PORT Health Adolescent Outpatient Review
North Carolina’s PORT Heath is a comprehensive addiction and mental health program with several locations throughout the state. Treatment is available to adolescents and adults, with outpatient tracks for all ages. The adolescent outpatient programs offer evidence-based protocols and 12-step support, early intervention services and customized treatment plans. During treatment, clients improve their communication and coping skills through a series of therapeutic and educational experiences.
Treatment and Staff
The initial assessment for adolescents takes up to two hours. It requires a parent or guardian in attendance. In fact, it is common for there to be several sessions between the client and family until a complete treatment plan is developed. Throughout this period, staff is coordinating treatment services with additional providers.
The outpatient care for adolescents consists of psychoeducational group therapy and individual therapy utilizing CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) approaches. Along with therapy, clients also learn coping skills, how to identify triggers, and how to improve communication. Clients receive an introduction to the 12 steps, along with additional community support groups and self help resources.
Adolescent outpatient staff includes medical doctors, nurses, LCSWs and LPCs.
Extras
Family therapy is an integral part of the adolescent treatment track. There are individual sessions available for family members in addition to community and group therapy available throughout the program.
Along with the outpatient program, the prevention outreach program is open to individuals, families and at schools.
Project FIND, another prevention initiative, is for family members of adolescents who have the potential of developing an addiction. This program teaches both the student and parents about addiction disorders and recognizing the signs of substance abuse, as well as coping skills, self esteem, and life skills.
In Summary
The adolescent outpatient program at PORT Health uses and educational and evidence-based model to help young clients either get away from drugs, or not get involved with them in the first place. The treatment methods are tried and true, and while the clients are the main focus, there are several options for family members to also receive support. Above all, this is a solid and caring program that professionals who have many years experience working with young clients and their families facilitate.
