Newgate 180 Review

Located a half-hour drive south of Ottawa, Ontario in the scenic town of Merrickville, Newgate 180 is a non-profit treatment organization. It aims to help men and women struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as surface addictions and co-occurring mental health conditions. Founded in 1974, Newgate 180 promotes a mind-body-spirit approach with individualized curriculums and a continuum of care that includes a one-month residential program and 11 months of continued support. It’s worth mentioning, the 12-step recovery model is an integral component of the programming.

Accommodations and Food

Newgate is located in the scenic town of Merrickville, an ideal place for recovery far removed from the triggers and distractions of regular life. Situated on the banks of the Rideau River, the facility offers upscale gender-specific accommodations and plenty of amenities including an industrial-sized kitchen, laundry room, gym, an art studio and a recreation area.

The men’s facility houses up to 16 residents at a time, with clients sharing bedrooms equipped with full-sized beds, nice furnishings and plenty of natural light. The women’s facility accommodates six clients in semi-private rooms and ensuite bathrooms. Both houses offer spacious floor plans and comfortable living rooms with flatscreen TVs.

While residents are not allowed to smoke in the facility, there are designated areas outdoors. Visitors are welcome on Sunday. While electronics, computers and smartphones are not permitted, residents can use a house phone.

Residents enjoy a healthy homemade menu with vegetarian options as well as alternatives for individuals with dietary restrictions or allergies.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment at Newgate, clients go through a comprehensive intake assessment that includes a phone screening and an in-person evaluation. A team member then determines the best possible individualized treatment plan based off of the client’s mental and psychological needs as well as their history of substance use. In addition, the team speaks with a family member or referring physician. Clients in need of detox are referred to a local detox unit. The residential program lasts 30 days.

Newgate seeks to not only treat symptoms but also the underlying, root causes of conditions. As such, the facility employs an integrative treatment approach that includes counseling, psychoeducation, holistic practices and 12-step. Clients engage in regular one-on-one therapy sessions and daily group sessions. Psychoeducation courses focus on topics such as emotional intelligence, grief, addiction, stress and anger management. The facility also offers mindfulness meditation, yoga, nutrition, art therapy and general wellness. In addition, there is a particular emphasis placed on relapse prevention. Residents learn coping strategies that help them be successful in recovery. Clients also participate regular in 12-step support groups.

The multidisciplinary Newgate 180 team is comprised of nutritionists, therapists, physicians, nurses, addiction counselors, case managers, and yoga instructors. Medication management is available for individuals in need of dual diagnosis support.

Extras

Newgate 180 understands the need for a continued support plan. The facility offers 11 months of services for clients that have completed the residential program. Newgate also specializes in workplace addiction support.
