The Basics
Located about 40 miles south of Los Angeles in the Orange County city of Irvine, California, McLean Institute is a residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as individuals in need of dual diagnosis support. McLean does not believe in a “one size fits all” approach and instead offers individualized programming focused on treating the “whole person.” The facility provides a continuum of care that includes detox, residential programming, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and aftercare, as well as outpatient treatment at 14 locations around the country.
Accommodations and Staff
Clients in McLean’s residential program stay at one of six beautiful homes located in Southern California. With space for six residents in each house, clients benefit from a tight-knit community of peers as well as the solitude necessary for beginning recovery. Each home is equipped with luxury amenities including plush furnishings, common areas with TVs, a pool, hot tub and outdoor patios with barbecue grills. While a few private bedrooms are available, clients can for the most part expect double occupancy bedrooms rooms with queen sized beds, nice linens and scenic views.
The residents enjoy top notch meals prepared by an executive on-site chef. Clients with allergies or dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
McLean seeks to treat the root causes of addiction with individualized care. Before beginning treatment at McLean, clients undergo a comprehensive intake assessment that designed to create a personalized treatment plan customized to the unique needs of the individual. The evaluation takes into account the client’s medical history, family background, current physical and mental health, home life and history of alcohol and substance use. If needed, clients transition directly into the supervised detox program to rid the body of toxins. McLean offers a medical detox that includes individual and group therapy, an around-the-clock nursing team and medications to help curb uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. After detox is complete, individuals move into the inpatient program. While the length of treatment varies depending on the needs and circumstances of the person, McLean offers 30, 45, 60 and 90 day options.
McLean employs a multi-faceted approach to care including individual and group therapy rooted in CBT and EMDR, support groups, experiential therapy, psychoeducation, 12-step recovery and holistic models. During the residential phase, clients engage in individual therapy twice a week as well as yoga, meditation, nutrition, art therapy and hummingbird sound healing to promote wellness by liberating the mind from distraction.
The multi-disciplinary team at McLean is comprised of medical doctors, MFTs, LCSWs, nutritionists and case managers, as well as detox managers and a nursing team. There is no physician or psychiatrist on staff, so clients with co-occurring disorders are treated through therapy rather than medication management. Medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders in need of dual diagnosis support.
