Tucson ArizonaThe Basics

Founded in 2007 in Tucson, Arizona by Patrick and Betsy Barrasso, In Balance Transitional Living provides transitional care and safe housing for young men between the ages of 17 ½ and 24. The accompanying In Balance supervised sober living program was established in 2009 and allows clients more freedom and less structure, while they continue to work on their recovery. The organization also operates two other programs, including In Balance Intensive Outpatient and In Balance Ranch Academy, which cater to adolescent males between the ages of 14 and 17.

Accommodations and Amenities

In Balance Transitional Living is a small complex composed of four resident houses, a staff and community house and a gated driveway. The complex accommodates 20 clients who are housed in groups of five per house. Each fully furnished house has a modern-style living room with a fireplace, a dining room with a large table, a fully equipped kitchen and full-sized bathrooms with double sinks. Clients are housed in double or triple occupancy rooms. The complex has a private courtyard with a pond, a small garden, gas fire pit and basketball court.

In Balance Transitional Living works on a three-phase system, with staff providing life skills coaching. Food is provided. During the first phase, clients are taught grocery shopping and money budgeting. During this time, staff cooks for clients. As they progress through the program, residents learn to cook for themselves. Staff is on hand to provide nutritional counseling and meal planning support.

In Balance Transitional Living also operates two sober living homes, which are a step down from the transitional living facility. Each residence has six clients who are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. The 30-day cost for sober living is $1,000.

Use of cell phones, computers and social media is allowed. Requirements include attendance at 90 meetings in 90 days, five-day family visits and a 21-week participation in Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at the In Balance Counseling facility. IOP is included in the cost.

Weekly IOP includes two group sessions and one individual session. The IOP utilizes an evidence-based modality, specifically CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and traditional psychotherapy. Group topics include relapse prevention12-step work, family dynamics and substance abuse education.

During phase two, clients are allowed more freedom. Requirements include attending school or working and maintaining a recovery protocol. Dating, owning a vehicle and other privileges are allowed. Week long home visits are also permitted. During the third phase, clients re-integrate back into society. They’re provided assistance and support in apartment hunting and pursuing academic and career goals.
