Vanderbilt Behavioral Health Adolescent Outpatient Review
Nashville, Tennessee’s Vanderbilt Behavioral Health is a full services mental health treatment facility that provides comprehensive treatment programs for adolescents and adults. The adolescent outpatient division is comprised of a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) that focuses on depression, big life transitions, abuse or trauma, and psychotic disorders. Services include assessment, therapy and medication for both the client and their families.
Treatment and Staff
The PHP is for older adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. This track is five days a week for six hours each day. These treatment days are very structured and individualized. They establish each client’s unique needs during the assessment phase.
During treatment clients attend several group sessions and form peer support groups. Each day begins with a community goals group. This serves as a friendly space for existing clients to greet and acclimate those who are new to the program, share their successes and progress, and discuss their experience thus far in treatment.
Each day in treatment clients cover specific topics that they may face in their everyday lives once they are discharged from the program. They work on understanding and establishing their roles in a social setting, improving their social skills, and being able to compare themselves to peers in a healthy way.
Individual therapy is on a weekly basis. These meetings cover managing emotions and actions that clients experience in the face of a crisis, along with daily coping mechanisms.
Typical therapeutic approaches in this program are evidence-based. Along with the mental health programming, clients may also be offered a series of wellness based services including nutritional education, and stress management methods.
Adolescent behavioral health staff includes Board certified psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff, and social workers.
Extras
Family therapy is an important part of the adolescent outpatient program. This has an educational element that compliments the therapy. These counseling sessions address parents establishing healthy boundaries, learning how to discipline in a specific fashion, basic parenting skills and how to problem solve effectively. Families also learn how to identify any problems or issues with their child, and be more aware of their needs.
In Summary
The adolescent outpatient treatment program through Vanderbilt Behavioral Health strives to create an environment that feels safe and open for their young clientele. The clinical team adamantly stresses the importance of importance of improving communication, and how to have healthier relationships with their families. The PHP is a truly suitable alternative to inpatient care for those who meet the qualifications of this track.
