Detroit Behavioral Institute Review
Acadia’s Detroit Behavioral Institute, or DBI, is a residential program for adolescents ages 12 through 19. The programs within the residential environment focus on young people with cognitive disabilities, mental health issues and substance abuse concerns. Treatment consists of therapy, medication management and continued education through the program’s private school known as Capstone Academy.
Accommodations and Food
The residential program has a total of 98 beds divided among two facilities. The main campus house has 74 beds, and the north campus provides 24. The clients sleep in shared bedrooms, though there are some single rooms available. there are several common areas throughout the main campus. This includes a large recreation area, art room and computer labs.
Clients eat their meals in the shared dining room on campus. An on-site kitchen staff prepares all the meals, which are nutritious and balanced.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is based on evidence-based approaches. The clients are divided into specialized groups for specific program goals. Some of the groups are mixed gender while others are gender-specific. The programs are separated according to needs, like treatment for emotional disturbances, those who have experienced trauma, clients who are high risk and those who are cognitively impaired. Though the groups are divided by specialization, the treatment is gender-specific.
On each level of treatment clients can expect CBT, DBT, behavior modification, and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients attend four group sessions per week, at least one individual session, and once per day experiential therapies. This includes art and music therapy, recreation, and expressive therapies. On average this is a six to 12 month program.
A staff psychiatrist or nurse practitioners facilitate medication management. There are also regular skills groups, team building events, problem solving groups and emotional regulation. Clients who are dealing with co-occurring disorders receive specialized treatment focus.
Along with the regular daily therapeutic events, the clients attend classes at Capstone Academy. Curriculum includes project based learning, career development, and STEM related classes.
Staff consists of LPCs, RPNs, LCSWs, psychiatrists, psychologists, and residential techs.
Extras
