St. Peters missouriThe Basics

Located in St. Peters, Missouri, Alternative Behavioral Care provides a variety of mental health and substance abuse outpatient services for individuals of all ages. Services include detox and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) with weekly group therapy. ABC offers co-ed, gender and age-specific groups. Individual therapy is not available as part of treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at ABC begins with an initial consultation with a Master’s-level therapist. Those in need of detox services are offered medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone for opiate withdrawal. These clients are required to attend group therapy while receiving medication. Psychiatric medication management is also offered as a supplement to group therapy. Clients meet with a psychiatrist the first week of treatment and every other week thereafter.

At ABC, IOP services are divided into four separate tracks. All programs require attendance of three group therapy sessions a week, each three hours long. Treatment typically lasts anywhere from four to six weeks. There is also a mental health IOP for children as young as four years old. A board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist is on staff who leads group sessions that focus on trauma, depression, anxiety and ADHD. Another psychiatrist leads the adolescent program for teens between the ages of 12 and 17. The main difference between these two programs is that substance abuse is integrated as a topic of discussion in the adolescent IOP.

Both programs are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 to 7 pm. All adults seeking treatment at ABC are offered a co-ed program from 12 to 3 pm or 4 to 7 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Topics discussed during group sessions include relapse prevention, co-occurring disorders, the addiction as disease model, coping skills and anger management. There is a gender-specific program for adult women which integrates substance abuse topics with women’s issues. The program is led by a women’s therapist who addresses issues about self-esteem, body image and sexuality. This group is also held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4 pm.

Staff members at ABC include psychiatrists, LPCs, and LCSWs. All therapists use evidence-based treatment techniques including CBT and DBT during therapy sessions.

In Summary

Alternative Behavioral Care is a perfect fit for those seeking outpatient services with a variety of different focuses. Services are catered to suit the needs of individuals of all ages, keeping in mind school and work schedules. Though treatment is fairly basic at ABC, the facility still has all the essentials to lead clients towards sobriety.
