McCallum Place Intensive Outpatient Program Review
McCallum Place of Kansas City, Kansas, is a treatment program for adolescents and adults who deal with a variety of eating disorders. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at McCallum Place is a step-down from the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), and includes a number of the same therapeutic approaches and activities within a structured daily schedule. As clients move through this last leg of outpatient care at the facility, they put their life skills in action while still receiving a great deal of support.
Treatment and Staff
As with the other outpatient programs at McCallum Place, the adolescent and adults are situated in different treatment suites in the hospital. Typically, clients begin the IOP five days a week and gradually step down to three days a week. The treatment days can be a bit flexible, as there are programming hours offered Monday through Friday for adults, and six days a week for adolescents.
The adult track begins at 4 pm and concludes between 7 and 7:30 pm. Adolescents have programming between 4 and 7:30 pm daily, with the exception of Saturday, which begins at 10:30 am and ends at 1:30 pm. The IOP is a combination of experiential treatments and therapy. Clients receive cooking classes, have art therapy, participate in process groups, weekend planning groups, and life skills groups. Adolescents also have movement, psychodrama, emotional regulation groups, and Family Systems.
Clients have one supported meal per treatment day. Immediately following the meals there is a process group that is led by an eating disorder therapist. Clients also have free time and community clean up factored into every day’s schedule.
Other elements to the IOP for both age groups includes desensitization to triggers, working on healthy eating and exercise patterns, developing independent life skills, community integration, and daily practice of coping skills.
There are two psychotherapy groups per day, one individual session with the eating disorder counselor, and at least one meeting per week with the staff nutritionist. There are also regular weigh in and vitals taken.
An additional element to this program is that clients go grocery shopping with staff on a weekly basis, practice food preparation in the on-site kitchen, and go out to eat in local restaurants.
Extras
Family therapy and support is offered in this level of care on an as-needed basis.
In Summary
The IOP for adolescents and adults is the last level of care in the comprehensive, phased eating disorder treatment program at McCallum Place. This is the level of care offers clients to demonstrate their newly acquired skills while still getting guidance from staff. This program is flexible and offers a number of supportive services while still allowing for clients to maintain their personal schedules.
