Open Sky Wilderness Therapy Review
Open Sky Wilderness Therapy is a treatment organization that provides a powerful wilderness curriculum for adolescents, and for young adults between the ages of 18 and 30. The clients are usually struggling with myriad issues including low self-esteem, relationship problems and grief, as well as substance use disorders, learning disorders, eating disorders, and surface addictions like gaming and technology. Above all, Open Sky understands the unique hardship that young adults face and offers an empowering curriculum that strengthens resourcefulness and resilience.
Accommodations and Food
This program values accountability and community. As a result, the treatment team fosters a stable support system and an arena that encourages residents to make decisions and help out their peers. They do not pamper clients. Rather, the clients work together on a daily basis to cook, clean, set up camp and perform daily chores.
Depending on the season, the program runs in Colorado or Utah. Residents are immersed in the outdoors, and must learn to live without modern comforts and conveniences. It’s worth mentioning, they do enjoy healthy, organic meals. Also, there are accommodations available for individuals with allergies and restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an extensive intake evaluation that includes medical and psychological exams in addition to a complete account of substance use, personal and family history. Consequently, the Open Sky team designs the most effective individualized treatment strategy. Every individual’s care plan focuses on strengthening their unique gifts. The length of stay varies, however, most clients stay between nine and 12 weeks. Open Sky does not accept clients with a history of violent or sexually aggressive behaviors.
Open Sky utilizes an integrative care model to treat, empower and prepare clients for adulthood. The individualized approach synchronizes a range of therapeutic methods including evidence-based models, experiential therapy, holistic practices and recreation. Clients participate in individual and group sessions with therapists trained in CBT, DBT, family systems, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR to heal the psychological and physical symptoms of trauma. Therapists also utilize traditional talk therapy models and attachment theory to resolve difficult life-long relationships.
Open Sky believes in the connection between personal development and family involvement. As such, it incorporates family into the client’s treatment experience including letter writing, phone calls, a parent’s program, family coaching and transitional preparation.
As one would assume, one of the largest aspects of the curriculum is wilderness training, where clients learn a range of skills that help them both in nature and in regular life. The 12-step recovery model is not an integral aspect of the programming.
It’s worth mentioning, clients with co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression and trauma, have access to a comprehensive dual diagnosis program that includes medication management, medical services, psychological and psychiatric assessments.
Open Sky employs a diverse team of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, EMTs, nurses, therapists, mental health counselors, family specialists and field guides.
Extras
Participants can also expect an array of holistic methods such as art and music therapy, meditation, and yoga.
In Summary
Open Sky does not work with insurances. However, the facility can recommend an insurance advocate. In addition, financial assistance and scholarships are available for clients in need.
Open Sky Wilderness incorporates an integrative therapeutic approach with a robust wilderness curriculum. The immersive adventure not only heals but also transforms individuals heading into adulthood. It’s a world-class organization, and a great choice for anyone seeking a completely unique treatment experience.
