Solstice West Review
Solstice West is an all girls residential program in Layton, Utah. This is the sister program to Solstice East located in North Carolina. The treatment is a combination of evidence-based practices, experiential therapies and holistic approaches. There is also a private school on campus where clients continue their studies while receiving therapy. The focus of this program is to help young women who have experienced trauma, have a primary mental illness, or have addiction issues. Throughout treatment clients receive gender-specific and age appropriate programming that is aimed at healing old wounds and repairing family rifts.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facilities accommodate up to 44 clients who sleep in a log cabin style lodge that is a bed and breakfast. The housing is about 20 minutes outside of Salt Lake City in a private community that offers shopping, restaurants, and outdoor activities. There are several large community spaces throughout the campus, including the private school and subsequent academic buildings, and recreational spaces.
There are three meals a day served to the different teams on campus. The meals are nutritionally sound, and the students take a crack at preparing them with the guidance of staff. There are also healthy snacks readily available.
Treatment and Staff
The program relies on a holistic approach that is individualized. Upon arrival clients are placed onto teams and assigned a primary therapist who also communicates with the family members regularly. The treatment model is known as “Hero’s Journey,” which sets achievable goals throughout different phases of treatment. These phases consists of group and individual therapy, written assignments and community service among other elements.
During the week clients have academic classes for several hours, group therapy, study time, chores, and recreation. Weekends consists of off campus activities or adventure therapy, community service, and optional worship.
There are weekly individual sessions with the primary therapy. Groups cover topics like problem solving, body identity, eating disorders, addiction, managing emotions, health and wellness, and traumas. The treatment is based on DBT and mindfulness methods.
The staff includes psychiatrists, LCSWs, LMFTs, CMHCs, SUDCs, and LPCs. There is also a large staff of educators, recreational therapists, and residential staff. There are psychiatric services available for all clients, and medication management.
Extras
Recreational activities can include skiing, hiking, camping, snowboarding, biking, community events, 5K races, museums, cooking and art classes, and community events. Some holistic approaches include equine therapy and art and music therapy. There are also college prep classes offered along with foundational art classes in painting and drawing.
Family therapy and aftercare planning are available during treatment.
In Summary
Solstice West has created a “therapeutic culture” within their program. This sets up a positive environment for the girls to be encouraging and learn how to make positive changes within a social and supportive atmosphere. Through this, the clients learn self care, boost their self esteem and operate from a place of strength rather than fear.
