Solstice East Review

Solstice East is a North Carolina based residential treatment facility for teen girls. This program is for girls 14 to 18 who are struggling with different mental health issues, with a specific emphasis on trauma. The programming uses gender-specific and age appropriate treatments that utilize both holistic and traditional methods. Along with the comprehensive therapy, there is also a fully accredited private school on campus so the clients can continue their studies and work towards graduating on time with their class. In addition to Solstice East, there is a sister program known as Solstice West located in Utah.

Accommodations and Food

Solstice East is a 60 bed facility that sits on 25 acres of land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The residence, which is about 15 minutes outside of Asheville, offers lodge style accommodations to the girls, who sleep in dorm style bedrooms. The residential building is next to a pond and is adjacent to several walking paths that lead to other campus locations, such as the school, gym, pool, horse stall and pastures.

Health and fitness are an essential element to the success of the program at Solstice East. The clients partake in the group meal planning and prep work. The meals are healthy and well balanced. Clients eat together in the shared cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

The program is on a phase system with the clients being placed on teams named after the seasons. The teams basically spend most moments together, whether it be in class, in group therapy, working out or off campus activities.

The phase program is referred to as Hero’s Journey. Throughout the six phases of treatment clients get adjusted to campus life, have written assignments and tasks that are set by the groups primary therapist, and by the end begin the steps to transition back home. In addition the clients family members are given tasks to complete as well, and work closely with staff and their children.

A typical week day consists of early morning wake up, academic classes, group therapy, team groups, specialty groups, recreation, evening study time, and community meetings. There are several experimental groups offered throughout the week. This includes recreational therapy, equine therapy, and several community based volunteer services provided by the clients. Specialty groups are for those who have experienced loss, traumas, have issues with body image, or have substance abuse issues. Those in the substance abuse groups are introduced to the principles of the 12 steps.

Treatment uses medication management if necessary. Common approaches are based on DBT and emotional regulation methods.

The large staff consists of clinical, medical, educational, and residential members. They include psychiatrists, LCSW, and LPC.

Extras

Some outdoor activity offerings include canoeing, hiking, biking, paddle boarding, white water rafting, and camping.

The family program includes educational and counseling elements.

In Summary

Solstice East has some unique approaches to treatment including providing a small, home like atmosphere. There is a strong emphasis on social connection with the girls, and having them set up an environment of positivity within the community. The main idea behind their treatment model is to improve the girls self esteem, communication and their ability to build healthy relationships with others.
