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and includes rafting, skiing, ropes course, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and golf.
Upon admission, residents are assigned to co-ed “pod” groups, which range between three and four clients. The groups provide practical assistance, offer support and help clients assimilate to the program. Pods meet once a week to check in. Topics include weekly challenges, goals and logistical/practical/emotional issues. Unlike group therapy, which is run by staff, peer leaders run the pod groups.
In Summary
Red Mountain Sedona offers an amazing experience for young adults who have trouble adjusting after they leave rehab. In an age where technology plays such a huge part in day-to-day life, clients experience the intensity of adventure therapy-without cellphones-while attending 12-step meetings, participating in other holistic therapies and learning basic life skills. Another cool thing about Red Mountain Sedona is that clients go through various phases and are allowed to make choices about which protocol works best for them, as opposed to being forced into a curriculum. And they eventually get their cell phones back, too.
