Farnum Center Outpatient Review
Farnum Center in Manchester, New Hampshire is a non-profit treatment organization that specializes in the care of clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as co-occurring mental disorders. Founded in 1981, the CARF-accredited facility provides a curriculum of care that includes residential care, a medical detox, crisis stabilization, PHP, IOP and outpatient services as well as sober living. Farnum specializes in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and medication management. The 12-step recovery model is an integral component of the curriculum.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients go through an extensive intake assessment that includes a physical and mental health exam as well as a complete account of substance use. From there, the Farnum team decides what level of care will be most effective. When necessary, individuals transfer into the detox program. Farnum offers a medical detox process that includes around-the-clock supervision and withdrawal medication. The facility also specializes in MAT for individuals with opioids like oxycontin and fentanyl. In these cases, Farnum utilizes Suboxone and Vivitrol to block the effects of opioids.
When detox is completed, clients enter into either the residential, PHP or IOP programs. The facility offers comprehensive PHP and IOP programming. The PHP runs five days a week for four hours a day. IOP is ideal for clients either transitioning out of residential care back to regular life or for individuals that require consistent therapy but cannot commit to an inpatient program. Therapy takes place three hours a day for three days a week, so clients are able to receive care without taking time away from work or school. While the length of IOP varies from person to person, most clients participate for a month. Upon completion, most individuals step down into the outpatient program.
Farnum Center offers an integrative approach to care that includes a range of medical and therapeutic methods including holistic practices, psychoeducation, relapse prevention and the 12-step recovery model. Clients engage in individual and group therapy. The facility offers psychoeducation courses that focus on relevant issues such as the disease of addiction, side effects and coping strategies. Farnum also provides holistic approaches like mindfulness meditation. Individuals are also involved in 12-step support meetings.
The team includes a clinical psychologist, counselors, addiction specialists, mental health professionals, a psychiatric nurse and physicians. Medication management is available for clients with co-occurring conditions.

Farnum understands the powerful effect that family involvement plays in the success of a sustainable, long-term recovery. As such, the facility offers weekly group sessions for families.
