The Basics

With branches in Wilmington and Leland, North Carolina, A Helping Hand of Wilmington offers outpatient services for substance abuse and mental health issues. Founded in 2007, Helping Hand has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), an outpatient detox for opiates, psychiatric care, and individual and family therapy. Using a variation of the traditional 12 steps, clients gain coping skills in a group setting. In addition, evidence based therapies are used to help challenge the client’s negative behaviors and thought patterns.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Helping Hand is a mixture of 12-step work and evidence based therapy. Following an initial assessment, clients are placed in the program appropriate for their needs. For those addicted to opiates, detox is also available which treats using a monthly injection of Vivitrol or a daily oral Revia pill. The duration of treatment and medication dosage is based on individual need.

IOP meets three times a week for three hours each time, for a total of 36 sessions. Groups focus on addiction education, relapse prevention, problem solving, triggers, anxiety, coping skills and anger management. Clients attend at least one hour-long individual session per week. Both group and individual sessions use CBT and DBT. This program uses a “modernized version” of the 12 steps, with more contemporary language.

Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) groups are arranged for individuals who have completed IOP or need a less intensive program. This group meets once a week for several hours during which clients work on the program’s steps with a workbook to guide their progress. Each step has homework assignments to be completed prior the next group session. Peers vote on participants’ readiness to advance to the next step. The length of time spent in each program depends on the individual.

In addition to structured outpatient, clients have access to individual therapy as its own treatment path. Each session runs for 45 to 60 minutes covering topics like coping skills, communication and relapse prevention strategies. Support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety can also be addressed.

Morning and evening sessions are available at both locations, and the treatment team consists of LADCs and a registered nurse.

Extras

In addition to the above, there are a variety of special groups which meet on a weekly basis. These include sessions which focus on anger management, drama therapy for kids, communication and relationships, stress and coping skills and gender specific mindfulness groups.
