North Bay Recovery Home Review

Located four hours north of Toronto in the small city of North Bay, Ontario, North Bay Recovery Home is a non-profit residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients over the age of 16 struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. Founded in 1969, the residence promotes an integrative treatment approach that includes counseling, holistic practices, recreation and 12-step. Treatment is available in both English and French.

Accommodations and Food

North Bay provides a safe and supportive home in a quiet neighborhood minutes from the banks of Lake Nipissing. The facility offers spacious living room areas equipped with comfortable furnishings, board games and a flatscreen TV.  There is also a laundry room and an outdoor patio with a barbecue grill and horseshoes.

Bedrooms are gender-specific, with accommodations for up to 27 residents at a time. Residents benefit from both a tight-knit peer community and the privacy needed to focus on recovery. There is a strict curfew of 10 pm on weekdays and 11:30 pm on weekends. Also, North Bay residents are on the “buddy system” for the first two weeks of their stay. Smartphones and computers are not permitted.

Residents enjoy a healthy and tasty menu prepared by an on-site culinary team. There are alternative options available for individuals with dietary restrictions, preferences or allergies.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning the residential program, clients undergo a comprehensive intake assessment that includes a physical and psychological examination as well as a complete account of substance use and a personal history. North Bay seeks to not only treat symptoms but also heal the underlying root causes of conditions. To this end, the team utilizes the intake assessment to design the best possible individualized care strategy tailored to address the unique needs, goals and circumstances of the person.  While the length of care varies from person to person depending on their specific needs, most clients stay for 90 days.

North Bay provides a multifaceted treatment model that includes counseling, 12-step, holistic methods and interventions. Individuals engage in individual and group therapy as well as mindfulness meditation practice. Clients are responsible for attending at least one 12-step meeting a day for 90 days.

The facility also offers psychoeducation classes that cover an array of relevant topics such as nutrition, self-care, empowerment, anger, grief and addiction. Clients learn relapse prevention techniques and coping strategies that help a successful, long-term recovery.

The North Bay team is made up of addiction counsellors and case managers. Dual diagnosis support is offered through specialized tracks however medication management isn’t available. As there is no physician on staff, residents are required to bring a 90 day prescription for necessary medications.

Extras

North Bay Recovery Home also offers sober living housing for individuals in need of continued support.

In Summary

North Bay Recovery Home is a top notch non-profit organization that provides comprehensive residential care for adults with addiction. A credit to the North Bay area, the facility not only treats symptoms but also offers clients a chance at a new life. With personalized care, continued support plans and housing, this is an excellent resource for anyone that needs help.
