The Basics
Soledad House is a system of sober homes that are part of the ABC Sober Living company in San Diego, California. The women’s sober living homes are located on Mount Soledad near La Jolla and offer a safe and clean environment for recovery. Reserved primarily for women who are shifting from Phase I residential treatment at Soledad House to Phase II transitional living, the sober living homes provide all the comforts of home with enough structure to help clients develop autonomy and responsibility.
Utilizing a strategy for recovery that combines 12-step and faith-based principles, women are set up for success by identifying gender-specific addiction related issues. All of the homes are self-governing to empower residents and to provide a sense of involvement in their recovery community.
Accommodations and Amenities
Soledad House offers four sober living homes, each accommodating up to eight women at a time. All of the houses are located on the edge of the La Jolla overlook, affording residents a pleasant upscale residential neighborhood and dramatic coastal views. All homes are four bedroom, two-story single-family homes.
All bedrooms are double occupancy with two full-size beds in spacious living quarters. Each room has a large closet and two dressers and typically offer scenic vistas from private balconies. Three bathrooms are shared among residents, some half-bath with showers only and others with bathtubs. All bathrooms have dual sinks and plenty of storage space for personal belongings. The facility provides all linens and towels.
The kitchens are all fully equipped with modern appliances and have storage space for personal grocery items (clients must provide their own groceries). Cooking supplies, utensils, dishes and cutlery are all available and residents commonly enjoy preparing and sharing communal meals. All clients are responsible for keeping the kitchen and other common areas clean. All homes have on-site laundry facilities.
Each house has a large living room with ample seating on comfortable couches and chairs. A plasma TV and cable are available for use during down-time. A shared computer with internet access and a landline telephone for local and long-distance calls are both available. House meetings are either held in the living room or in the backyard where an outdoor lounge area is set up with chairs and a table.
Rules and Regulations
Soledad House offers structure and a solution-oriented program geared to establishing and maintaining long-term recovery. All potential residents are recommended to have attended primary treatment or a detox prior to enrollment. Most sober living clients have completed Soledad’s residential track and are continuing their treatment. All residents are self-supporting, high functioning and do not use medication for mental stability.
The minimum requirement for a living commitment is 90 days. Residents self-govern and vote on essential house decisions together—including reaching a group consensus before allowing a new member to reside on the premises. The house enforces a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and/or drug use and residents are frequently and randomly tested. If a client is found using alcohol and drugs they are immediately evicted to protect the house and the other members. Staff members offer resources for evicted clients who wish to continue treatment after a relapse—including residential treatment through Soledad.
The house maintains a rigorous schedule of activities ensuring residents remain engaged in activities that enrich their recovery. Clients attend mandatory AA/NA meetings Monday through Saturday mornings at 7 am. Residents must also find a sponsor and work the twelve steps. Sunday mornings at 7 am, clients must attend a morning meditation. Every Tuesday, clients attend a Step Study meeting at 6 pm. A house bonfire—which doubles as the house meeting—is held every Friday night at 7:30 pm. Clients must also attend a weekly church service on Sundays at 8 am.
Residents are required to perform chores contributing to the cleanliness of the house. All chores are performed at 8:30 am daily following breakfast. Clients must spend their days either seeking employment or enroll in school. Clients are encouraged to become self-supporting members of society and productive house members during their stay.
The curfew and more detailed house-rules are decided upon by the group and house leaders. Since the house is self-governing these exact times and restrictions may adjust depending on the current group.
Extras
Clients at the Soledad House sober living remain connected to the main ABC Sober Living residential track clients. ABC recovery community-wide activities and outings are arranged and sober living clients are invited or take advantage of the pool and lounge area on the residential track premises a short walk away. ABC regularly organizes sober activities and outings to the beach, movies and the gym (membership is not included in house fees).
In Summary
The Soledad House sober living community for women is an ideal environment for newly sober individuals to integrate back into the community, gradually developing autonomy and independence. By living in a sober house that offers both freedom and structure simultaneously, clients receive support in finding employment or enrolling in school to further their education. Women live comfortably and with dignity in upscale homes, and develop a sober community to support them in their journey to long-term sobriety.
