Youth Focus Maternity Housing Review

North Carolina’s Youth Focus offers a variety of services for adolescents and young adults dealing with behavioral and mental health issues and substance abuse. One of the specialty services includes the maternity transitional housing program known as My Sisters Susan’s House. It is in Greensboro, and caters to pregnant women and new mothers between the ages of 16 and 21. My Sister Susan’s House offers education, life skills training, and counseling for up to 18 months.

Accommodations and Amenities

The 4500 square foot facility has five private suites for the mothers. Three of the suites accommodate a mother with one infant, and the other two are built for mother, baby and an older child. There is a shared living room, breezeway lounge, laundry room, and dining room.

The home also offers separate private accommodations for the house manager with its own dining room and living room space.

Rules and Regulations

Those who qualify for the maternity program have to apply at the Youth Focus main office. They  must have a clean record and no history of addiction, severe mental health disorders or criminal activity. All the women are responsible for keeping the home clean. That includes their personal space and common areas. On average, the clients remain in the house between a year and 18 months.

There are several options for clients living at the house. The on-site program manager can assist with helping them find a job, enroll in school, complete their GED or take parenting classes. There are also opportunities for vocational training, resume skills building and at the end of their stay, assistance securing permanent housing. Individual counseling is available at the main facility.

Finally, clients learn a series of life skills through courses Youth Focus offers. This includes cooking, budgeting and money management, self cafe and wellness, and maintaining a household.

In Summary

Above all, Sister Susan’s House is a caring program that came together out of the goodness of people in the community’s hearts. It’s worth mentioning, in addition to the brand new, state of the art home, there are also a bevy of resources that can help them improve clients’ lives and the lives of their children substantially. Youth Focus’s programs aim to help as many people in need as possible. The hope is that they will establish new skills that allow them the capacity to take care of themselves no matter what life brings.
